BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO
RESOLUTION N0.2008 - ~ ~ ~
Designating the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month
WHEREAS, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, nearly half of all murders committed in Colorado are committed by an intimate
partner. The vast majority of these victims are female; and
WHEREAS in 2007, 49 people in Colorado died as a result of domestic violence. 2 of those
victims were children; and
WHEREAS, a home should be a place of stability, comfort and love. Domestic violence
shatters this important foundation; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence has no place in our society and in Eagle County we must
reaffirm our commitment to bring an end to violence in the home; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence is not confined to any specific group of people, but affects
individuals of all races, socio-economic levels, educational backgrounds, family structures, religions
and ages, and
WHEREAS, we must strive to raise awareness of the consequences of domestic violence on
future generations, as children who witness abuse are more likely to engage in abuse as adults; and
WHEREAS, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2008 provides an opportunity for
us to show our appreciation to the many professional and volunteers in Eagle County who assist
victims of domestic violence by manning a 24 hour crisis hotline, and providing countless hours of
counseling, legal advocacy and prevention services; and
WHEREAS, these services are provided by The Bright Future Foundation of Eagle
County; a valued community resource whose mission is to empower individuals and families to lead
safe, productive lives through advocacy, crisis intervention and mentoring;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Eagle County Board Commissioners does hereby proclaim the
month of October 2008 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month and urges all citizens of Eagle
County to reach out to victims and help end domestic violence.
THAT, the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this resolution is an important
acknowledgement for the health and safety of the traveling public in the County of Eagle, State of
