Date: July 23, 2019
The Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) for 208 Tree Farm Dr. was constructed and installed
in July of 2019. Roaring Fork Engineering observed the system during installation. The system appeared
to be constructed in accordance with the engineered design that was approved by the Eagle County
Building Department. Three feet of secondary sand was installed below the chambers as designed due
to the rock content of the existing soil. The pumps, alarms, and flushing assemblies were all tested and
operational. The equipment was provided by Valley Precast; they also performed the startup. Pictures of

1.0 Existing Conditions
1.1 General
The property address is 209 Tree Farm Drive, Basalt, Colorado. The proposed development is located
north of Highway 82 and east of El Jebel Road and the Shadowrock development. The property is
accessed off of Tree Farm Drive which connects to Highway 82. The legal description of the property is
Section 2, Township 8S, Range 87W of the 6th Principal Meridian at a location 200 feet from the north
section line and 825 feet from the west section line in Eagle County, Colorado. The parcel is a total of 1.5
acres. The development is currently proposing one premanufactured home, a gravel access with parking,
and an onsite well.
Figure 1 – Vicinity Map
1.2 Soil Conditions
A Geotechnical report was produced in 2006 by HP Geotech for most of the parcel at 19351 State
Highway 82. The report is included in the Appendix. The subject property is located near soil boring/pit
number nine.
Two soil profile pits were excavated to approximately nine feet in the vicinity of the proposed septic field
on September 21, 2018 and observed by Roaring Fork Engineering (RFE). Pictures are provided in the
Appendix. The pits included approximately 12 to 18 inches of organics/topsoil overlaying seven to eight
feet of native material. Visual tactile observations were performed on the soil below the organic material.
They indicated both soil profile pits contained more than 35 percent rock larger than two millimeters.
4
Soil samples of the native material were taken from both soil profile pits, so gradation testing could be
performed. The results verified the tactile field observation and resulted in more than 35 percent of each
soil sample being retained on or above the No. 10 sieve. The soil passing the No. 10 sieve was tested
according to the USDA NRCS Guide to Texture by Feel. The results showed the soil was a Loamy Sand
(Type 1) since it remained in a ball when squeezed and the soil did not form a ribbon.
Due to the percentage of rock in the soil profile pits being greater than 35 percent the soil is considered to
have “High Rock Content” or Type “R” soils requiring a minimum three feet deep unlined sand filter for
treatment. It is anticipated that secondary sand will be used with an LTAR of 0.8 according to Table 10-
1A of the Eagle County OWTS Regulations.
No groundwater was observed within the soil profile pits.
2.0 OWTS Overview
The septic system will be designed in accordance with the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment’s (CDPHE) Regulation 43 and Eagle County regulations. A Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment (CDPHE) permit is not required for this size of system.
The waste water design flows were calculated using section 43.6 of the Eagle County On-site Wastewater
Treatment System Regulations. The design flow used per person is 75 gallons per day. The assumed
number of persons per bedroom is two for design purposes. These daily flows were used along with
Section 43.7 to determine the minimum distances between components of the OWTS and the existing
well.
Septic tanks will be used to bring the effluent to Treatment Level 1 (TL1). The minimum septic tank size
will be 1,000 gallons as required in Section 43.9-B2-of the Eagle County OWTS Regulations.
The required soil treatment area (STA) was determined by section 43.10 of the Eagle County On-site
Wastewater Treatment System Regulations.
The dosing volume for each field is based on the industry standard dosing volume of seven times the
piping volume of the STA receiving the effluent.
The Orenco pump selection software was used to calculate the total dynamic head loss within the system.
This information was then used to specify an adequate pump.
2.1 Design Flow
The septic field will treat wastewater from a two bedroom pre-manufactured home. Eagle county
regulations require the design flow to include two people per bedroom with each person generating 75
gallons per day.
