Yes I sent the application before receiving Ray's email. I have enclosed an ILC, the septic is south of the house and driveway in the big triangle, specifically, right where the tail of the Y is in the word driveway. When Lonnie Burris from Aspen Earthmoving came up to look at it, he told us to have it pumped the day that he would install the new tank. Therefore it has not been pumped as we are still waiting for the permit. The leach field works well, so it is draining fine right now. The tank lid is at the bottom of the tank. The lid area is made of metal, as is the tank. If, once it is pumped, Lonnie recomends that we replace the whole tank, that is what we will do. BNR Septic in Carbondale will pump the tank out, Copeland in Rifle will have the tank here, Aspen Earth Moving will pull the old tank and put in the new one. Obviously this will only happen if that is Lonnie's recommendation. As I told him, I want to do it right the first time and not have to deal with it again. If that means, replace the lid, great, if that means replace the tank, great. My thought is that, if it is a metal tank, and the lid failed, is it due to rust, if so, could the rest of the tank fail as well? If so, let's replace it now before it does. As you know, we are on the South facing side of the Frying Pan valley, we get good sun (in fact there is no snow around the septic now). Lonnie said that there would be no problem installing it now, compared to in the Spring when the weather is warmer. (I asked him specifically that). You are welcome to come up and take a look at the site if that would help you understand what is going on. To help you out with your records: This property has been subdivided so there are probably different records based on when that was done. I have a road agreement from 1989 and a well agreement from 1978 (when the house was built) This should be the date that you are looking for for the septic if that helps. I think that some of your documents are correct. I have one (cert. ## 575) from Owen Maylin of Glenwood. selling 160 acres here in 1933. That was the beginning of the subdividing. If you need anything else from me, please let me know. I'll just wait to hear from you. I have attached a couple more pages of the file that show the perc rate, the final permit, and a hand drawing of a well. The rest of the paperwork in the file are bits and pieces that don't seem to pertain to the system as much as to the meeting times for inspections. If you want to see those you are more than welcome to come to the office and look over the file. As to the well, I have attached a drawing that shows a well but no information on how far away it is. It should be at least 100 feet as that is in our regulations for distances from a leach field to a well. If the system is designed by an engineer we tend to get distances from the wells but no additional information on them. Wells are permitted through the State. You can access that information through the State of Colorado web site or call them to be routed to the correct location. I would suspect that since the house was built in 1964, we don't have any record of your septic system. If I understand your current situation correctly, a tank lid broke and you'd like to fix it. I'd rather you go ahead and replace the lid to make sure that the contents of the tank are exposed and readily accessible to any people, pets or any other vectors that may spread around any contamination by getting into human waste. If you've have the tank pumped, it is always a good idea to have the cleaner report on the tank's capacity and condition; whether or not the tank has two compartments and access portals; how deep the access is; what material the tank is made of; whether or not any cast iron pipes are noticed; and whether or not any sanitary tees are inside the tank on the inlet and outlet as well as between compartments. Chances are that the tank may need to be replaced at some point, even soon but as I mentioned, I would want to have the licensed contractor that you select determine whether the ground conditions are suitable for proper installation and bedding for a new tank. Due to the potential for freeze/thaw cycles, disturbing soils at this time of year can lead to future problems with unwanted settlement. We'll keep looking for any previous record we may have but I doubt we have one. Hopefully we can talk soon to get more details about your situation and arrive at an appropriate course of action. You may end up fixing the.lid now without a formal permit and obtain a permit in the spring to replace the tank and lines. As Terri mentioned, we would recommend that you consider replacing the drain field as well as the systems installed back then will eventually fail, even though it may have worked fine for the last many years. Thanks. Attached please find OWTS Permit #2-09-2894 allowing the replacement of the existing tank. We were hoping the contractors you mentioned would have renewed their licenses to perform this type of work by now, namely Lonnie Burris, Aspen Earth Moving - to conduct the repair; and B&R Septic - to pump the existing metal tank. Terri will try to contact them and remind them to renew their licenses so this work can be performed soon and so we can issue this permit directly to those who are properly licensed. Just in case, please find attached a 2009 list of installers and cleaners, current as of 2-19-09. We held our annual educational seminar last Friday so the attached list of licensed contractors will grow once we have a chance to update our database. Pitkin County is conducting a similar educational seminar on March 6 and it is possible that Aspen Earth Moving and B&R Septic might be there. The work must be performed by licensed contractors.
