C
SCOPE
This report presents the results of percolation tests
and provides septic system recommendations for the proposed
"Trapper's Cabin" at Beaver Creek, Eagle County, Colorado.
SITE INVESTIGATION
The site was investigated on August 12, 1987, and three
percolation test holes were dug to a minimum depth of 30 inches.
Holes were presoaked and percolation tests performed on
August 13, 1987. Results of these tests are included in
this report; see PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS. Also, a test pit
was excavated to a depth of 7.5 feet on August 14, 1987, with
a conventional backhoe. An investigation of the test pit was
performed on August 17, 1987. A summary of the test pit log
is also a part of this report; see Figure No. 1. Locations
of the percolation test holes and the test pit are shown on
Drawing No. 1.
SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION
The site is located in a part of the East one-half of the
Northwest one -quarter, Section 23, Township 5 South, Range 82
West of the Sixth Principal Meridian, Eagle County, Colorado,
and is more particularly described on Drawing No. 2 of this
report.
2
SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION - continued
The site is generally sloping to the southeast, and
was covered with mature aspen trees. The cabin site has
been cleared of trees, and a view corridor approximately
30 feet wide has been clear-cut to the southeast.
SUBSURFACE AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS
Subsurface conditions in the proposed leach field area
are uniform, and consist of sand and gravel over weathered
bedrock. Refer to Figure No. 1 for additional information.
PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS
A total of three percolation tests were performed on
the site as specified by the Eagle County Individual Sewage
Disposal System Regulations. Results were as follows:
Test Hole Min/1" Drop Date of Test Ambient Air Temp.
1 9.2 8/13/87 65
2 7.5 8/13/87 65
3 8/6 8/13/87 65
Average time for 1 inch drop = 8.43 minutes
DESIGN CRITERIA
A log cabin has been proposed for this site for year-round
use. The cabin will have a total of five (5) bedrooms, and
3
DESIGN CRITERIA - continued
will not be equipped with a garbage disposer or automatic
washing machine. Thus design criteria for calculations are:
2 persons/bedroom
75 gallons/person/day - average flow
Maximum flow: 150% of average flow
CALCULATIONS
A = QY where A = minimum absorption area (sq.ft.)
Q = maximum quantity of sewage flow (gal/day)
T = percolation rate (min/inch)
Q= 5 x 2 x 75 x 1.5 = 1,125 gal/day
A = 11258.43 r= 653.3 square feet
From Table 5 (Section 8.1 of the Eagle County Regulations),
minimum absorption area for seepage beds is 215 square feet/
bedroom; therefore, 5 x 215 = 1,075 square feet of seepage bed
required.
From Table 4 (Section 7.1.a of the Eagle County Regulations),
a 1500 gallon septic tank is required.
SEPTIC SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the preceding calculations, it is recommended
to install a 1500 gallon compartmented septic tank followed
by a minimum 1075 square foot seepage bed. The seepage bed
should lie a minimum of 10 feet from all property lines, 30 feet
from the proposed cabin, and 100 feet from the existing well.
4
SEPTIC SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS - continued
An inspection of the system should be made by a representative
of the Eagle County Environmental Health Department prior to
backfilling. The installation and material specifications
must comply with the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal
System Regulations.
As an alternate to the standard 1,075 square foot seepage
bed, 360 lineal feet of 10-inch diameter "gravel -less" leach
bed tubing (as manufactured by American Drainage Systems, Inc.)
could be embedded in the native soils of the site. Due to the
remoteness of the site, this alternate would probably be
cost effective.
It is also recommended as options to either of the pre-
ceding alternates to add a dosing chamber to the septic tank
and an alternating valve to the seepage bed. The dosing chamber
would allow for periodic high rate discharge to fill the
drainage field instead of a slow trickle into the field. This
would prolong the life of the drainage field. The alternating
valve can also prolong the effective life of the drainage
field by allowing an alternating flow of effluent to two
separate halves of the drainage field. This allows the unused
portion of the drainage field to rest and regenerate its opti-
mum characteristics.
5
CONCLUSIONS
This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of
Ewing Trucking and Construction Company, for the specific
application to the proposed "Trapper's Cabin" site at Beaver
Creek, Eagle County, Colorado.
The findings and recommendations of this report have been
obtained in accordance with accepted professional engineering
practices. There is no other warranty, either expressed or
implied.
If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate
to call.
Sincerely,
INTER -MOUNTAIN ENGINEERING, LTD.

Dear, Mr. Funk
An inspection of the individual sewage disposal system for the
"Trappers Cabin" on December 2, 1987 revealed that only half of
the required Sb2 drainage pipe was installed.
Ewing Trucking and Construction Company indicated that would
like to install the rest of the drain field next spring. The
system is equipped with a diversion valve that should be
changed once each year, in the summer months. Since the
diversion valve would not need to be changed until next summer,
it will be appropriate to install the remaining Sb2 drainage
pipe at that time.
The system should function as installed this winter, however
the remaining Sb2 pipe and connection to the other side of the
diversion valve should be completed by July 1, 1988. A final
inspection and approval will be granted at that time, if the
system is installed according to the Inter -Mountain Engineering
specifications.
Please note the Engineer specified 360' of 10" Sb2 pipe, only
two 90' lengths of pipe were installed
