Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Ttst for Individual Sewage System Design for a Parcel
ofLand, Lot 3, Block A, Aspen Mess Estates, located on Fender Lane
Dear Shannon,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and
percolation tests to design a septic system fbr the proposed residence. We conducted this study
according to Section VII. of the Colorado Department of Health - Guidelines for Individual
Sewage Systems (19U) on April 25, 1994. We have based our recommendations on the
subsurface conditions encountered.
The planned residence is a three bedroom, two and one half bathroom, two-story house with.
approximately 2000 square feet.
The site is a lot on Mssouri Heights. The property is served by subdivision wells. The lot is
approximately l .6 acres in size.
The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption Meld, slopes
rather gently to the South or Southeast at a 5% grade. There are no irrigation ditches or water
courses in the area.
A soil profile pit, within 85 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated to a depth of
eight and one quarter feet. The excavation encountered no ground water. Bedrock was not
present within eight feet of the surface of the ground_ There were some loose cobbles to six -
inches in diameter intermixed with the sou matrix from approximately four feet and down. The
soil textures encountered were a loam topsoil about twenty inches deep; a clay loam about
twenty-six inches deep that grades into a sandy clay loam to the bottom of the profile hole, with
some decrease in the clay content with depth.

The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the
approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test hales were hand ding in the location of the
proposed absorption field before our arrival at the site. Several inches of gravel placed in the
bottom of each hole. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of loam or
clay loam. This soil was well consolidated, and showed some tendency to swell. Some smearing
and compaction was observed in the profile pit.
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area Southwest of the stalled
building footprint. Nine shallow holes were hand dug to a depth of twenty-one to thirty two -
inches. The percolation holes had been excav t a i'erarad pre-soaked the morning before
testing. The water was added approxima five hours befo 'nning thepercolation t-
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the clay
loam soils have an average percolation rate of 35 minutes per inch and are acceptable for a
conventional infiltration design for the on -site sewage system..
Minimum >Ea►eit Gganty Rtaairtnmtnta:
- ,o
The minimum Eagle County requirements for this installation are based on a system flow , f 450\' i
gallons per day. This flow would, require a septic tank of 1000 gallons minimum volume,
minimum of $10 square feet of standard absorption trench, defined as follows:
A standard absorption trench is an excavation less than three -feet (Y) wide and containing
a single 4-inch (4") perforated distribution pipe in the center. A minimum of six -inches
(6") of 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch diameter gravel is placed under the distribution pipe. A
sufficient amount of additional gravel is placed around and over the distribution pipe and
to bed and rover the pipe with a minimum of two inches (2") of gravel.
A minimum of two trenches is required for any installation.
Recommended On -site iXtMj r DIgRgEd 81;g
Due to the variability of the measured percolation rates, we recommended the septic system
design consist of 1250-gallon septic tank and 1200 square feet of"standard" absorption trenches.

An alternative design would incorporate an arrangement of graveless "Infiltrator" @ leaching
chambers. The use of the "Infiltrator" TM leaching chambers, or the like, permits a 50%
reduction in absorption area under County regulations. This reduction is based on
manufacturer's claims and on an approval of such a reduction by the Colorado Department of
Health, Water duality Control Division. absorption field could there consist of three
trenches 6 in le h an conta► tins, of Infiltrator. -
3,V
It is desirable to use distribution b equalize the flow to each of the trenches, The
distribution box is place en . e septic tank and the leaching trenches and connected to each
with a piece of solid PVC pipe. c
Ljoitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this axes
for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this mport are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated_ 'There is
some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may
not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if
further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations.
If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office.
Sincerely,
- 41- r-1
