Subject Soils Evaluation and
Sewage System Design for a Parcel
Hooks Lane, Basalt, CO 81621
Dear Don,
Percolation Test for Individual
of Land on Lot S, Red Rock Ranch,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd.,
performed a soils study and percolation testing for design of a
septic system for the proposed residence at the subject site. This
property is owned by William and Barbara Bleeker. The study was
conducted in accordance with Section 4.05 of EaRle County
Regulations on -site Sewage Disposal Systems on Friday, February 15,
1994. The data obtained and our recommendations are based on the
proposed system construction and subsurface conditions encountered:.
Proposed Construction:
The residence is to be a four bedroom, three bathroom house. The
property is served by an individual well and is approximately 20
acres in size.
Site Conditions.
The site is a lot in the Diver Rock Ranch Tracts several hundred
feet from the Roaring Fork River.
The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of
the absorption field, slopes rather gently to the North at about a
5% grade. There are several irrigation ditches on the site.
Subsurface Conditions:
The sewage system location was selected with the subdivision
condition of a minimum separation of 200 feet from the well head in
mind.
A soil profile pit, within the proposed absorption area, was
excavated to a depth of seven and one-half feet. The excavation
revealed that no groundwater or bedrock present to that depth.
The subsurface sail conditions were evaluated with the standard
percolatiot test procedures at the approximate location shown on
Figure 1. The test holes were excavated a few days prior to our
arrival at the site for the percolation tests. The holes were
covered and insulated and the soil was not frozen below a depth of
about two feet.

The subsoil consisted of clay loams &nd dense clays to a depth of
forty-six inches. 'These reddish brown clay loams were
characteristically platy. These soils were well consolidated. The
final forty-one inches of the profile consisted of a silty loam and
gravel with some cobble, three to twenty inches in diameter.
Pexcolstion Testing:
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench
area Northeast of the building envelope, This testing was
Performed in two of three shallow hales excavated with a backhoe to
a depth of five feet. One of the three holes had collapsed and it
was not possible to do a test with any assurance of accuracy.
Small hand --dug holes, twelve inches in diameter, were placed in the
bottom of each backhoe excavation. The ;Percolation holes had been
Pre-soaked the morning before our testing. The weather was warm
and cloudy, and the water did not freeze in the holes for the
presoaking period.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I.
These results indicate the gravelly clay soils at depths of five
feet or more have an average percolation rate of 11 minutes per
inch and are acceptable for a deep trench infiltration design for
the on -site sewage system. I- -
Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with
generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage
disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations
submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site
visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that
the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across
the site may not have been evident at the time of this
investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further
excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This
office should be advised of these situations as soon as possible so
reevaluation of our recommendations can be done.
If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please
call the office.
sincerely,
Robert F. Nelson
