BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO
RESOLUTION NO. 2006-
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING PRESERVATION OF ROADLESS AREAS IN THE
WHITE RIVER NATIONAL FOREST
WHEREAS, the Governor of Colorado and the Colorado General Assembly have created
the Roadless Areas Review Task Force to receive public comment and make recommendations
to the Governor regarding the management of roadless areas in Colorado's National Forests; and
WHEREAS, preservation of roadless areas of the national forests protects the natural
environment of the national forests, including protection of wildlife inhabiting the national
forests; and
WHEREAS, the costs of building and properly maintaining roads in national forests
overtaxes the limited financial resources of the Forest Service; and
WHEREAS, much of the roadless area of the White River National Forest is located
within the boundaries of Eagle County; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Eagle County benefit economically, recreationally and
spiritually from the presence of and their proximity to the natural environment of the White
River National Forest;
WHEREAS, the White River National Forest's roadless areas provide important
watershed functions and water flows that protect water supplies for Eagle County homes,
communities, industry, agriculture and native fisheries and recreation located outside the
boundaries of the White River National Forest, and;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY EAGLE COUNTY, COLORADO:
THAT that Eagle County strongly urges the Roadless Areas Review Task Force to
recommend that Governor Bill Owens petition the United States Forest Service to preserve the
White River National Forest's roadless areas to the maximum extent consistent with prevention
and handling of situations such as (a) forest wildfires where necessary for protection of human
life and existing land development and (b) environmental degradation such as insects and disease
afflicting the forests, and that any roads constructed for such purposes or other bona fide forest
management activities be closed and restored to their natural state as soon as practicable after
they no longer are required for such purposes; and
THAT the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this Resolution is necessary
for the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado.
