Subject: Observation of Profile Pit and Percolation Test, Proposed Addition, 0286
Hooks Lane, Eagle County, Colorado
Dear Rich:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the
profile pit at the subject site on June 17 and 22, 1994 to evaluate the soils exposed for
foundation support and for the leach field expansion. The findings of our work and
recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The work was
done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you,
dated June 14, 1994.
The addition will be 2 stories of wood frame construction. A monolithic slab and
foundation is proposed for building support. Insulation is proposed around the building
perimeter to limit the bearing depth by reducing frost penetration.
At the time of our initial visit to the site, the profile pit in the leach field area had been
dug to about 5 feet below the adjacent ground surface. Percolation tests performed in 2-
foot deep holes previously excavated at the site did not perc and the pit and percolation
holes were deepened into the gravel soils. The pit had been deepened to a total depth of
8 feet when observed on June 22. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation
consisted of 3-1/2 feet of very stiff clay above relatively dense sandy gravel with
cobbles and boulders. The log of the pit is shown in Fig. 2. Results of swell -
consolidation testing performed on a sample of the clay, shown on Fig. 1, indicate
relatively low to moderate compressibility under conditions of loading and wetting. The
laboratory testing is summarized in Table I. No free water was encountered in the
profile pit and the soils were slightly moist to moist.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil designed for an
allowable soil bearing pressure of 2000 psf should be adequate for support of the
proposed addition. Footings should be a1linimum width of 16 inches for continuous
walls and 2 feet for columns. The topsoil, loose and disturbed soils and existing fill
encountered at the foundation bearing level within the excavation should be removed
and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils. A monolithic slab
and foundation can be used. Footings that bear in the upper clay will have some risk of
differential movement if the bearing soils become wetted -Footings, that -bear on the
`` "dense gravel subsoils should have minor settlement risk._ Exterior footings-should?be. _ .
provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for'frost protection.
We understand that insulation is proposed to reduce the frost depth.. - We .recommend. the
minimum depth of footing be 18 inches below exterior grade Continuous foundation

walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming
an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas
should consist of imported base course compacted to at least 95 % of standard Proctor
density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should
be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the
building.
Percolation tests were performed in the gravel soils on June 23, 1994. The percolation
est results are presented in Table II. The test results and subsurface profile indicate '-3
that a conventional infiltration system that is based in the gravelly soils is feasible at the
site.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils
exposed within the profile pit and do not include subsurface exploration in the addition
area. This study is based on the assumption that soils in the addition area are consistent
with those identified at the profile pit. The risk of foundation movement may be greater
than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions.
In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions,
additional exploration would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface
exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter. We should
observe the building foundation excavation at the time of construction.
If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.
Sincerely,
HEPWORTH - PAWLAK

functioning properly with no apparent problems. The individual
sewage disposal system was inspected and approved by Brian Haas
on October 14, 1982, Permit #574.
Water is supplied by a private well.. This water supply was
sampled on November 13, 1985 and sent to the Snowmass Lab. Results
will be available from this office in approximately one week.

Septic permit’s #574-82, #1395-94, #1863-99a
Parcel ID # 2465-113-00-010
Altitude Septic LLC was hired to perform a septic inspection at the above address. The septic
system contains a 1000-gallon, concrete, two compartment septic tank that has 12” of riser on
the inlet and outlet. The inlet line does not have a tee, but the outlet does. The septic tank
needs pumping. In one of the photos, you can see that there are roots coming into the tank
where the top and the body of the tank meet. We ran the sewer camera through the outlet
line to locate the leach field. At approximately 27 feet from the tank, we ran into standing
water and then the camera went black from the sludge in the line. We tried to push farther
but could not, we believed this to be the beginning of the leach field. The leach field area is in
a pasture with lamas and there are no inspection ports that we could find. We took pictures of
an area that appears to be greener than the rest of the pasture.
The permit 1863-99A states that in 1999 another 18 infiltrators were installed in two trenches
in serial distribution for a total of 29. The total square footage for the STA is 899.
You may view the picture of the water in the outlet line here. I have included other pictures,
the county records, and the NAWT inspection form with a site plan, in this email.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!
