The system was designed under our Job No. 13495W, dated May 24, 2001 and revised September 21, 2001. The system includes the installation of one 2000-gallon, two -compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a pump in a BiotubeTM pump vault and four gravelless chamber -trenches. Each trench has 1 row of 11 chambers for a total infiltrative area of 682 square feet (SF). There is an existing field that has four trenches for a total area of 600 SF. A one -inch PVC manifold was used to distribute effluent to the new and existing fields. A two-inch.PVC pump line was installed to replace a four -inch PVC line and to dose the one -inch manifold. Concrete distribution boxes are used to distribute effluent to the existing and new drain fields. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The pump, alarm, and BiotubeTM vault were in place at the time of our second site visit. The construction foreman may activate pumping system at his discretion_ The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. CHURCH & Associates, Inc. Timothy R. Our understanding from our telephone discussion with Ms. Bobbi-Ann Houtsma on July 23, 2008 is that there is an existing 5-bedroom onsite wastewater system (OWS) on the property. Three -Yuri style tents are proposed to be added. Ms. Houtsma has indicated that the county has asked for an engineer's assessment letter providing an opinion of the system capacity for the additional bedrooms. CHURCH & Associates provided a design upgrade of the original system in a report dated May 24, 2001, and a recommended alternatives letter dated July 9, 2002. The original OWS was upgraded in 2002 to add tankage and drainfield area to accommodate the domestic wastewater flow from a 5- bedroom residence. The existing system now consists of a 2,000-gallon, two -compartment, concrete septic tank with pumped discharge to two drainfields. The initial drainfield contains 600 SF and the drainfield added in 2002 contains 682 SF for a total infiltrative area of 1,282 SF. An infiltrative area of 1,275 SF is required using the regulations current in 2001. The current wastewater generating capacity of the facility is for three bedrooms. The yurts proposed are to be used for a limited period of 6-months of the year. Considering the limited time the yurts will be usable (6-months) and the fact that the OWS is designed using the peak daily flow, rather than the average daily flow, COWC believes that the existing system will be able to support the temporary addition of one additional bedroom, above the design capacity of the system (3-bedrooms + 3-Yurts). This COWC opinion is based on the understanding that the system is and will be used at a level at or below the design capacity, and that the volume of wastewater generated with the three tents will not exceed 900-gallons average per day or 1,350-gallons peak per day. In addition, the opinion is based on the system being maintained properly, with a minimum of an annual system monitoring and maintenance observation being conducted by trained personnel, and that any system materials or equipment noted to be malfunctioning is repaired or replaced as soon as the malfunction is noted. Our original recommendations required the installation of one 1000-gallon tank to be used in conjunction with existing 750-gallon tank. After excavation of existing tank, the 750-gallon septic tank should be replaced. A 2000-gallon two -compartment. precast concrete septic tank to accommodate the required effluent filter at the outlet of the2000-gallon septic tank is capacity is recommended. The inclusion of an recommended. As an alternative to two pumps, a higher head pump maybe placed in proposed 2000-gallon septic tank to eliminate a second pump. Due to the elevation of the existing distribution box and the proposed drain field, two one -inch valves should be installed to achieve even distribution. The two-inch pump line should extend up -gradient of both drain fields. The pump line should be restricted down to a one -inch line, at the high point, and `teed' to two one -inch valves using a level manifold. From this point, the lines may gravity discharge into appropriate distribution boxes, as presented on Figure 1 _ If there are questions or if we can be of further assistance, please call. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural area in Eagle County, where O S are required. The proposed drain field area has a 5% slope to the southwest and a moderate cover of native grasses. There are several structures on the subject property. A two -bedroom caretaker unit is utilizing a 600 square feet (SF) drain field and two 750- gallon septic tanks. The site is served by a well located 110+ feet from the drain field. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The two -bedroom caretaker unit at the location presented on Figure 1, is to be upgraded to three - bedrooms. At the owner's request, we are designing the OWS to accommodate -five bedrooms to allow for future build -out. The OWS was sized based on 5 bedrooms and 750 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Ea e, County Environmental Health Department loading of 150 gallons pew_per bedroom. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.5 is 1125 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage gr- inders. The drain field is to be a minimum of feet to all streams and irrigation ditches. t SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Our office confirmed subsurface conditions by digging one profile pit 8 feet deep. Subsurface materials encountered consisted of 1.5 feet of sandy topsoil, underlain to 8 feet by sand with gravel and cobbles. No ground water or bedrock was encountered. Percolation tests were performed by the county and are included in Appendix A. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 10 to 20 minutes per inch (N PI). DENVER 4501 Wadsworth Boulevard Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 CASTLE ROCK 303.660.4358 303.463.9317 Fax:303.463.9321 EVERGREEN 303.816.1455 LOVELAND 970.663.2124 OWS Upgrade Design Job No. 13495W Page 2 RECOMMENDATIONS used on the published LTAR table, the soils encountered at the subject site have an LTAR of 0.6 gallon/SF/day. Using the peak loading of 1125 gallons per day and an LTAR of 0.6 gallon/SF/day, 1875 square feet (SF) of drain field is required. There is 600 SF of drain field existing, resulting in 1275 SF of drain field required. Using standard Infiltrator chambers and taking a 50% reduction, 638 SF of drain field would be required. We are designing an OWS based on an LTAR of 0.6 gallons/SF/day, which requires 638 SF of drain field with a 50% reduction.1_1 o 16 0( RECOMMENDATIONS The existing system is made up of two 750-gallon tanks and 600 square feet (SF) of drain field at e locations presented in Figure 1. The existing system will be utilized when future build -out occurs. T e installation must include a septic tank and three chamber -type drain field trenches installed at the location presented on Figure 1. The installation must include one 1000-gallon, single -compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet and three chamber -trenches, each with g ow of 14 chambers. The additions of the tank and new field bring the tank capacity to a total of 21W C as and the infiltrative area to a total of 1238 SF. This proposed OWS would accommodate a total of five bedrooms. A flow splitter basin is required to distribute effluent to the trenches. Speed levelers or flow regulators should be provided in the flow splitter basin to allow areas of the drain field to be closed until build -out takes place. The existing plastic distribution box must be removed. Vehicle movement over the drain field trench areas during construction should be kept at a minimum ( to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pic . J shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown of the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of, and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbi- odegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LEVMATIONS An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS VIM bt.W 165 S r OWS Upgrade Design Job No. 13495W Page 3 ,All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system must be licensed in Eagle County and is to have demonstrated knowledge of the county ISDS regulations and requirements.
