Collins Phoenix Rock Springs Salt Lake City San Antonio Subject: Observation of Backhoe Pit Excavations and Percolation Testing, Lot 3, Parcel A, Aspen Mountain View, Oak Ridge I Subdivision, Eagle County, Colorado. Job No. 4 161 88 As requested, Chen & Associates, Inc. observed the backhoe pits at the subject site to evaluate the soils for foundation support, and performed percolation testing for septic leach field design. The work was performed as presented in our agreement for professional engineering services letter dated April 7, 1988 and subsequent verbal authorization to perform the percolation testing. The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation design and septic disposal system are presented in this report. Bui di g Foundation: At the time of our initial site visit on April 13, two pits had been excavated in the area of the proposed residence. The south- easterly pit (Pit 1) was 10 feet deep and the northwesterly pit (Pit 2) was 3 feet deep. The subsoiloprofile exposed in the pits consisted of about a 1-foot topsoil depth overlying silt and sand with gravel and cobbles with depth. The coarse material consists of basalt rock and the finer material is generally highly calcareous. In Pit 2 basalt rock apparently not diggable with the backhoe was encountered at the bottom of the pit. No free water was encountered in the pits and the soils were generally slightly moist. Logs of the subsoil profiles encountered at the pit locations are presented in Fig. 1. Laboratory testing performed on samples taken from the site are presented in Table I. We understand the residence is proposed to be two stories without a basement and be constructed of stone. The calcareous soils encountered below the topsoil are relatively hard and should be suitable for support of spread footings designed to impose a maximum bearing pressure of 2500 psf. Footings should have a minimum width of 18 inches for load bearing walls and 2 feet for columns. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced. top and bottom to span an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. It appears the foundation will bear partly on basalt rock and partly on soil and there may be a poten- tial for post construction differential settlement, possibly due to wetting of the bearing soils. Perimeter backfill should be well compacted and have a Peter Wescott and Kate Friesen April 25, 1988 Page 2 surface slope that drains away from the building a distance of at least 10 feet. A representative of the soil engineer should observe the building excavation to verify the foundation bearing conditions. Percolation Tests: Percolation tests were performed in six hand dug pits excavated and soaked before our arrival. Percolation Holes P1, P2 and P3 were located between 20 and 80 feet southwest of Pit 1 and Percolation Holes P4, P5 and P6 were located about 75 feet further southeast. The soils exposed in the pits to the excavated depths between 29 and 31 inches were similar to those encountered in the backhoe pits. The percolation testing of P1 and P2 was performed on April 13 and percolation testing of P3 through P6 was per- formed on April 18. The results of the percolation tests are presented in Table II. The percolation tests indicate a variable rate between 30 and 120 minutes per inch. Based on the percolation rates and soils observed, an infiltration septic system appears feasible provided there is adequate soil depth. Due to the variable and slow percolation rates, we recommend the system be oversized. If the. southeasterly percolation area is selected, a profile pit should be excavated to verify adequate depth soil below the leach field. If you have any questions regarding the findings of our work or if we can be of further assistance on the project, please let us know. <'•;° ' • Act • 1 C•222 xY ••Ti?Z..J .° rQ SLP/ec Attachments Very truly yours, CHEN & ASSOCIATES, INC. Box 219 Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81602 (303) 945-7755 Denver Direct Line: 893-1608 Pursuant to the Eagle County requirements and in accordance with the Individual Sewage Disposal Systems Criteria the following design is presented for your review and approval. The design is for a septic tank and absorption trench system for Lot 3, Aspen Mountain View, Oak Ridge I subdivision. The owners are Peter Westcott and Kathleen Friesen. The lot is 2.50 acres in size and is sloped at about 15% upward from Mountain View Road. The proposed home is a 3 bedroom single family residence. Peak day sewage effluent flow is calculated to be 675 gallons based on 75 gpd/person, 2 persons per bedroom, and a 1.5 peak day multiplier. The septic tank shall be a prefabricated concrete or fiberglass tank with a minimum liquid capacity of 1000 gallons which meets the requirements of section 4.07.010. The tank shall be installed in accordance with the requirements set forth in Section 4.07.03. The enclosed letter report from Chen and Associates, dated April 25, 1988, presents the results of soils investigations and percolation tests. Six perc tests were conducted and the rate of percolation varied from 30 minutes/inch to 120 minutes/inch. For design purposes we used a percola- tion rate of 45 minutes. Table 5 in Section 4.08.01 indicates a minimum absorption trench area of 300 sq. ft. per bedroom, or 900 sq. ft. for this perc rate. Because of the variable percolation rates the amount of absorp- tion trench area was increased by 33 percent to 1200 sq. ft. A 10 foot deep test pit was dug near percolation holes P-1, P-2 and P-3. The pit did not encounter bedrock or groundwater. The absorption trench system shall consist of four trenches each 100 feet long, 3 feet wide and 8 feet apart measured center to center. The trenches shall be level and follow the contour of the existing ground. A drop box Sid ,Fox May 18, 1988 Page Two distribution network will be installed to distribute the septic tank effluent equally to each trench. All materials and workmanship shall be in accordance with Section 4.08.02. The disposal lines shall be 4 inch diameter perforated PVC pipe surrounded by clean graded gravel or rock varying in size from 1/2 inch to 2-1/2 inch. The lot layout is shown on sheet 1 of 3 with minimum clearance distances to lot lines and water lines. The trench and distribution system is shown on sheet 2 of 3 and the trench cross-section is shown on sheet 3 of 3. Please call if you have any questions.
