Box 771865 Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 Job Number 01-4799 Subject: On -Site Sewage Disposal System Design, Proposed Campbell Residence, Lot 8, Filing 1, Bellyache Ridge Subdivision, Eagle County, Colorado. Gentlemen: RECEIVED APR 1 1 2001 EAGLE COUNTY This report presents the results of an On -Site Sewage Disposal System (OSDS) design for the proposed Campbell Residence to be constructed within Lot 8 in Filing 1 of the Bellyache Ridge Subdivision in Eagle County, Colorado. Proposed Construction: We understand that the residence will be constructed with six bedrooms when completed. The residence will also have a clothes washer and garbage disposal. Site Conditions: The project site is situated north of Bellyache Ridge Road in Filing 1 of the Bellyache Ridge Subdivision in Eagle County, Colorado. The OSDS site will be located northwest of the proposed residence. The vegetation at the site of the OSDS consisted of natural grasses, weeds, sage brush, deciduous brush and aspen trees. The topography at the site is variable and the area of the proposed OSDS site generally slopes strongly down to the west on the order of 15 to 20 percent. Subsurface Conditions: To investigate the subsurface conditions at the site, two profile pits were excavated near the proposed OSDS, on April 4, 2001. The subsurface conditions encountered in the profile pits generally consisted of approximately 24 to 36 inches of topsoil overlying natural clays, natural gravels and limestone bedrock. The profile pit excavated near the weaf the proposed OSDS consisted of 36 inches of topsoil overlying natural clays to a depth of 7 feet and limestone bedrock to a depth of 7'/2 feet. T`he'second profile pit, excavated approximately 150 feet to the east, consisted of 24 inches of topsoil overlying natural gravels and cobbles, to a depth of 5 feet and limestone bedrock to a depth of 5'/2 feet. Practical rig refusal was encountered at depths of 7'/z and 5'/2 feet with a trackhoe. Free groundwater was not encountered in either of the profile pits at the time of excavating. (970) 879-7888 • Fax (970) 879-7891 2063 Snow Bowl Plaza, P.O. Box 775226 • Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 A set of 5 percolation test holes ranging from 12 to 32 inches in depth were advanced near the proposed OSDS on April 4, 2001 and tests were conducted by our office to determine the percolation rate of the natural soils. The percolation tests indicate that the upper 32 inches of natural topsoil in this portion of the site exhibited percolation rates from 16 to 40 minutes per inch with an average percolation rate of 26 minutes per inch. System Design: Based on the percolation test results of the natural topsoil, we have designed a modified trench absorption system utilizing Standard or EQ36 Infiltrator chambers placed in the upper 12 inches of topsoil. The OSDS design presented below is based on the total anticipated number of bedrooms and appurtenances for the structure, as well as the Long Term Acceptance Rate (LTAR), based on the average percolation rate for the natural topsoil materials. Considering the anticipated construction, we have calculated a peak effluent flow of 1,350 gallons per day (gpd) for the system. Based on the percolation results and EPA Guidelines, a LTAR of 0.6 gallon/square foot/day was used in the design. This results in a minimum absorption area of 2,250 square feet for conventional trench or bed absorption systems. Increasing the area an additional 15 percent, for a clothes washer and a garbage disposal, a minimum required absorption area of 2,587.5 square feet was calculated and used in the design. Using a 50% reduction in the required absorption area with Standard Infiltrator chambers, we have calculated that the system can be constructed using eighty-four (84) Standard Infiltrator chambers. As an alternate, we have calculated that the system can be constructed using eighty-one (81) EQ36 Infiltrator chambers. We recommend that the trenches for the chambers be placed a maximum of 12 inches below the natural ground surface. A minimum of 18 inches of soil cover should be placed over the chambers in accordance with the chamber manufacturer's recommendations. A septic tank with a minimum capacity of 1,750 gallons is also required for the residence. However, we recommend that a 2,000 gallon concrete tank or 2-1,000 gallon concrete tanks placed in series be used for the residence. The system design is presented in Figures #1 and #2. The design calculations are shown in Appendix A and the specifications for the system are given in Appendix B. If the system is not activated within 30 days of installation, we recommend that the Infiltrator chambers be periodically flooded with water to prevent rodents from nesting and burrowing in the chambers, which could result in premature failure of the system. We also recommend that the system be fenced off to livestock. Limitations: The procedures and design criteria used in this'design was obtained from the EPA "Design Manual - On -site Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems", 1980, the Colorado Department of Health "Guidelines for Individual Sewage Disposal Systems" (rev. Sept. 1997) and the Eagle County "Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations". The sewage