Dear Mr. Wells,
We have observed the installation of the new drain trenches during
construction of the repair onsite wastewater system (OWS). The in-
stallation was in accordance with our design dated May 11, 1997 and
the Eagle County ISDS Permit 1679-97. We were called and asked to
confirm the field, trenches, size for four bedrooms, as the septic
tank would allow four bedrooms:
Per our design, which stated if additional bedrooms were desired, an
additional 15 chambers should be installed, the system was expanded.
The installation was done for a four bedroom residence with 70 cham-
bers. The existing septic tank was appropriate for four bedrooms.
The chamber trenches were installed as indicated on the attached
Figure 1. A diverter valve was installed and a 6 inch PVC pipe was
installed to protect the effluent service line where it went beneath
the driveway. A six lines outlet distribution box was installed for
the eight trenches as indicated on Figure 1. The upper and lowest
trenches are short trenches connected by serial distribution to the
2nd and 7th trenches.
If there are any questions,
call.

Subject: Subsurface Evaluation & Repair OWS Design
Lot 14, Aspen Mountain View, Filing 2

Job No. 8499
Dear Mr. Wells,
As requested, we have observed subsurface conditions in a test pit,
reviewed the soils data from the original Onsite Wastewater System
(OWS) and prepared a repair Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) design for
the subject site. The purpose of our project was to design a repair
OWS for the property.
SITE CONDITIONS - The investigated site is an approximate 2.7 acre lot
as indicated on Fig. 1. The site is located in a rural mountain area
where onsito wastewater systems (OWS) are required. Water is prcvided
by a public water district. The location of the existing septic tar_k
and drain field is indicated on Fig. 1.
EXISTING CONSTRUCTION - A 3 bedroom residence exists as indicated on
Fig. 1. The se oad for a three bedroom dwelling is 450 gallons j)e_,
per day (GPD), 675 GP with peaking factor. A garbage grinder and
clothes washer are inc u e in e esign calculations.
The existing OWS was installed in 1992 based on a design by ENARTECH,
Inc. using perc tests by Eagle County. We understand a 1250-gallon
septic tank and 22 chambers were installed as indicated on Fig. 1.
Although not known, we understand the 22 chambers were installed in a
bed configuration. We estimate the bed is 4 chambers wide.
The repair trenches are proposed in the southwest portion of the lot.
The ground surface slopes_gently to moderately to the south. The
slope in the drain field area is 16% to the south. The surface vege-
tation consists of a sparse cover of native grasses and scrub oak.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - Subsurface conditions was exposed in a backhoe
test pit in the proposed trench area. Soils consisted of a thin top-
soil layer underlain to 2.5 feet of clay topsoil underlain by stiff
si s i sandy clay underlain by sandy clay -with boulders to
thef the it Or p co a ion es s were
performed in lieu of soil classi ica ion and designation of a long
term acceptance rate. No ground water was observed in the test pit.
RECOMMENDATIONS - The results of our investigation indicates an OWS
can be installed at the location presented on Fig. 2. The OWS design
is based on an avera wage load of 450 GPD, and a long term accep-
tance rate (LTAR) of .4 gal ons/square foot/day (G/SF/D). A existing rV

separation between trenches, which would b 5 chambers at 15.5 SF per
chamber and a. 50!s reduction in field area w installation a trench-
es. we recommend the trenches be connected far both parallel and
serial distribution as indicated on Fig. 2. The chamber trenches
should be connected re
of th of the trenches,
as well.as having distributox with "levelors" o allow control
of effluent distribu _. en a is oc upie full time, so we
do not recommend serial distribution be the only distribution method.
Chambers must be installed so the outlet serial pipes are set on un-
disturbed ground so effluent will not flow along the trench excava-
tion. We recommend the existing bed be connected to the system and
used after the field is allowed to dry for a minimum of I year. with
the 4'trenches and 1 bed, we believe 1 section of the system can be
closed and allowed to rest annually by adjusting the levelors.
Because of boulders which occur in the subsoil, some leveling of the
trench excavations may be required. Where a boulder occurs in the
chamber footprint and is7 removed, we recommend filling the resu?ting
hole with 3.4 inch gravel.
if additional bedrooms are anticipated, we recommend installing .a
larger septic rank and field. The tank size should be increase by 250
gallor: per anticipated bedroom for each bedrooms over 4 bedroom. Ad-
diticral bedrooms will `-equ're an additional. 232 SF of chamber trench,
or 15 chambers per bedroom.
OPERATION AND. MAINTENANCE - The owner must real,ze an 0W4 is different
from a public sewer system. The owner must be aware of and assure
Responsibility for maintenance of the system. We recommend the septic:
tank be pumped at least every 2 years. There are daily considerations
such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into
the OWS, Water use must be carefully monitored so toilets are not
allowed to run when seals malfunction. To. illustrate the point, it
should be noted a running toilet will consume in excess of 1,000 GPD
if allowed to run. As the system is designed for 450 GPD, a 1000
gallon loading will flood and harm the system.
LIMITATIONS - our evaluation, layout, design and recommendations are
based on data submitted. if subsurface conditions different from those
described in this report are encountered, we should be called to ob-
serve the subsurface conditions. If proposed construction is changed,
we should be notified to evaluate the effect of the changes on the
proposed ows.
If there are a, if we can be of further service, please
call."R.

The field percolation tests were performed by Roger Boyd, Eagle County
