HomeMy WebLinkAboutR06-041 - supporting house joint resolution for the colorado forests' health Commissioner ~ moved adoption of the following Resolution: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO RESOLUTION NO. 2006- C)L( ( A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION FOR THE COLORADO FORESTS' HEALTH WHEREAS, a contingent of House and Senate representatives are sponsoring a House Joint Resolution to urge increased and equitable federal funding for forest management, fuels, treatment, and insect and disease response in Colorado; and WHEREAS, the Forestry Advisory Board, through the Division of Forestry, issues the "Report on the Health of Colorado's Forests;" and WHEREAS, said report emphasizes that Eagle County is extremely vulnerable to insect and disease attack and high-severity wildfire; and WHEREAS, in Eagle County alone over 36,000 acres of lodgepole pine have been infested with the Mountain Pine beetle which will lead to an estimated 80-100 million tree deaths or ninety percent of the pine population in Eagle County over the next ten years; and WHEREAS, such devastation will dramatically alter the alpine landscape in Eagle County and lead to castastrophic wildfire danger putting our properties and tourism economy at great peril; and WHEREAS, federal funds for hazardous fuels reduction and insect and disease response on both federal and nonfederallands in the state has declined despite the critical needs to minimize the risks to our local community and properties, increase the rate of recovery of infested forests, and to reduce the increasing fuel load. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF THE COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO: THAT, the Board hereby supports the House Joint Resolution for the Colorado Forests' Health and encourages both state and federal level delegates to recognize the critical need for active forest management in Eagle County and the state of Colorado necessary to protect communities and improve the condition of Colorado's forests. THAT, the Board joins in urging the Colorado Congressional delegation and federal land management agencies to secure increased and equitable federal funding for forest management, fuels treatment, and insect and disease response in Colorado. THAT, the board hereby finds, determines and declares that this Resolution is necessary for the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado, MOVED, READ, AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado, at its regular meeting held the .e:..; day of April, 2006, COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO, By and Through Its ATTEST: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners Commissioner ~ seconded adoption of the foregoing resolution.
