HomeMy WebLinkAboutR06-105 - October 10, 2006 as Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day Commissioner ~~iL of the following proclamation: moved adoption BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO PROCLAMATION NO. 2006- DESIGNATION OF OCTOBER 10, 2006 AS PUT THE BRAKES ON FATALITIES DAY WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado (hereinafter the "Board") acknowledges improvements to our roadways, our vehicles and basic driver behavior lowers the risk of accidents on our nation's roadways; and WHEREAS, traffic crashes cause more than 42,000 fatalities each year and are the leading cause of death for people ages 6 to 33; and WHEREAS, nearly 300 children under 5 years old that were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 1999 were totally unrestrained; and WHEREAS, alcohol-related crashes account for 38 percent of all traffic fatalities; and WHEREAS, poor road conditions and obsolete designs contribute to more than 15,000 highway deaths annually; and WHEREAS, deaths and lIlJunes on U.S. highways cost society over $150 billion annually; and WHEREAS, safer driving behaviors such as defensive driving techniques, the use of seat belts, not drinking and driving and obeying traffic laws would dramatically reduce the number of traffic-related injuries and deaths; and WHEREAS, the use of cost-effective roadway safety improvements such as all-weather signing and markings, traffic signals, and removal of roadside hazards could also greatly reduce the number of traffic crashes; and WHEREAS, the continued development of safer vehicles and protective traffic safety equipment such as helmets will enhance people's ability to protect themselves and their families from preventable and tragic permanent injuries and deaths. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF THE COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO: THAT, the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that October 10, 2006 shall be designated as "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day" in Eagle County and be acknowledged by the public throughout Eagle County. The Board calls upon the public to familiarize themselves about the causes of transportation fatalities; and THAT, the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this Proclamation is an important acknowledgement for the health and safety of the traveling public in the County of Eagle, State of Colorado. MOVED, READ AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado, at its regular meeting held the 10th day of October, 2006. ATTEST: Teak J.
