HomeMy WebLinkAboutR06-059 - supporting preservation of roadless areas in the White River National Forest moved adoption of the following Resolution: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO RESOLUTION NO. 2006- A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING PRESERVATION OF ROADLESS AREAS IN THE WHITE RIVER NATIONAL FOREST WHEREAS, the Governor of Colorado and the Colorado General Assembly have created the Roadless Areas Review Task Force to receive public comment and make recommendations to the Governor regarding the management of roadless areas in Colorado's National Forests; and WHEREAS, preservation of roadless areas of the national forests protects the natural environment of the national forests, including protection of wildlife inhabiting the national forests; and WHEREAS, the costs of building and properly maintaining roads in national forests overtaxes the limited financial resources of the Forest Service; and WHEREAS, much of the roadless area of the White River National Forest is located within the boundaries of Eagle County; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Eagle County benefit economically, recreationally and spiritually from the presence of and their proximity to the natural environment of the White River National Forest; WHEREAS, the White River National Forest's roadless areas provide important watershed functions and water flows that protect water supplies for Eagle County homes, communities, industry, agriculture and native fisheries and recreation located outside the boundaries of the White River National Forest, and; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY EAGLE COUNTY, COLORADO: THAT that Eagle County strongly urges the Roadless Areas Review Task Force to recommend that Governor Bill Owens petition the United States Forest Service to preserve the White River National Forest's roadless areas to the maximum extent consistent with prevention and handling of situations such as (a) forest wildfires where necessary for protection of human life and existing land development and (b) environmental degradation such as insects and disease afflicting the forests, and that any roads constructed for such purposes or other bona fide forest management activities be closed and restored to their natural state as soon as practicable after they no longer are required for such purposes; and THAT the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this Resolution is necessary for the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado.
