O. Box 8796 Aspen, CO 81612 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Tests for Individual Sewage System Design for Lot 21, Aspen Mesa Estates Subdivision, Eagle County, CO, Numbered as 0235 Sierra Vista Drive Dear Tim and Gina, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Sections 4.04 and 4.05, Chapter IV (Individual Sewage Disposal Systems) of the Eagle County Code on March 21, 1996. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered during our site visits. Proposed Construction: The plans for the residence are for a three bedroom, two bathroom, with aotential of an additional studio or one a room caretaker uni in the two-story house, over the garage E The location of the proposed residence and the area for the sewage disposal field are shown on Figure 1. Without water conserving toilets, the ultimate wastewater flow from this residence is estimated to average 450 gallons per day (GPD), as specified in the Eagle County Code. This flow could increase to 600 gallons per d once the separate, attached apartment is finished.P . t I Site Conditions:D5( The investigated site is a lot of 1.902 acres on Missouri Heights. The property is served by a subdivision well and pumping station, located on the northeastern corner of ;lY1.pfA the property. There is also a large water storage tank behind the designated building 51 site above the property. There is an abandoned irrigation ditch and a ten foot ditch easement traversing the lot just below the proposed building site. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes to the Southeast at a grade of less than 10%. There was a typical vegetation pattern of sagebrush, rabbit brush, grasses, and a few pinyon pine and juniper over the P.O. Below the ditch the property is primarily meadow vegetated with wheat and rice grasses and weeds. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit, just belo within 15 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated to a depth o nine feet. No Ground water was encountered in the profile excavation. Bedrock was not present within profile pit. However, there was some small, loose cobble basalt rock within the subsoil matrix> These rocks were from three 6 inches to eight incilps in diameter and were sparsely intermixed within the subsoil from approximately fou feet and down The soil textures encountered were a loam topsoil about eight inchesIn depth overlyi g a reddish clay loam layer twenty-two inches deep. Below that was a calcareous loam and sandy_clay loam to the depth of the profile hole. The soil was moist to a ept of twenty inches from the snow melt occurring during the week. Percolation Testing: The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate locations also shown on Figure 1. The test holes were hand dug in the area of the proposed septic system absorption field. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of clay loam or sandy clay loan. This soil was well consolidated, and showed little tendency to swell. There was a slight amount smearing and compaction observed in the shallower subsoil layers of the backhoe excavation to dig the profile hole. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area Southeast of the flagged building area. Four inches of gravel were placed in the bottom of each hole. The holes were dug to a total depth of between 34 and 36 inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked beginning m the morning of the a,da day the percolation testing was performed. Six gallons 'o'f water tC ere added to each hole in the initial presoak The test holes were then refilled to a depth of fourteen inches approximately every two hours for an eight hour period before beginning the percolation test measurements. The water level in the test holes was adjusted to be from six to ten inches above the bottom of the holes before beginning measurements. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table 1. These results indicate the clay loam and sandy clay loam soils have an average . percolation rate of 21 Young Property Septic System Site Evaluation March 25, 1996 Page 3 minutes per inch and are considered acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on -site sewage system. Minimum Eagle County Requirements: The minimum Eagle County requirements for this installation are based on a system loaded at an average of 450 gallons per day. This flow would require a septic tank of 1000 gallons and a minimum of approximately 1080 square feet of standard absorption trench or 540 square feet if "InfiltratorTm" graveless leaching chamber sections. If the system is to be sized for the caretaker unit, the tank size would need to be increased to 1250 gallons, and the absorption trench system increased to 1320 square feet. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soil across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, All?'Ieell_ Robert F.
