We conducted this study according to Sections 4.04 and 4.05 , Chanter Se IV (Individual wage Disposal Sygtemsl of the Eagle County Code on April 25,1995. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Eagle County Environmental Health Department at our earliest opportunity. Please complete the permit application we have delivered and pay the $150.00 permit fee so that the permit to construct this sewage system can be completed. proposed Construction: The planned residence is a three bedroom, two and one half bathroom, two-story house with approximately 2000 square feet. Sits Conditions: The site is a lot on Missouri Heights. The property is served by a subdivision well. The lot is approximately 4.1 acres in size. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes rather gently to the Southeast at a 5% grade. There are no irrigation ditches or water courses in the area. The typical vegetation pattern of the area, consisting of wheatgrasses, rabbit brush, and sagebrush was predominant on the property. n Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit was not excavated at the time of this investigation. This must be done to obtain the-fial individual sewage disposal permit from Eagle County. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figures 1 and 2 The test holes were hand dug in the location of the proposed absorption field before our arrival at the site. Several inches of gravel were placed in the bottom of each hole. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of P.O. Box 6961 Snowmass Viiiage, CO.81615 Office (303) 923.3289 Home (303) 923.2766 Bontempo Property Lot 3, Harmony View Subdivision May 9, 1995 Page 2 loam and clay loam. This soil was well consolidated, and showed a slight tendency to shrink or swell with moisture content. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area Southeast of the staked building footprint. Three shallow holes were hand dug to a depth of thirty two -inches and were approximately six inches in diameter. The percolation holes had been excavated earlier and were pre-soaked the morning before testing. The water was initially added approximately eight hours before beginning the percolation test measurements and refilled to a depth of ten inches above the gravel once more two hours before. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the clay loam soils have an average percolation rate of 17.3 minutes per inch and are considered Ik acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on -site sewage system. Minimum Eagle County Requirements: The minimum Eagle County requirements for this installation are based on a system flow of 450 gallons per day. This flow would require a septic tank of 1000 gallons minimum volume, and a minimum of 610 square feet of standard absorption trench, defined as follows: A standard absorption trench is an excavation less than three -feet (3') wide and containing a single 3 or 4-inch (3" or 4") perforated distribution pipe in the center. A minimum of six- _ inches (67) of 1/2 inch to 2 1/z inch diameter clean, graded gravel is placed under the distribution pipe. A sufficient amount of additional gravel is placed around and over the distribution pipe and to bed and cover the pipe with a minimum of two inches (2") of gravel above the top of the pipe. A minimum of two trenches of near equal length is required for any installation of this type. Recommended On -site Wastewater Disposal Design: We recommend that you install a septic tank with a volume of 1250 gallons to increase detention time and to provide sufficient volume to allow for a fourth bedroom in the house, if remodeled at some future date. An alternative design for the absorption field would incorporate an arrangement of graveless "Infiltrator" s or "Biodiffusefm leaching chambers. The use of the leaching chamber systems permits a reduction of approximately 50% in absorption area required under County regulations. This reduction is based on manufacturer's claims and on an approval of such a reduction by the Colorado Department of Heahh, Water Quality Control Division. The absorption field could then Bontempo Property Lot 3, Harmony View Subdivision May 9, 1995 Page 3 consist of two trenches, each 63 feet in length and containing 20 sections of Infiltrator. We are enclosing some technical specifications sheets and installation guidelines to give you a clearer idea of the construction of an absorption system using these products. It is desirable to use a distribution box to equalize the flow to each of the trenches. The distribution box is placed between the septic tank and the leaching trenches and connected to each with a piece of solid PVC pipe. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, Robert F. O. Box 179 Eagle, Colorado 81631 Subject: Soils Evaluation for Individual Sewage System Design for the Bontempo Residence, Lot 3, Harmony View Subdivision On June 30, 1995, we evaluated the soil profile hole excavated on the referenced property. The subsoil to a depth of eight feet consisted of loam and clay loam. The top four feet was a darker brown soil with a subangular blocky structure, and the soils in the lower four feet were lighter in color and somewhat calcareous. 'There was some loose basalt rock in the bottom foot of the profile pit. The soil was dry, well consolidated, and showed a slight tendency to shrink or swell with moisture content and to compact under the pressure of the excavating equipment. We have attached an updated soil evaluation sheet to reflect the profile excavation. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, Robert F.
