Navon Bnvironmmhd & Wastewater Sorudonm ,L E W August 22., 1994 s Mr. John Wix P. 0. Box 1730 Basalt CO 81621 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System. Design for a Parcel of Land above IReudi Reservoir on Frying Pan Road Dear John, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Sections 4.04 and 4.05 , Chi er V (Individual Sewage Qxgnsal Systems) of the Eagle County Code on August 18, 1994. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. The planned residence is a one bathroom, one-story log cabin with approximately 400 square feet of living area. The wastewater flow from this residence is estimated to be 260 gallons per day (GPD)• Site Conditions: The investigated site is a 15 acne lot Frying Pan )(toad. The property is to be served by a well. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes rather gently to the Southeast at a 10% grade and is located in a small meadow surrounded by steep hillside. There is a small stream to the east of the building site approximately 100 feet east and 15 feet below the building site. The foundation of the house was excavated at the time of our investigation, but otherwise, the site was vacant except for a shed roof and camper trailer_ There was a typical vegetation pattern of grasses and weeds in the meadow with aspen trees adjacent to the stream. A soil profile pit, within 25 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated to a depth of seven and one-half feet. Ground water was encountered in the profile excavation, standing at 81 inches below the surface of the ground. Bedrock was not present within seven and one half feet of the surface of the ground. However, there was an abundance of loose cobble below the topsoil layer and within the subsoil matrix "Ifliches, These rocks were ;from three inches to twenty - inches in diameter and intermixed with t e subsoil from approximately six feet and down_ The soil textures encountered were a coarse loam topsoil to six feet, grading into a matrix of silty sand C,' M s P.O. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were hand dug in the location of the proposed absorption field before our arrival at the site to a depth of thirty inches. The test holes were abouteight inches in diameter. Six inches of gravel were placed in the bottom of each hole. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of coarse granular loam with a platy structure. This soil was well consolidated, and showed no tendency to swell_ No smearing or compaction was observed in the profile pit. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area Southwest of the building footprint. Three shallow holes were hand dug to a depth of thirty inches. The percolation holes had been dug earlier, and were pre-soaked the morning before the percolation testing measurements. The day of the test, water was added to each test hole approximately every ten to twenty minutes for five hours before beginning the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the loam soils have an average percolation rate of less than 1 minute per inch and are not acceptable for an infiltration design for the on -site sewage system due to the very rapid permeability. Minimum Es9kC20RU RMiMrne00: The presence of the groundwater and the very rapid absorption rate observed will require an ov- site system design,. The usual nlinimt m Eagle County requirements for this installation are based on a system flow of 260 gallons per day_ This flow would require a septic tank of 750 gallons minimum volume, and a minimum. of 325 square feet of absorption trench, defined as follows: The absorption trenches are excavated less than three -feet (3) wide and contain a single 4- inch (4") perforated distribution pipe in the center. A minimum of six -inches (6") of 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch diameter gravel is placed under the distribution pipe. A sufficient amount of additional gravel is placed around and over the distribution pipe and to bed and cover the pipe with a minimum of two inches (2") of gravel. The trench is then backfilled with a minimum of twelve inches of cover. Reeammendcd On -bite Waatt attr D There are two issues to address in this design. The first is the removal of the lushest layers of the G7f Ui t 1774 11 . 1b ,JUd JZJZ f bb BUB NELSUN, NLW!-, L i D PAGE 04 Wix Property Frying Pan River Road August 22, 1994 Page 3 loam topsoil replacement with a uniforra sand to slow the absorption rate and provide an effective filter. The second is the size and arrangement of the absorption field_ To avoid the construction of the absorption field in the .rapidly permeable soil, it would appear that the trenches will need to be over excavated and the soil replaced with four feet of sand under the gravel lines. Another option would be to plane the absorption trenches in the crown of a constructed sand mound. With the measured percolation rates, we would recommended the septic system design, in either case, consist of 1000-gallon septic tank and 325 square feet of absorption. trenches. An alternative design could incorporate an arrangement of graveless "Infiltrator" @ leaching chambers. The site is quite a distance from Basalt on a winding road and presents a time consuming haul to get gravel to the property. ,As a result, we believe that the access to this relatively remote area makes the use of gravel less attractive, and would suggest that you plana, method of construction which uses one of the gmaveless systems. The use of the "lt Itrator"M leaching chambers, or the like, permits a 50119 reduction in bottom area of the trench under County regulations because this surface is not masked with gravel. This reduction is based on manufacturer's claims and on an approval of such a reduction by the Colorado Department of Health, Water Quality Control Division. The absorption field could then consist of two trenches, each 32 feet in length and containing 5 sections of Infiltrator. Limi t tions: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions considerably different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, Robert F. Installed were two 30-foot trenches, a 750 gallon septic tank and cleanouts as required. Although .the trenches are at different based elevations, the level header pipe will evenly distribute effluent to each trench. It was evident that sand was installed under the infiltrator units, but I did not verify the actual depth. In conclusion, it appears the ISDS was installed as per plans prepared by SGM dated September 6, 1994, and subsequently approved by Eagle County.
