Mr. David Thorpe P.O. Box 7 Vail, CO 81658 Prepared by: Alpine Engineering, Inc. P.O. Box 97 Edwards, CO 81632 (970) 926-3373 INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM APPLICATION INTRODUCTION Vail Associates, Inc. is proposing to build a lift maintenance building on Vail Mountain near the Two Elk Restaurant and the top of Chair 14, located at approximately Latitude 39' 36' 00", Longitude 106' 20' 15". The site is not currently served by Upper Eagle Valley Consolidated Sanitation District; an Individual Sewage Disposal System is proposed. PROPOSED USE The proposed system will serve an employee restroom consisting of a toilet and handsink. This facility will not be available for public use. Facilities will serve a maximum of 7 seasonal employees. There is no water service to this location; treated tap water will be hauled to the site bi-monthly to fill a 1,000 gallon holding tank. The holding tank will be drained if it is not anticipated to be used for more than three weeks. QUANTITY OF SEWAGE (7 employees)(15 gallons/day/employee)(1.5 peaking factor) = 160 gallons per day Qv - SEPTIC TANK SIZE 160 gpd x 30 hrs/day = 200 gallons 24 hrs/day Round up to ,000 gal3 capacity tank with baffle. SOILS INVESTIGATION On July 8, 1996, three percolation tests were performed at the proposed absorption trench location. Three pits were hand -dug to a depth of two to two -and -a -half feet, encountering a red sandy- le Neither groundwater nor evidence of a seasonal high water table was encountered in the holes. The average percolation rate wa 10 'nutes per inch (MPI). All three tests indicated sufficient percolation rates. In addition, a soil profile pit was dug by backhoe to a depth of 5.5 feet where practical refusal was met. Soils encountered were: 2.6 feet of a red sandy silt with grav_el.to cobble s1Zed_ roe,k--fragmentsrfollowed by fractured bedroc Neither groundwater nor indication of a -___._ seasonal high water table was encountered. Application for ISDS Permit 1 VAI Lift Maintenance Building SYSTEM DESIGN Due to shallow bedrock at the site, a mound system is proposed to provide a four foot separation between the floor of the infiltrators and bedrock. On -site soils will be used to build up the surface to four feet above bedrock. The existing native surface should be scarified to a depth of 3 inches. Fill will be added in 0.5 to 1.0 foot lifts and compacted to approximate natural soil compaction. The top 3 inches of fill shall be scarified prior to the addition of each subsequent lift. The final surface will be scarified to a depth of 3 inches following leveling and compaction. Infiltrator units will be placed level on this surface and on -site soils will be used to cover units to a depth of 1.0 to 1.5 feet. The surface of the mound will be seeded to provide grass cover. The percolation rate of the mound (fill) material will be assumed to be the long-term acceptance rate of the soil per the EPA Design Manual: Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems. The long-term acceptance rate for the soils found on site is 0.8 gallons per day per square foot. TRENCH DESIGN A = Q/5 (T)0.s A = (160 gpd/5) (10 mpi)o.s A 102 SF- Check with loading rate: For the type of soils found on site, the EPA Design Manual: Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems recommends a maximum application rate of 0.8 gallons per square foot per day. 160 gpd 0.8 gal/ft' This area will be used for design purposes.
