We recommend the potential for future debris flow activity be evaluated by an engineering geologist. An evaluation of potential geologic hazards at the site is beyond the scope of our current study. Subsurface Conditions: The subsurface conditions at the site were evaluated by excavating two exploratory pits at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The logs of, the pits are presented on Fig. 2. The subsoils encountered in Pit 1, below about 1 foot of topsoil, consist of low density sandy silt to a depth of 5 feet. Below the sandy silt, stiff sandy silty clay was encountered. The clay soil was encountered in Pit 2 below about 1 foot of topsoil to . the full depth of exploration, 9 feet. Results of consolidation testing performed on a relatively undisturbed sample of the upper sandy silt soil from Pit 1, shown on Fig. 4, indicate a moderate potential for settlement when wetted under constant light surcharge (collapse) and high compressibility upon additional loading. Results of consolidation tests performed on a sample of the stiff clay soil from Pit 2, shown on Fig. 5, indicate a low potential for collapse when wetted under constant light surcharge and moderate compressibility upon additional loading. Laboratory testing is summarized on Table I. No free water was observed in the pits at the time of excavation. Foundation Recommendations: Considering the subsoils encountered in the exploratory pits and the nature of the proposed construction, we recommend spread footings placed on the lower stiff clay soil encountered in Pit 1 below a depth of 5 feet and in Pit 2 below a depth of 1 foot for support of the proposed residence. The spread footings should be designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 1500 psf. We expect settlement of foundations constructed as described in this section will be on the order of 1 inch. Additional differential settlement and building distress could occur if foundation soils become wet. Surface runoff, irrigation, and utility leakage are possible sources of water which could cause wetting. Footings should continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Topsoil, low be a minimum width of 16 inches for ntered at the foundation bearing level within the density silt, loose and disturbed soils encou excavation should be removed and the footings extended down to adequate natural bearing material. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Placement of footings at least 42 inches below the exterior grade is typically used in this area. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Heavily reinforced concrete foundation walls are recommended for the building support to limit distress to the building in the event of some differential settlement. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 50 pcf. Floor Slabs: The natural on -site soils, exclusive of topsoil, are suitable to support lightly loaded slab -on -grade construction. There is a risk of some differential movement caused by wetting of the subsoils. To reduce the effects of some differential movement, floor slabs. should be separated from all bearing walls ancolumns ointswith be expansion nts which allow reduce damage unrestrained vertical movement. Locations of exploratory pits were measured approximately by pacing from features shown on the site plan provided. 3. Relative elevations of exploratory pits were measured by hand level. 4. The exploratory pit locations and elevations should be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method used. 5. The lines between materials shown on the exploratory pit logs represent the approximate boundaries between material types and transitions may be gradual. 6.
