KOECHLEIN CONSULTING ENGINEERS, INC. Consulting Geotecknical Engineers were measured at constant time intervals and percolation rates were calculated for each interval. Percolation test results are presented in Appendix A, Percolation Test Results. The last column of the table provides the water percolation rate for each time interval. The percolation rate varied from 13 to 40 minutes per inch. We recommend designing the leach field for at lea Ct40 minutes pe— r i h EXCAVATIONS We anticipate that excavations of 6 to 8 feet may be required for construction of the basement. Because weathered to hard siltstone bedrock was encountered in the exploratory test pits, we believe that heavy duty construction equipment may be necessary to complete the required excavations. Areas of very hard siltstone bedrock may be encountered during excavating. These areas may require blasting to complete the excavations. Care needs to be exercised during construction so that the excavation slopes remain stable. The near surface soil, which consisted of sandy, gravelly silt, classifies as Type B soils in accordance with OSHA regulations. The siltstone bedrock classifies as Type A soil in accordance with OSHA regulations. OSHA. regulations should be followed in all excavations and cuts. Approximately 1.0 foot of topsoil was found in the test pits. - All topsoil beneath 6 KOECHLEIN CONSULTING ENGINEERS, INC Consulting Geotechnical Engineers In recent years, radon gas has become a concern. Radon gas is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced by the decay of minerals in soil and rock. The potential for radon gas in the subsurface strata of mountain terrain is likely. Since excavations for lower levels in the residence are anticipated, we suggest that the building be designed With ventilation for below grade areas. PERCOLATION TEST A percolation profile hole (PH-1) was excavated on April 14, 1998 at the location shown in Fig. 2, Locations of Exploratory Test Pits and Percolation Holes. The soils encountered in the profile hole consisted of 1.5 feet of topsoil underlain by a moist, medium dense, red, brown, sandy, gravelly silt to a depth of 8.0 feet. Siltstone bedrock -o was encountered at the maximum depth explored of 8.0 feet. No free ground water was encountered in the profile hole. The percolation tests were performed on April 16, 1998, in the vicinity of the proposed leach field. Three percolation test holes, approximately 6 to 10 inches in diameter, were excavated to depths ranging from 29 to 32 inches. The .approximate locations of the percolation test holes are shown in Fig. 2, Locations of Exploratory Test Pits and Percolation Holes. The holes were filled with water and the subsurface soils were allowed to saturate for at least 8 hours prior to starting the tests.
