HomeMy WebLinkAboutR08-120 Designating Domestic Violence Awareness MonthCommissioner ~' L~~ C.~ [~ ~ moved adoption of the following proclamation: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO RESOLUTION N0.2008 - ~ ~ ~ Designating the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month WHEREAS, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime; and WHEREAS, nearly half of all murders committed in Colorado are committed by an intimate partner. The vast majority of these victims are female; and WHEREAS in 2007, 49 people in Colorado died as a result of domestic violence. 2 of those victims were children; and WHEREAS, a home should be a place of stability, comfort and love. Domestic violence shatters this important foundation; and WHEREAS, domestic violence has no place in our society and in Eagle County we must reaffirm our commitment to bring an end to violence in the home; and WHEREAS, domestic violence is not confined to any specific group of people, but affects individuals of all races, socio-economic levels, educational backgrounds, family structures, religions and ages, and WHEREAS, we must strive to raise awareness of the consequences of domestic violence on future generations, as children who witness abuse are more likely to engage in abuse as adults; and WHEREAS, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2008 provides an opportunity for us to show our appreciation to the many professional and volunteers in Eagle County who assist victims of domestic violence by manning a 24 hour crisis hotline, and providing countless hours of counseling, legal advocacy and prevention services; and WHEREAS, these services are provided by The Bright Future Foundation of Eagle County; a valued community resource whose mission is to empower individuals and families to lead safe, productive lives through advocacy, crisis intervention and mentoring; NOW, THEREFORE, the Eagle County Board Commissioners does hereby proclaim the month of October 2008 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month and urges all citizens of Eagle County to reach out to victims and help end domestic violence. THAT, the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this resolution is an important acknowledgement for the health and safety of the traveling public in the County of Eagle, State of Colorado. MOVED, READ AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado, at its regular meeting held the 8th day of April, 2008.
