The proposed residence can be founded with spread
footings placed on the upper natural soils designed
for a maximum bearing pressure of 2500 psf with design
details and precautions as discussed in the report.
SCOPE
This report presents the results of a soil and foundation investi-
gation for the proposed residence to be located on Parcel 5, Otto Creek
Subdivision, Eagle County, Colorado. The general site and subsoil
conditions, recommendations, for foundation design, percolation test
results together with other soil -related design and construction details
are discussed in the report.
SITE CONDITIONS
The site is located within the western portion of the subdivision
along County Road P-104 about 6 miles east of Basalt. The designated
building area slopes down generally towards the southwest with approximately
8 feet of elevation differential across the building site and about 25
feet across the develoFn-ent area. Further to the north, the ground
surface rises to a mesa type area and further to the south drops down
steeply. Vegetative cover consists predominantly of native grass within
the development area.
SUBSOIL CONDITIONS
The subsoil conditions were investigated by drilling two exploratory
holes within the designated building area at the approximately locations
shown on Figure 1. Graphic logs of the subsoil profile encountered at
the test holes are shown on Figure 2. In general, the subsurface profile
is relatively uniform and consists of about 5 to 6 feet of very stiff

clays overlying clayey sand, gravel and cobbles with possible boulders.
Results of a consolidation test, presented on Figure 4, indicate
the upper clay to be only slightly compressible under natural low moisture
condition and moderately compressible when loaded and wetted. Gradation
analysis performed on the minus 3/4 inch material of the underlying
granular deposit is shown on Figure 5.
No free water was encountered in the test holes at time of drilling
or when checked 5 days later.

We understand the structure will be single -story and excavated into
the hillside. The back wall will be totally buried. Considering the
subsoil conditions encountered in the exploratory holes, we recommend
the use of spread footings placed on the upper natural soils for support
of the structure. The following design and construction details should
be observed:
(1) Footings should be placed on the upper natural soils below all
topsoil and any disturbed soils and designed for a maximum bearing
pressure of 2500 psf. Under this pressure and existing low moisture
conditions, settlements should be relatively minor and essentially
during construction. Some additional differential movement on the
order of 1 inch maximum is indicated if the subsoils were to
become wet.
(2) Minimum footing width should be taken as 16 inches for walls and
2 feet for columns.
(3) Continuous foundation walls should be adequately reinforced to
span an unsupported length of at least 10 feet. Basement walls
acting as retaining structures should also be designed to resist an

equivalent lateral earth pressure of 45 psf per foot of depth. This
pressure is for a well con-pacted granular backfill having a surface
slope graded away from the structure for a distance of about 10
feet. Any surcharge loading such as from soil cover above the
wall or sloping backfill should also be included in the total
lateral pressure.
(4) All topsoil and any local soft pockets of soil found at the
base of the footing excavations should be removed and the excavation
extended to the lower firm soils. A representative of the soils
engineer should observe the foundation excavation to verify suitable
bearing conditions.
(5) Footings should be placed below frost depth.
The upper natural soils other than topsoil are suitable to support
slab -on -grade construction. Any required backfill should consist of
non -expansive granular soils compacted to at least 900 of standard
Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. The on -site clays
should be suitable for use in shallow (2 foot maxim n) fill areas.
To reduce the effects of some differential movement, non-structural
floor slabs should be separated fr(xn bearing members with a positive
expansion joint and adequately reinforced. A minimum 4 inch layer of
free draining gravel should be provided immediately beneath the floor
slab to provide a uniform surface for concrete placement and act as a
drainage layer.
PERCOLATION RESULTS
Percolation testing for sizing of an individual septic system
` _4-
infiltration bed was performed within the designated location. The
profile hole drilled at this location indicated about 1 1/2 feet of
topsoil and clay overlying the clayey sand, gravel, cobble and boulder
deposit. No free water was encountered to the maximum depth drilled, 9
feet. Results of percolation tests, presented in Table II, indicate
infiltration rates between 20 to 40 minutes per inch. Considering the
subsurface profile and percolation rates, we believe the site is suitable
for installation of a conventional infiltration bed system.

Although no free water was encountered in the exploratory holes
at time of investigation, it has been our experience in areas such as
this that localized seeps or perched water can develop at times of seasonal
runoff. Therefore, we reccnTnend an underdrain system be provided to
protect the lower level against wetting. This drain can also function
as the perimeter wall backfill drain. The drain should consist of a
perforated pipe installed in a gravel filled trench placed at least
12 inches below floor slab level and sloped on a minimum to grade to
suitable gravity outlet. The gravel beneath the floor slab should
connect into the underdrain system.
SURFACE DRAINAGE
The following drainage precautions should be observed during
construction and maintained at all times after the building has been
oc pleted:
(1) Excessive wetting or drying of the foundation excavation should
be avoided during construction.
(2) Backfill around the building should be moistened and compacted
to at least 900 of standard Proctor density.
(3) The ground surface surrounding the exterior of the building should
be sloped to drain away frcan the building in all directions.
(4) Roof downspouts and drains should discharge well beyond the limits
of all backfill.

This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted
soil and foundation engineering practices in this area for the use by
the client for design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations
submitted in this report are based upon the data obtained from the test
holes drilled at the locations indicated on the test hole plan. The
nature and extent of variations between the test holes may not become
evident until excavation is performed. If, during construction, soil
and ground water conditions appear to be different from those described
herein, this office should be advised at once so that re-evalustion of
the recommendations may be made. We reccnynend on -site observation of
excavations and foundation bearing strata by a soil engineer.
