REVISED PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AN INDIVIDUAL SANITARY MZE7 SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM LOT 2, BELLYACHE RIDGE SUBDIVISION FILING NO. 2 PREPARED FOR COBURN DEVELOPMENT, INC. 2104 BLUFF BOULDER, CO 80304 PROJECT NO. 91200E AUGUST 1991 Box No. 978 • Avon, Colorado 81620 • 949-5072 Denver 893-1531 1420 Vance Street • Lakewood, Colorado 80215 • Phone: 232-0158 SCOPE 1 This report presents the results of percolation tests and provides design recommendations for an individual sanitary sewage disposal system for Lot 2, Bellyache Ridge Subdivision, Filing No. 2 in Eagle County, Colorado. SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The site is located in unincorporated Eagle County, south of Wolcott, Colorado. Th thirty five acre l 's partially wooded and generally drains to the south. The slope in the vicinity of the septic system is 12%. The distance from the septic system to the nearest downhill property line is approximately 200 feet. FIELD INVESTIGATION & SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The field investigation was performed as a part of a Soils and Foundation Investigation for this lot. Two test pits were dug with a conventional backhoe. Less than 3 feet of topsoil was underlain by weathered, bedded sandstone to the maximum depth explored of 6.5 feet. The bedrock was hard and is anticipated to have little to no expansion potential. The backhoe used to excavate the test pits was unable to penetrate the bedrock past 5 to 6.5 feet. Percolation tests were performed on three test holes located in the vicinity of the proposed leach field. The holes were . excavated to a depth at approximately 30 inches. 2 PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS Percolation test were performed in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. Results of our test are as follows: Test Hole Minutes/ 1" Drop a 1 11 L 2 11 ,3 9 Average time for a 1" drop: 10.3 minutes. DISCUSSION Eagle County requirements for Individual Sewage Disposal Systems prohibit the use of conventional soils absorption systems `- when bedrock occurs within four feet of the bottom of the bed. .typical leach field trench installations are 30 to 36 inches deep which would violate these regulations. The percolation rate of 10.3 minutes per inch is suitable for absorption fields. Several alternative systems were considered for the disposal of the effluent. They included an elevated mound system, and an evapotranspiration bed, both allowed by Eagle County regulations. An evapotranspiration bed relies primarily on liquid evaporation or transpiration by vegetation as a means of effluent disposal. These systems are generally more effective in sunny locations. The site is south facing, and would be suitable for an evapotranspiration bed, but a recent position taken by the State Water conservation Board regarding the concept of consumptive water 3 C use has caused the county to reject this type of system on this site. VI'he elevated mound system is therefore the system of choice for this site. The system works by discharging the relatively clear effluent from a conventional septic tank into a stone and sand bed which is built up from the existing ground surface. Elevating the bed provides enough clearance over the underlying rock to provide adequate bacteriological treatment of the effluent. The treated effluent gradually works its way downhill and in dispersed by a combination of soil percolation and evaporation. On this site there is ample distance from the proposed mound downstream to the property line for the necessary biologic activity to occur. The client has specified this location for the mound. It is suitable, but dictates to some degree the shape of the mound and the elevation of the lowest portion of the proposed house which can be sewered. Mound systems need to be carefully built to preserve the existing soil characteristics under the mound. Included in this report are guidelines for construction of the system. DESIGN CRITERIA A single family residence is planned for this site. The house will hav ree bedrooms, an automatic washer and a garbage disposal. The system will be designed in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Eagle county Regulations and as 4 supplemented by the 1980 EPA Design Manual "Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems". The following criteria will be used: \Occupancy = 2 persons per bedroom Average Flow = 75 gallons per person per day (GPCD) which includes an Automatic Washer and a Garbage Disposal. Peak Flow = 130% of average flow DESIGN CALCULATIONS Average Flow: Q= 2 persons x 3 bedrooms x 75 GPCD IvQ = 450 gallons per day (GPD) Peak Flow: Qp = 450 GPD x 150% Qp = 675 GPD Mound Design: Absorption Bedf rea, Use 1:2 GPD/ftz (EPA Table 7-8) 675/1.2 Absorption Bed Dimensions: From given site criteria and ground contour locate bed 7' northerly of spot elevation No. 48, 50' in length, and parallel to the ground contour. This locates the mound approximately 50' south and downhill from the house. Then 563 _ 50 = 11.5, use 11.5' width x 50' length Set the bed thickness at 0.8' construct the absorption bed of 3/4" to 2,1/2" clean rock over clean medium sand with the following gradation: >25% 0.25 - 2.0 mm <30-35% 0.05-0.25 mm <5-10% 0.002-0.05 mm Mound Dimensions: From EPA Table 7-9 set the sand fill depth under the high edge of the bed at 1.0 feet, the cap depth at the edge of the bed at 1.0 feet, and the cap depth at the center of the bed at 1.5 feet. Set the finish grade slope around all sides of the mound at 3:1. -- 5 Utilizing an average existing ground slope under the mound of 12% and following the EPA design procedure yields mound dimensions as shown on the attached drawing with an overall length of 74 feet and a width of 40 feet. Pipe Sizing: The appropriate sized dosing siphon will discharge at a rate of 100 to 160 gpm. A 4" plastic pipe at 2% grade from the siphon outlet to the mound will deliver this flow. The absorption bed dimensions accommodate 6 laterals 23' long fed from a central manifold connected to the 4" discharge pipe. Each lateral then discharges 17 gpm to 25 gpm From EPA Table 7-13 select 3/8" diameter holes discharging 1.66 gpm/hole at 1.0' of hydraulic