Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System
Design for a Parcel of Land, Lot 10, Aspen View Acres, located on Grange Way
Dear Lee,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a
soils study and percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed
residence. We conducted this study according to Section VII. of the Colorado
Department of Health- Guidelines for Individual Sewage Systems (1988) on Friday,
June 25, 1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions
encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Eagle County Environmental Health
Department at your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this
individual sewage system.
Proposed Construction:
The planned residence is
approximately 3000 square
The lot is approximately
Site Conditions:
a three bedroom, two bathroom, two-story house with
feet. The property is served by subdivision wells.
1 acre in size.
The site is a lot on Missouri Heights.
The ground surface,. which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption
field, slopes rather gently to the South or Southeast at a 5% grade. There are
irrigation ditches in the area, approximately 150 feet below the proposed
absorption system.
Subsurface Conditions:
A soil profile pit, within 15 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated
to a depth of eight feet. The excavation encountered no ground water. Bedrock
was not present within eight feet of the surface of the ground. There were some
loose cobbles intermixed with the soil matrix from three feet down. The soil
texture was a sandy clay, with some decrease in the clay content with depth.
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test
procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were
dug with a backhoe in the location of the proposed absorption field before our
arrival at the site, and we completed the excavation by placing a small twelve -
inch diameter hole in the bottom of each backhoe pit. Several inches of gravel
1
P.O. Box 6961 Snowmass Village, CO.81615 Office (303) 923.3289 Home (303) 923.2766
placed on the bottom of each hole. The subsoil in which the percolation testing
was run, consisted of sandy clay loam, which extended to a depth of fifty seven
inches at the bottom of the percolation test pits. This tan soil was well
consolidated, and showed little tendency to swell, although some smearing and
compaction was observed in the profile pit.
Percolation Testing:
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area east of
the building. Three shallow holes were hand dug to a depth of forty-six to
fifty-eight inches. The percolation holes had been excavated earlier and pre-
soaked the morning before testing. The water was added approximately four hours
before beginning the percolation test.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results
indicate the sandy clay loam soils have an average percolation rate of 32 minutes
per inch and are acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on -
site sewage system.
Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted
practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The
conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data
obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some
possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils
across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and
may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different
from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations
as soon as possible so we may reevaluation of our recommendations.
If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the
office.
Sincerely,
Robert F. Nelson

Mmal Inspection of Individual Sewage Disposal System Installation
Dear Tania:
1001 Grand Avenue, Suite 2E
Glenwood Springs, CO 81601
Schmueser Gordon Meyer provided an on -site inspection on September 28, 1993, of the
Richards ISDS installation located at the above -mentioned lot on Aspen Mountain View.
Schmueser Gordon Meyer previously prepared an engineered drawing for the installation of this
ISDS. The date of said drawings was July 8, 1993 entitled "Richards Residence "Individual
Sewage Disposal System", SGM Job #93115. Installation of the system was performed by Lee
Rippy Construction of New Castle, Colorado.
Based upon our observations in the field, the system appears to have been installed per SGM
requirements of the aforementioned engineered plan. A prior investigation on July 24, 1993,
confirmed the installation of the components identified in the proposed engineered plan. The
final inspection performed on September 28, 1993, confirmed the final backfill of the system and
the presence of the air vents (inspection ports) required for the system.
Upon your review of this letter, if you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate
to call.
Sincerely,

RE: Individual Sewage bisposal benign (ISDS), Performance Standard
Era Parcel of Land Located on Aspen View Acres Eaaie caunty. CO
Dear Lee:
Per your request, SGM has evaluated the results of percolation testing performed by Nelson
Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd. Based upon this percolation testing and soils
testing performed for the above -mentioned site, we are able to provide a performance
standard as to the type of ISDS required for this particular lot. My understanding is that the
proposed construction for this lot is a 3-bedroom residence. Based upon a 3-bedroom,
residence and conclusions made in the Soils report, we feel a standard type system is
appCcable for wastewater disposal on this :particular lot. We have determined that, for a 3-
bedroom residence, the peak design flow is 675 gallons per day (gpd). Based upon 30 hours
detention (per State of Colorado Health Department node), this warrants the use of a 1000
gallon septic tank for treatment of waste prior to percolation into the native soils.
Based upon the 32 rnpi percolation rate derived through soils testing, we have determined the
following square footages for subsurface disposal (through percolation): J
763.7 SF
992.81 SF
458.22 SF
595.69 SF r' 4
(16 `mil 0
With either of the infiltrator options identified above, we would recommend that each
infiltrator distribution be equally loaded. a system would require the use
of a distribuiao i µ n out. to each individual infiltr r eric ` to addition,
each individual infiltrator trench would be required to have the same length. if this not
possible, some sort of proportional splltter box (within distribution box) would be required to
proportionately load each infiltrator trench according to its proportion of the total absorption
area provided.
1. Standard absorption trench (With gravel)
2. Standard absorption bed (with gravel)
3. Standard infiltrator trench (giaveless system)
4. Infiltrator bed (graveless)
In addition to the distribution box Just discussed, we would also recommend that each
infiltrator lateral be provided and inspection for (and/or) air vent. Based upon our prior
discussions, we are assuming that you will be instalCng the infiltrator trench type system
according to the square footage noted above. We will be faxing a copy of tfkis letter to Eagle
County Environmental Health. We are still waiting, however, for site plan information
necessaryto provide a detailed layout and the construction drawing for the ISDS as discussed
