SEPTIC SYSTEM APPLICATION MAYNE RESIDENCE LOT 19 IK BAR RANCH GYPSUM, COLORADO Prepared for: Western Slope Constructors, Inc. Dan Lister P.O. Box 694 Gypsum, CO 81637 Prepared by: Alpine Engineering, Inc. P.O. Box 97 Edwards, CO 81632 (970) 926-3373 SEPTIC SYSTEM APPLICATION INTRODUCTION Lot 1, IK Bar Ranch is a residential property located in the Gypsum Creek drainage, south of Gypsum, Eagle County, Colorado. The property was formerly ranch land with no improvements, and is not located within a sanitation district. The owner proposes construction of a single-family dwelling on the site. It is proposed that an individual sewage disposal system (ISDS) be installed to serve the proposed development. PROPOSED USE The proposed ISDS system will serve a 7 bedroom single-family dwelling. QUANTITY OF SEWAGE (7 Bedrooms)(2 persons/bedroom)(75 gpd)(1.5 peaking factor) = 1,575 gpd SEPTIC TANK SIZE 1,575 gpd x 30 hrs/day = 1,969 gallons 24 hrs/day Round to 2,000 gallon total tank capacity. If two 1,000 gallon tanks are used, the first tank in series shall have no baffle; the second tank in series shall be baffled. SOILS INVESTIGATION On May 6, 1996, a soil profile pit was excavated by backhoe in the proposed area of the absorption system. The following soil profile was observed: from the ground surface to a depth of approximately 1.7 feet the soil consisted of redish brown loam with little organic material (this land has been tilled and the natural topsoil structure disturbed and compacted), followed by a sandy silt with gravel- to cobble -sized rocks extending to the bottom of the pit at 8 feet. Group wa er was encoun ere ep o eet. Evidence of a seasonal high water table was not observed. Percolation tests were performed at the proposed absorption trench location on the same day. Three test holes were hand -dug to a de th of 1.5 feet. Soils encountered were consistant with the profile pit and consisted of redish brown loam. Neither groundwater nor evidence of a seasonal high water table were observed. The average percolation rate of the three holes was 6.5 minutes per inch (MPI). Soils having a percolation rate less than 5 MPI are not suitable for the disposal of wastewater. The percolation rates in each hole were sufficient. Due to the shallow groundwater elevation on site, a mound system has been designed. Infiltrators should be placed at or just below the elevation of the existing ground surface Application for ISDS Permit 1 Lot 1, IK Bar Ranch following leveling and scarification to a depth of 3 inches. Soils used to cover infiltrators can be of variable composition, but should be able to support grass growth. TRENCH DESIGN A = Q/5 (T)o.s A = (1,575 gpd/5) (6.5 mpi)o.s n A = 803 SF Check with loading rate: For the type of soils found on site, the EPA Design Manual: Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems recommends a maximum application rate of 0.8 gallons per square foot per day. 1,575 g12 0.8 gal/ft' t This area will be used for design. with a 50% reduction for infiltrators = 984 SF Number of Infiltratoor. Units: n 984 SF 55 Infiltrator Units V 18 SF/Infiltrator— `"' Length of Trenches: 55 infiltrator units x 6.25 ft./infiltrator unit = 3 trenches at 87.5 ft. long each 4 trenches and 1 trench at 81.25 ft. MOUND SYSTEM The area proposed for the absorption lines is relatively flat and will require only minimal grading to provide a level surface on which to place infiltrators. If infiltrators are placed directly on the existing ground surface, the native surface should be scarified to aptb_3 inches. The base of the infiltrator units may be placed up to 0.5 feet below the elevation of th- x sting ground surface to decrease fill required for adequate cover. Native or non-native materials will be used to cover the infiltrators to a depth of 1.0 - 1.5 feet. The mound will be appropriately revegetated. Application for ISDS Permit 2 Lot 1, IK Bar Ranch DOSING VOLUME Because the proposed area of the absorption trenches will be topographically higher than the septic tank inverts, pumps will be required to dose the infiltrators. - - ._-.1 1,575 ap = 400 gallons per dose 4 doses per day A 500 gallon dosing tank will be situated down -stream of the septic tank, providing room fore pumps and appurtanences. PUMP SYSTEM The dosing tank will have a volume of 500 gallons and should be sufficient to house the pumps and appurtanences and provide the dosing volume. A high float switch will trigger duplexing (alternation) of the two pumps and a low float switch will turn the pumps off at the end of the dosing cycle. A float switch placed above the high switch will cause both pumps to start (if one fails the other will pump) and trigger an alarm indicating failure of the pump. The alarm will be wired to a control panel located in the residential structure to alert the owners of the need for maintenance. The force main will be installed with a high point so that at the end of the pumping cycle effluent in the line will gravity drain to the infiltrators or back into the dosing chamber (via a small hole in the line, located in the tank just above the pumps). Design of the pumps, electronics and appurtanences will be by others. APPLICABLE SETBACKS The proposed location of the septic tank and absorption trenches is outside of all applicable setback distances. The property will be served by a domestic water well. The well is not yet installed and should be located at least 146 feet from the absorption trenches and at least 50 feet from the septic tank and lines.
