This letter is being written to discuss the results of a perc test per-
formed on the above mentioned lot. I am also writing this letter to
identify the type of system(s) which can be constructed on site.
Site Conditions
The site conditions observed indicated two different stratums where a
field could be placed. These two stratums would have absorptions
fields which would vary greatly from each other depending upon which
strata was being constructed in. The site appears to be overlain with
six inches of topsoil over 3.5 feet of reddish brown clay soil over an
undetermined thickness of sandy gravels. No groundwater was
encountered at a depth of 11 feet. The perc holes that were dug in the
field had two perc holes modeling the percolation rate in the reddish
brown clay soil, and one perc hole modeling the percolation rate
between the reddish brown clay soil and the sandy gravels. The two
holes located in the reddish brown clay soils did not percolate at an
acceptable rate for installation of a standard type absorption system.
It is my opinion the type of system that would be installed in the
reddish brown soil would need to incorporate the assistance of
evapo-transpiration. This type of field would be very costly to the
homeowner. The other perc hole yielded percolation rates on the order
of 15 to 40 mpi. This type of system would require the construction of
a standard system. Based upon a four -bedroom home size, a 1250 gallon
septic tank would be required along with 2250 square foot bed size
(with the 40 mpi percolation rate). No perc tests were performed in
the sandy gravels, but it is my opinion that the sandy gravels would be
the most advantageous soils to locate the bottom of the absoprtion
field.
We are submitting with this letter the proposed bed construction that
would be located in the upper soils. However, we would like to reserve
the opportunity to perform an additional set of perc tests in the lower
sandy, gravelly soils to determine if these soils would yield a much
better location for the bottom of the absorption field. At that point
in time (once the new perc rates are determined), the field would be
redesigned, if necessary, to accommodate the new percolation rates.

Mr. Sid Fox

Construction Requirements
The construction requirements for the standard absorption bed are as
follows:
- Excavation of the bed shall be located approximatelay 42" to 48"
from the existing ground surface (the bottom of the absorption area
shall be excavated at a minimum of 24" into the natural soil at all
points).
- All smeared or compacted surfaces in the seepage bed shall be
scarified to the depth of the compaction and the loose material
removed.
- A 12" layer of 1/2 inch to 2-1/2 inches of screened rock shall be
disdistributed evenly over the entire bed, with distribution lines
set at a depth of at least 6" of gravel below, and 2" of gravel
above each line.
- The top of gravel shall be covered with a 10" layer of uncompacted
hay or straw, or a layer of Mirafi® 140N filter fabric, or equal.
- A final cover of soil suitable for vegetation (at least 10" deep)
shall be placed from the top of the hay or straw (or Mirafi®
fabric) to the finished surface grade of the seepage bed.
- The final cover shall be graded to deflect runoff water away from
the disposal area.
- Machine tamping, rolling or hydraulic compaction of final cover
shall not be permitted; however, hand -tamping may be allowed where
necessary to stabilize erosion or the intrusion of extraneous
water.
- The outermost disposal lines in the beds shall be placed no less
than 18", and no more tha 36" from the outside bed walls. For each
six feet or part thereof in bed width, there shall be one distribu-
tion line extending the length of the bed. Such pipeline shall be
spaced evenly between three feet and six feet apart so as to dis-
tribute the effluent evenly over the entire bed area.
- A distribution header shall be used to connect the perforated dis-
tribution lines within the field. The distribution header shall be
constructed of approved solid wall pipe.
- All distribution lines located in the field shall be level.
- Based upon a four -bedroom home size, the required septic tank size
will be 1250 gallons. The connecting pipe between the house and
the septic tank, and then again from the septic tank to the field,
shall be of 4" solid wall PVC pipe sloped at a minimum grade of
1/4" per foot.

The attached site plan identifies the setback requirements for the bed
location and field location with respect to the new house and property
lines. The setaback requirements shown are locating the field such
that other pertinent setback requirements are met (i.e., distances from
springs, wells, section lines, potable water supply lines, dwellings,
property lines, subsoil drains, lake, water courses, irrigation dit-
ches, dry gulches and cut banks or fill material).
The attached Sketch A identifies the bed cross section that has been
described in the narative above. I hope this letter serves its
intended purpose. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
call.

Dear Sid:

This letter is being written to discuss the results of a second perc
test performed on May 23, 1989, on the above mentioned lot. I am also
writing this letter to identify the type of system which will finally
be sized for this lot. In referring to my April 19, 1989, letter to
yourself regarding the same matter, I had identified a stratum of the
existing ground to be overlain with six inches of topsoil over 3.5 feet
of reddish brown clay soil over an undetermined thickness of sandy
gravels. Also, at that point in time, no groundwater was encountered
up to a depth of eleven feet. In that letter, I requested an option to
perform additional perc tests when the contractor arrived on site to
begin construction on the bed. The original perc test, as depicted in
the April 19th letter, identified two pert holes were located in the
reddish brown clay soil, and one perc test was located in a transition
zone between both the clay soil and the sandy gravels.
Based upon the site evaluation of May 23, 1989, two more perc holes
were located in the sandy gravels. '.these perc holes revealed perc
tests with rates averaging 35 min/inch. Based upon this data, the
original assumptions of percolation rates being nearly 40 min/inch were
verified. The bed construction identified in the .April 19th letter,
therefore, will be essentially the same with the exception that the
field will be sized for the 35 min/inch perc rate. With this perco-
lation rate, the field will be sized for 2000 square feet of absorption
area. The bottom of the bed will be located in the sandy gravels
(actually, the sandy gravels, as identified in the April 19th letter,
appeared to be intermixed with clay. The percolation rates which were
observed on May 23, 1989, were indicative of this. The percolation
rate in soils typically of this nature would require a sand filter). I
have enclosed a sketch of the final bed cross section to be used.
I hope this information serves its intended purpose.

RE: Barr I. Construction Certification
Dear Sid:
Per your request, this letter is being written to certify that the con-
struction of the Barr ISDS on 0022 Crown Drive in E1 Jebel has been
constructed per the plans and specifications as prepared by Schmueser
Gordon Meyer, Job 9074.
We inspected the construction at two different stages. The first stage
of construction inspected was the ISDS at the time of excavation. At
that time a percolation test was performed in the poorly -graded gravels
located at a depth of approximately four feet below existing grade.
The second stage of construction inspected was at the point prior to
backf ill . Again, it was apparent that the fill was installed per the
Schmueser Gordon Meyer specification and design guidelines.
I hope this information serves its intended purpose.
