Re: Subsurface Soils Investigation
Proposed Addition at Lot 66
Bellyache Ridge Subdivision
Wolcott, Colorado
Sir:
a
We have completed the Subsurface.Soils Investigation for
the above project. Two soil borings were drilled at the
site. Samples obtained thereby were tested and.evaluated in
the lab, along with other pertinent information, so that we
could make recommendations with regard to foundation design
and construction.. This letter reports the observations and
recommendations made by Lincoln-DeVore with regard to a
one- and two-story, wood -frame, split log paneled addition
containing a garage, health and activities related rooms
and storage spaces.
Soil Classification: The site soils consist of 312- to 7 feet
of colluvium derived from the Entrada, Morrison and Chinle
Formations. As most of these formations are of claystone
and very fine sandstone, the colluvium classifies principally
as a silty clay (CL). Details are shown on the attached
summary sheet for Soil Type No. 1.
The colluvium is underlain by claystone and sandstone
(Soil Type Nos. 2 and 3) of the Entrada and Morrison For-
mations. (Detailed summary sheets also attached.) Weathered
in the upper several feet, these formational materials are
generally intact, dense and mildly expansive. It is recom-
mended that the foundations bear on formational material at
a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 4000 psf. In order
to resist the potential swell of the most likely bearing
material (Soil Type No. 2) a minimum contact pressure of 850
psf will be required.

Prop. Addition at Lot 66
Bellyache Ridge Subdivision

Page - 2 -
Man -Made Fill: Soils appear to be native to the site.
Moisture Conditions at Time of Inspection: The colluvial soils
had a moisture content of 19.8 percent. The formational bed-
rock had generally lower moisture contents varying from 2.9
to 15.3 percent. These may be described as low to moderate
moisture levels.
Foundation Type Recommended: The no footing foundation system
with the stem wall resting directly on the soil is recommended.
Voids will be requires. This addition is located on a relatively
gentle to moderate slope, with a change in elevation from the
far end to the existing building of 3 to 5 feet. No major cuts.
are anticipated and some fill placement near.the existing house
appears likely. No major lateral loads due, to high cuts and
fills are expected.
Reinforcing: Reinforcing should consist of five ##5 rebars,
three of'them near the top, placed continuously around the build-
ing without any gaps or breaks. Additional ##5 rebars should be
placed at 45Q at any steps in the foundation wall,'and.all
reinforcing should have a minimum lap of 15 inches.
Floor s,labson grade should be positively separated from all
structural portions of the building and allowed to 4loat freely.
Non -bearing partitions resting on slabs on grade should be con-
structed with a void space, at the bottom preferably, to allow
for freedom of movement without affecting the roof or floor
above. Bearing partitions should have their own foundations.
For multi -level structure, stairway between floors should not
be constructed as a rigid connection, but should allow for
vertical movement in the floor slab.
Drainage and Grading: Surface grading should be constructed
in such a manner that all runoff moisture is removed from the
vicinity of the structure as quickly as possible. Roof drains,
if any, should.be carried across backfilled areas and allowed
to discharge well away from the building. Water should not be
allowed to pond in areas of backfill. It is recommended that
a peripheral drain be constructed around the living area of
this structure.

Page - 3 -
To aid in keeping water from reaching beneath the building, all
backfill around the building and in utility trenches leading to
the building, should be mechanically compacted to 90% of the
maximum Proctor density, ASTM D-698. All fill should be com-
posed of the native soils and no fill should be soaked, jetted
or ponded.
Cement Type: Type II Cement should be used in contact with the
ground.
Remarks: The open excavation must be inspected prior to the
t?7 ac+rmF+nt of concrete to es a ish that materla s o e proper
design bearing capacity have been encountered and that no soft
spots or debris are present in the foundation area.
The design and construction of foundation should anticipate some
differential movement of the addition relative to the existing.
building that has had some years to stabilize. Where possible,
free "floating" connections should be made to allow for move-
ment without major stress damage. Probably movement for foun-
dations on formational bedrock should be very slight. Care
should be taken to avoid undermining or overloading existing
foundations.
If questions. arise or further information is required, please
do not hesitate to contact Lincoln-DeVore at any time.

INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM INSPE,,,,,,,
Located on Lot 66 - Filing #2 - Bellyache Ridge
Dear Ms. Hahn:
All water and sewage disposal system loan inspections are done under
the authority of the Eagle County Building Regulations, Section 10,
sub -paragraph 3-A, adopted by the Eagle County Commissioners, Sep-
tember 20, 1982.
An on -site inspection on'Wednesday, January 18, 1984 of the above
referenced property revealed that major repair work had recently been
finsihed on the Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) serving the
older portion of the home. According to Eagle County's ISDS regulations,
all major repair work requires a permit. The repair work was initiated
without the required County permit although an application has been applied
for by the contractor, Mr. Donald Davis. This office cannot confirm that
the repair work was accomplished in accordance with the appropriate stan-
dards and regulations since an inspection was not done prior to covering
the system (although Mr. Davis is a licensed installer (No.016-83) in
Eagle County and is knowledgeable of such installations). A $150.00
ISDS repair permit fee is required prior to issuance of a permit for the
above described repairs (f nvoice attached).
There is a separate individual sewage disposal system serving the newer
portion/addition to the residence. This system appears to be functioning
properly. This system was approved in October of 1981 and Permit No. 533
was issued, in accordance with applicable County regulations governing such
installations. This department recommends that the septic tank be -pumped
every four years.
Potable water is supplied by the community water supply (Bellyache Ridge).
This water supply is inspected annually and tested by the Colorado Depart-
ment of Health on a routine basis.
If you have any further questions concerning this matter, please contact
our office.
Sincerely,
3
