RE: Daniels Property — ISDS
Dear Ms. Trujillo:
As a follow up to our conversation on July 18, 1996, this letter clarifies the proposed
improvements and provides additional information on setbacks from the leachfield to the
Stremme Gates Ditch, Eagle River, "filtration pond," and potable water line.
The proposed construction includes 48 infiltrators as described in the text of our July 10, 1996
letter report. The note on Figure 3 (attached) has been revised for 48 units. The proposed
construction would serve all of Phase I and Phase II.
The setbacks from the leachfield to various water structures is given below.
Proposed
Regulatory
Setback
Setback
• Eagle River
350 feet
170 feet *
• Stremme Gates Ditch
125 feet
170 feet *
• "Filtering Pond"
50 feet
None
• Potable Water Line
45 + feet
25 feet
* Includes additional 8 feet/100 gallons over 1,000 gallons per day.
Although the Stremme Gates Ditch is closer than the recommended setback, it is the opinion of
Wright Water Engineers (WWE) that the Daniels ISDS will not adversely impact the water
quality of the ditch. As shown in the attached sketch labeled Figure 5, the ditch elevation is
such that the percolating effluent would not be intercepted.

The "filtering pond" label on the base map is actually a dry stormwater infiltration pond which
includes a filter media of sand and filter fabric for "treatment" of the stormwater. It is our
understanding that there is no setback requirement for this structure.
By reference herein to WWE's July 10, 1996 letter report, this letter and attachments, along
with the report, represent our design for the system.

Dear Ms. Trujillo:
At the request of George H. "Jody" Daniels, we have relocated the proposed absorption trenches
rather than lining the ditch to address the County's concern regarding setback from the Stremme
Gates Ditch. The proposed location shown on the attached revised Figure 3 is at least 170 feet
from the Stremme Gates Ditch..

RE: ISDS for Car Wash/Office/Warehouse Facilities
Dear Jody:
At your request, Wright Water Engineers (WWE) developed a design for an ISDS system to
serve the proposed car wash, office space, and warehouse space on your property near the Eagle
County Airport. This letter report presents the wastewater demands, percolation tests, and
system components.
PROJECT
Based on the plans provided to us prepared by Rich Architectural Designs, Inc. dated
February 5, 1996, the proposed project to be served includes a car wash, approximately 3,060
square feet of office space, 5,000 square feet of warehouse, and a future recycled water car
wash to replace the existing car wash. The project is proposed in three phases.
12_ e
• Phase I - Car wash, 1,140 square feet office, and 1,000 square feet warehouse.
• Phase II - 4,000 square feet warehouse and recycled water car wash. I L. Zoo)
• Phase III - .1,920 square feet office.
The project location is shown on Figure 1.
WASTEWATER FLOWS
The wastewater demands are based on typical values for office space found in Wastewater
Engineering by Metcalf and Eddy. The conservative estimate of 25 gallons per day per
employee was used. Based on Uniform Building Code regulations, the number of employees
was estimated at 1 per 100 square feet for office space and 1 per 500 square feet for warehouse
space.
DENVER (303) 480-1700 DURANGO (970) 259-741 1 BOULDER - (303) 473-9500
George H. "Jody" Daniels, III
July 10, 1996
Page 2
Water requirements for the car wash are estimated at 12 gallons per car based on data you
provided. You have indicated that the average use is 50 cars per day during the peak seasons.
Based on the above criteria, the average daily flow is`'eptimated a 1,650 . allons per day (gpd)
ncluding 975 gpd for Phase I, 200 _ r Phase Ii1 wand 475 gpd for Phase II1dVThe design
flow is 1.5 times the average flow or 2,500 allons per day. The flow estimates for each phase 0
are given in Table 1.
SEPTIC TANK
Based on the crite Vig
of 30 hours detention time for the design flow the minimum septic tanke'
volume required i 3,125 gallons including 1,850 gallons for Phas , 375 gallons for Phase IId',"`ti'
Yand 900 gallons for Phase III. It is proposed to initially install two 1,250-gallon tanks which
would be adequate for Phase I and Phase II. An additional 625 gallons would be required for ,n_:.t
--
Phase III..:.
The car wash wastewater will require a 300 gallon minimum oil and grease separator/sediment
F'
basin prior to discharge to the septic tank. The office/warehouse wastewater will be from4
restrooms and drinking fountains and will not require any pre-treatment.
PERCOLATION RATE AND SOILS
3
WWE conducted percolation tests and observed a soil profile hole on May 30, 1996. The
percolation test indicates an average rate of 18 minutes per inch. This percolation rate is within
the range for a conventional absorption system. The percolation test data sheets and location
map (Figure 2) are attached.
The soil profile includes topsoil in the first 18 inches, clayey sand to 4 feet, and sandy gravel
below 4 feet.
ABSORPTION TRENCH
Based on the design flow and percolation rate, the minimum required absorption area is 2,100
square feet. It is proposed to use a graveless trench with an infiltrator type unit. The trenches
would be a maximum of 100 feet and spaced a minimum of 6 feet apart. The trenches are
proposed to have a serial distribution pattern. The infiltrators will be approximately three feet
deep.
George H. "Jody" Daniels, III
July 10, 1996
Page 3
Allowing for a 50 percent reduction using a graveless trench infiltrator system, the minimum
required area is 1,050 square feet. This would require 68 standard sized infiltrator units
including 40 for Phase I, 8 for Phase II, and 20 for Phase III. It is proposed to install 48 units
(3 rows). This will be adequate to serve Phases I and II.
Each trench will require a 4-inch vented inspection portal at the end of the row. Each row must
be constructed at a level grade. Adjacent rows can be at the same grade or lower than the
previous row.
The system layout is shown on the attached Figures 3 and 4.
WWE is available to provide construction observation for the project.

RE. Daniels property ---- ISDS
Dear Ms- Trujillo.,
As a follow up to our conversation on July 18, 1996, this letter clarifies the proposed
improvements and provides additional information on setbacks from the Ieachfield to the
Stremme Gates Ditcb, Eagle River, "filtration pond," and potable water Ririe.
The proposed construction includ 4 fr trators as described in the text of Our July 10, 1996
letter report. The tote on Figure 3 (attached) has been revised for 48 units. The proposed
(:OnstIUt OM would SCPve all of phase I and Phase 11.
The setbacks from the leachfield to various water structures is given, below.

Although the Stremme Crates Ditch is closer than the recommended setback, it is.the opinion of
Wright Water Engineers ('17VWE) that the Daniels ISDS will not adversely impact the water °
quality of the ditch. As shown in the attached sketch labeled Figure 5, the dkh elevation is
such dal the ptatolating effluent would not be i.nterceptea.

The "filtering pond" label on the bast mp is actually a dry stormwater infiltration pond which
includes a filter media of sand and filter fabric for "treatment" of the storruwater. It is our
understanding that there is no setback requirement for this structure.
By reference herein to WWE's July 10, 1996 letter report, this letter and attackwnts, along
with the report, represent our design for the system.
Please call if you have any questions.
Very truly yours,
