SCOPR This report presents the results of percolation tests and provides design recommendations for an individual sanitary sewage disposal system for Lot_31 Bellyache Ridge Subdivision, Filing No. 2 in Eagle County, Colorado. SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The site is located in unincorporated Eagle County, at 0640 Big Dipper Road, near Wolcott, Colorado. The 1.82 acre lot is wooded and generally drains to the north. No topographical information is available but the slope appears to be approximately 20%. FIELD INVESTIGATION & SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The field investigation was performed on September 9, 1988 as a part of a Soils and Foundation Investigation for this lot. Two test pits were dug with a conventional backhoe and summaries of those test pits are included as figures 1 & 2. Subsurface conditions are fairly uniform with organic silts to a depth of 9 inches, underlain by silts with cobbles to a depth of approximately six feet which is underlain by fractured bedrock. Clay lenses were encountered at depth below 3 feet. Percolation tests were performed on three test holes which " were dug, located, and presoaked by the client. These holes were located approximately fifteen feet east and thirty five feet north of proposed building on an east -west line approximately 15 feet apart. The holes were excavated to a depth of approximately 30 inches. dG,je PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS Percolation test were performed in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. Results of our test are as follows: Test Hole Minutest 1" Drop 1 123 2 112 3 140 Average time.for a 1" drop 125 minutes_ DISCUSSION Eagle County requirements for Individual Sewage Disposal Systems prohibit the use of conventional soils absorption systems when bedrock occurs within four feet of the bottom of the bed. Typical installations are 30 to 36 inches deep which would violate these regulations. The percolation rate of 125 minutes per inch also exceeds the recommend maximum for absorption fields. Several alternative systems were considered for the disposal of the effluent. They included an elevated mound system, an evapotranspiration bed, a shallow absorption bed, and a bell- patt system. Preliminary consideration was given to an elevated mound system, however the slope of the lot and the percolation rate exceed recommended limitations for the use of this type of system An evapotranspiration bed relies primarily on liquid evaporation or transpiration by vegetation as a means of effluent disposal. These systems are generally more effective in sunny locations. The site is north facing, and is at high elevation so it will be snow covered for a good part of the year. During these months the system will rely on storage and percolation of the effluent. I discussed this with the Eagle County Sanitarian, Mr. Eric Edeen, and he informs me that a neighboring lot has an evapotranspiration bed which is operating successfully_ Mr. Don Seppi, the Sanitarian for Lake County in Leadville also reports that they have several systems installed in similar applications which are operating satisfactorily. A shallow absorption system would be similar to a conventional leach field. In this case it would require the use of approximately 500 lineal feet of a 10 inch diameter "gravel -less" leach bed tubing (SB-2 as manufactured by advanced drainage systems). This pipe would be buried with only 9 inches of cover and bedded in native soils. The field would be divided into halves and a dosing tank would be utilized to alternately send the effluent to each half. The pipe is flexible and could be contoured to meander through the trees. This system has been successfully used in this area, however, it is a relatively new concept and would be considered "experimental Monitoring for the next few years would be required to insure that it is operating satisfactorily. The Bell-Patt System utilizes two septic tanks installed in series. A pump installed in the final chamber is used to pressurize the absorption field. Approximately 500 lineal feet of G inch irrigation pipe would be used to construct the field. The pipe is flexible and can be contoured to avoid trees. This is a proprietary system and is accepted for use on the front range. The cost for installation on this site would be 6 to 8 thousand dollars. This system has never been installed at this elevation and as such would also be classified "Experimental." This report will present design recommendations for an evapotranspiration system. Additional design work will be required for the use of the experimental systems that have been described. Please contact this office for additional information. DESIGN CRITERIA A single family residence is planned for this site. The house will have three bedrooms, and automatic washer and a garbage disposal. The system will be designed in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Eagle County Regulations. The following criteria will be used: - Occupancy = 2 persons per bedroom Average Flow = 75 gallons per person per day (GPPD) Automatic Washer = 40% increase in flows Garbage Disposal = 20% increase in flows Peak Flow = 150% of average flow DESIGN CALCULATIONS Average Flow: Q= 2 persons x 3 bedrooms x 75 GPPD C Q= 450 gallons per day (GPD) Adjustment for washer and disposal Q= 450 GPD + (450 GPD x 40%)+(450 GPD x 20%) Q= 720 GPD - Peak Flow: Qp= 720 GPD x 150% QP= 1080 GPD Absorption Rate: Qa =5 Where: Q= flow in gallons per square foot per day. (GPD/ft 2) Qa= 0.40 GPD/Ft2 t= Percolation rate Evapotranspiration Rate: Qe= 35" Where Q= Flow (GPO/Ft2 237 Qe= 0.13 GPD/ft2 Combined Rate of Absorption: Qc= QE + Qa ]' Qc= 0.53 GPD/Ft2 7 Size Bed_ A=P = 1080 GPD Qc 0.53 GPD/ft2 A= 2100 ft 2 Use a 24'x 90' bed. From table 4 (section 4.07.01 of the Eagle County Regulations) a 1000 gallon septic tank will be required for this system. Since the field will rely on both.evapotranspiration and absorption a dosing tank will be used. The dosing chamber will allow for periodic high rate discharge to the drainage field instead of a slow trickle. This will prolong the life of the field. The dosing tankwill be sized for 3 cycles per day of the average flow. Q = 720 GPD ; 3 = 240 Gallons. SEPTIC SYSTEMS RECOMMENDATION Based on the proceeding calculations, it is recommended that a 1000 gallon compartmented septic tank followed by a 240 gallon dosing tank be installed. The effluent -should be disposed of in a 2100 square foot combined absorption and evapotranspiration bed_ Details of the proposed system are shown on the enclosed drawing. An inspection of the system should be made by a representative of the Eagle County Environmental Health Department prior to back filling. The installation and material specifications must comply with the Eagle County Individual 8 Sewage Disposal System Regulations. CONCLUSIONS This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Phil Todd for the specific application to the proposed single family home on Lot 31, Bellyache Ridge Subdivision Filing No. 2, Eagle County, Colorado. The findings and recommendations of this report have been obtained in accordance with accepted professional engineering practices. There is no other warranty either expressed or implied.
