CQ y tiry Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual l,e System Design for a Parcel of Land, Lot 33, Aspen Mesa Estates, Filing I,ated on 0574 Escalante aa Dear Jamie, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence owned by Robert and Judy Stumpus. We conducted this study according to Section VII. of the Colorado Department of Health - Guidelines for Individual Sewage Systems (1988) on Wednesday, November 17, 1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. By copy, we are furnishing this letter to the Eagle County Environmental Health Department to complete the permit records to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The planned residence is a three bedroom, two bathroom, two-story house with approximately 3000 square feet. The property is served by subdivision wells. The lot is approximately 3 acres in size. Site Conditions: The site is a lot on Missouri Heights. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes rather gently to the South or Southwest at a 10% grade. There are no water courses or irrigation ditches in the area. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit, within 15 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated to a depth of seventy four inches. The excavation encountered no ground water. Bedrock was not present within six feet of the surface of the ground. The top thirteen inches was a dark loam topsoil. Larger boulders of basalt were observed on the surface. Below that there were some loose cobbles of sandstone and basalt to eight inches in diameter intermixed with the soil matrix. The soil texture was a sandy loam, with some decrease in the clay content with depth. The soil was calcareous. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were dug with a backhoe in the location of the proposed absorption field before our arrival at the site, and we completed the.excavation by placing a small twelve - inch diameter hole in the bottom of each backhoe pit. Several inches of gravel P.O. Box 6961 Snowmass Village, CO.81615 Office (303) 923.3289 Home (303) 923•2766 Stumpus Residence Soils Evaluation and Test for Individual November 23, 1993 Page 2 Percolation Sewage System Design placed on the bottom of each hole. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of sandy clay loam, which extended to a depth of forty to forty-seven inches at the bottom of the percolation test pits. This tan soil was well consolidated, and showed little tendency to swell, although some smearing and compaction was observed in the profile pit. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area Southwest of the building site. Three shallow holes were hand dug to a total depth of.forty to forty-seven inches. The water was added approximately four hours before beginning the percolation test and the bottom of the test holes was kept submerged during the presoaking period. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy clay loam soils have an average percolation rate of 35 minutes per inch and are acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on - site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes.. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluation of our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, Robert F.