head. At 24" spacing each 23' lateral will have it holes. From EPA Figure 7-28 with 3/8" holes at 2' c-c and lateral length of 23' the lateral diameter is 1 1/211. From EPA Figure 7-29 with a central manifold length of 4' and per lateral flow of 17 gpm to 25 gpm to manifold diameter is 311. From table 4 (section 4.07.01 of the Eagle County Regulations) a 1,000 gallon septic tank will be required for this system. The specified dosing chamber will allow for periodic high rate discharge to the drainage field instead of a slow trickle. This will prolong the life of the field. Fluid Dynamics company model 423 automatic dosing siphon provides the required flow. Peak Flow Doses Per Day = 675 _ 180 = 3.75 1po0 5 ".'11M ? _ea5 tom SEPTIC SYSTEMS RECOMMENDATIONS 6 Based on the proceeding calculations, it is recommended that a 1,OOO gallon compartmented septic tank followed by a l 8o crallon dosing tank and siphon be installed. The effluent should be disposed of in a 563 square foot elevated absorption bed. Details of the proposed system are shown on the enclosed drawing. An inspection of the system should be made by a representative of the Eagle county Environmental Health Department prior to back filling. The installation and material specifications must comply with the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal system Regulations. VA CONSTRUCTION a. Site Preparation Good construction techniques are essential if the mound is to function properly. The following techniques should be used.: Step 1: Rope off the site to prevent damage to the area during other construction activity on the lot. Vehicular traffic over the area should be prohibited to avoid soil compaction. Step 2: Stake out the mound perimeter and bed in the proper orientation. Reference stakes set some distance from the mound perimeter are also suggested in case the corner stakes are disturbed. Step 3: Cut and remove any excessive vegetation. Trees should be cut at ground surface and the stumps left in place. Step 4: Measure the average ground elevation along the upslope edge of the bed to confirm the bottom elevation bed. Contact the Engineer if there are discrepancies. Step 5: Install the delivery pipe from the dosing chamber to the mound. Lay the pipe below the frost line. Back fill and compact the soil around the pipe. Place soil over the pipe in the vicinity of the mound as necessary for frost protection. Step 6: Plow the area within the mound perimeter. Use a two bottom or larger moldboard plow, plowing 7 to 8 in. deep parallel to the contour. Single bottom plows should not be used, as the trace wheel runs in every furrow, compacting the soil. Each furrow should be thrown upslope. A chisel plow may be used in place of a moldboard plow. Roughening the surface with backhoe teeth may be satisfactory, especially in wooded sites with stumps. Rotatilling is not recommended because of the damage it does to the soil structure. Plowing should not be done when the soil is too wet. Smearing and compaction of the soil will occur. If a sample of the soil taken from the plow depth forms a wire when rolled between the palms, the soil is too wet. If it crumbles, plowing may proceed. r 8 b. Fill Placement Step 1: Place the fill material on the upslope edges of the plowed area. Keep trucks off the plowed area. Minimize traffic on the downslope side. Step 2: Move the sand fill material into place using a small track type tractor with a blade. Always keep a minimum of 6 inches of material beneath the tracks of the tractor to minimize compaction of the natural soil. The fill material should be worked in this manner until the height of the fill reaches the elevation of the top of the absorption bed. Step 3: With the blade of the tractor, form the absorption bed. Hand level the bottom of the bed, checking it for the proper elevation. Shape the sides to the desired slope. C. Distribution Network Placement Step 1: Carefully place the coarse aggregate in the bed. Do not create ruts in the bottom of the bed. Level the aggregate to a minimum depth of 6 inches. Step 2: Assemble the distribution network on the aggregate. The laterals should be laid level. Step 3: Place additional aggregate to a depth of at least 2 inches over the crown of the pipe. Step 4: Place a suitable backfill barrier over the aggregate. d. Covering Step 1: Place a finer textured soil material such as clay or silt loam over the top of the bed to a minimum depth of 6 inches. Straw may be placed over this layer to the bottom of the topsoil. Step 2: Place 6 inches of good quality topsoil over the entire mound surface. Step 3: Plant grass over the entire mound using grasses adapted to the area. Shrubs can be planted around the base and up the sideslopes. Shrubs should be somewhat moisture tolerant since the downslope perimeter may become moist during early spring and late fall. Plantings on top of the mound should be drought tolerant, as the upper portion of the mound can become dry during the summer. 9 CONCLUSIONS This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Coburn Development, Inc., for the specific application to the proposed single family home on Lot 2, Bellyache Ridge Subdivision Filing No. 2, Eagle County, Colorado. The system was being constructed as described in the Inter-Mrunta.in Engineering report entitled 'Revised Percolation Test Results, Design Recommendations for an Individual sanitary and Sewage Disposal System, Lot 21 Bellyache Ridge subdivision Filing No. 2, Prepared for Coburn Development, inc. The system is a dosed mound system as described in the report. My two site inspections were at the point where the earth beet had been prepared for the fill sand (which was on -site) and at the point where the perforated distribution laterals were in place on the rock absorption bed and ready for building paper and earth covering. In both instances the construction was per the plan and workmanlike. In our opinion these two observations were dome at the most appropriate moments during the construction, and we believe that the installation is proper. It is noted that grain size distribution which you provided to us met the report specification for medium sand. If you have any questions, please cal . sin y, Gray earson, P.E. Box No. 978 .