- 2 bedrooms x 2 people x 75 gallons per day = 300 gallons per day
2.2 Septic Tank Sizing
For 2 bedrooms, the minimum tank size according to the regulations is 1,000 gallons. The tank will have
two chambers and the first chamber will hold more than half of the required effective volume. The
5
incoming wastewater design flow is 300 gallons per day and the dosing volume is approximately 100
gallons. Therefore, the tank provides approximately 72 hours of detention not including the dosing
volume.
This septic tank will bring the effluent to Treatment Level 1 (TL1) before it is pumped to the soil
treatment area.
2.3 Soil Treatment Area Sizing
Due to the high rock content (35 percent greater than 2 mm) observed in the soil profile pits a minimum
three foot deep unlined sand filter is required per Table 10-1A of the Eagle County OWTS regulations.
Secondary sand media is proposed so an LTAR of 0.8 was used in the design. The rock content was
determined using a visual tactile test, which was verified testing soil samples from each test pit.
Using the design flow of 300 gallons per day and the LTAR of 0.8 gallons per day per square foot, it was
determined that the minimum STA is 375 square feet for a bed configuration. 32 Quick 4 Plus Standard
infiltrators each containing 12 square feet of effective treatment area are proposed for a total of 384
square feet of soil treatment area. They will be configured in a bed formation of four rows of eight
infiltrators. This does not exceed the maximum width of 12 feet for a bed configuration.
No sizing adjustment factors/reductions have been applied to the soil treatment area per Table 10-1A.
2.4 Setbacks
According to Table 7-1 of the Eagle County OWTS Regulations the soil treatment area must be a
minimum of 100 feet away from the onsite well and the septic tank must be 50 feet away from the onsite
well. Both conditions are met with the proposed design as shown on the plans.
2.5 Distribution and Dosing
The soil treatment area will be pressure dosed as required in Table 10-1A. The second chamber of the
second 1,000-gallon tank will house the Orenco pump and float tree. The pump will discharge into a
pressurized 1.5 inch PVC distribution pipe before splitting flow into the 1.5 inch PVC manifolds and
laterals. The laterals run the entire length of the chambers and are also 1.5 inch PVC pipe that are
suspended from the top of the chambers. The laterals shall have one eighth of an inch orifices spaced
every four feet.
The distribution pipe is sloped back toward the tank so the effluent will drain back into the pump basin
when the pump shuts off. This is done to prevent freezing and stagnant fluid sitting in the line.
A dosing volume was determined by using the industry standard of seven times the lateral piping volumes
plus any drain back for a total of 98 gallons per dose. The elevations of the floats in the dosing chamber
have been set to meet this dosing volume. See the appendix for dosing calculations and OWTS drawings.
2.6 Head Loss
The Orenco pump selection software was used to determine the total head loss for the system. Using the
distribution pipe material, size and length, orifice size and spacing, bends, the max elevation lift, the
manifold and the lateral piping configurations, a system curve was created. From this, the minimum
pumping requirements were determined. A system curve is provided in the appendix.
6
2.7 Pump Selection
The pump selected for the system is the Orenco PF5005 high head effluent pump. A pump curve, along
with product information, can be found within the appendix.
3.0 Maintenance
The Owner will follow the operation and maintenance required in Section 43.14 of the Eagle County On-
site Wastewater Treatment System Regulations. Below is a maintenance schedule for the OWTS.

Except for Soil Type 0, the LTAR may vary, depending on the Soil Type and the Treatment Level of the effluent.
You may adjust the LTAR for Soil Types 1‐5 by choosing different Treatment Levels, but for Soil Type "0" the LTAR
will always be "1" regardless of Treatment Level. Remember that HLT systems are always pressure‐dosed, so no
additional sizing reductions are given for Manufactured or Chamber distribution media for HLT systems.
DISCLAIMER: the OWTS Regulations may limit sizing options based on types of systems, effluent application
methods, treatment levels, etc. Not all of the sizing options shown in the calculated tables will apply
to every system. These calculations must be verified by the design engineer.
