The results of the percolation test and findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our Agreement for Ceotechnical Engineering Services to you, dated august 27, 1993. Tf,e proposed residence will consist of a two-story wood frame structure over a partial basement. An infiltration septic leach field is proposed southeast of the building area. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in two levels from 3 to 12 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of sandy clay. Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on samples taken from the bottom of the excavation are shown on Fig_ 1. The results indicate the clay, sails have a, moderate potential for settlement when wetted under constant light loading conditions (collapse) and are moderately compressible upon additional loading. Additional laboratory testing results are summarized on Table 1. No free water was observed in the excavation at the time of our site visit. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure ofpsf should be adequate for support of the proposed residence. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous wails and 2 feet for columns. Louse and disturbed soils were observed at the foundation bearing level' within the excavation and they should be removed and the footings extended down to adequate natural bearing material or compacted prior to placement of concrete. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their hearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist: a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of 55 pef. A. perimeter foundation drain sbould be provided to prevent temptarabuildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. The drain ould be isolated from the foundation bearing soils with an impervious membrane such as 20 t.PVC to prevent wetting of the soils below the footings. If fill is placed within floor Larry Moore September 21, 1993 Page 2 slab areas, it can consist of the on -site soils devoid of topsoil and compacted to at, least 95%b of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. 13ackfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. Percolation testing was performed at the: subject site on August 30, 1993. The proposed leach field is located approximately 75 feet southeast of the proposed residence. INFRk;..u..ta .►►. . ,The soils encountered in the profile pit below ore -foot of topsoil consisted of a slightly gravelly sandy clay. The percolation test boles had been excavated and saturated prior to our site visit. The percolation test depths and rates are summarized on Table II. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation. Since we dad not conduct subsurface exploration, we have assumed the conditions observed in the excavation represent those within the depth of influence of the foundation. Variations in the subsurface conditions could impact the performance of the foundation. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling could be required.. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