disposal system design presented is based on currently accepted design procedures and the existing features and usage of the facilities. If the usage of the current facilities or addition of new facilities to those currently in use in the building changes, the OSDS design will also most likely change. It should also be noted that all on -site sewage disposal systems require periodic Job No. 0 1 -4799 Northwest Colorado Consultants, Inc. Page 2 maintenance. The failure of the owner to provide proper periodic inspection and maintenance of the system, such as the pumping of the septic tank every 3 to 7 years, can lead to premature failure of the system. If you have any questions concerning this report or our recommendations, or if we may be of further service, please contact this office. Please be advised that Colorado law requires that a permit must be obtained prior to the construction, alteration, or use of an on -site sewage disposal system. Box 771865 Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 Job Number 01-4799 Subject: Alternate On -Site Sewage Disposal System Design, Proposed Campbell Residence, Lot 8, Filing 1, Bellyache Ridge Subdivision, Eagle County, Colorado. Gentlemen: This letter presents our recommendations for an alternate On -Site Sewage Disposal System (OSDS) for the proposed Campbell Residence to be constructed within Lot 8 in Filing 1 of the Bellyache Ridge Subdivision in Eagle County, Colorado. We previously designed an OSDS for this site under this job number and dated April 6, 2001. The system was permitted by Eagle County with the Permit #2079-01, As requested by Paul Zywicki of Miller Excavating, we visited the project site to discuss the layout of the proposed OSDS. Based on conversations with Paul Zywicki, the highly variable topography of the site, dense vegetation and site constraints it was determined that the construction of a serial distribution system with eighty-one (81) EQ 36 Infiltrator chambers would not be feasible. It appeared that the chambers would have to be placed from 3 inches to 3 to 4 feet below the existing ground surface. It is our recommendation that the system be constructed as a lateral distribution system with a concrete distribution box set level for equal distribution. The system should be constructed in the same configuration as our original design with the exception of the distribution box. We also recommend that the distribution box be placed on a concrete pad placed on the natural clays or on washed rock fill materials placed over the natural clays. The bottom of the concrete pad or washed rock should be placed below the frost depth after the final grading is completed. We also recommend the use of flow levelers in the distribution box to ensure equal flow to each of the distribution lines and ease of re -leveling if the settlement of the distribution box occurs. We also recommend that as a part of a regular maintenance program, the distribution box be exposed and inspected yearly for settlement and equal flow. In addition, the Infiltrator chambers should be placed in the upper 12 inches of natural topsoil. Due to the variable topography, the chambers at the end of runs may be above the existing ground surface. We recommend that when the Infiltrator runs are less than 2 inches below the existing ground surface that an (970) 879.7888 - Fax (970) 879-7891 - 2580 Copper Ridge Drive, P.O. Box 771865 Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 Job Number: 01-4799 Subject: On -Site Sewage Disposal System Observations, Campbell Residence, Lot 8, Filing 1, Bellyache Ridge Subdivision, Eagle County, Colorado. Gentlemen: As requested, NWCC, Inc. (Northwest Colorado Consultants, Inc.) visited the project site on September 12, 2001 to observe the On -site Sewage Disposal System (OSDS) being constructed for the Campbell Residence located within Lot 8 in Filing 1 of the Bellyache Ridge Subdivision in Eagle County, Colorado. Our firm previously designed the OSDS for the residence under this job number and dated April 6, 2001. In addition, we also prepared a letter outlining our recommendations for an alternate OSDS dated August 20, 2001. The system design incorporates Infiltrator chambers placed in the upper 12 inches of topsoil. At the time of our visit, the contractor, Miller Excavating had installed a 2,000-gallon concrete septic tank to the north of the residence, currently under construction. The contractor had also completed the inlet connection to the septic tank and piping from the residence to the septic tank. The inlet connection had been properly made to the tank with 4-inch diameter solid PVC pipe (ASTM 3034 SDR 35) and the piping from the residence to the septic tank appeared to meet the minimum grade requirements. The contractor had not constructed the outlet connection to the septic tank or the piping from the septic tank to the distribution box at the time of our visit. Based on conversations with Paul Zywicki of Miller Excavating and Bill Carlson of Eagle County Environmental Health Division, it is our understanding that they observed and inspected the outlet connection and piping from the septic tank to the distribution box. The contractor had installed a concrete distribution box, which was set level, and had placed 6 runs of 12 and 1 run of 9 EQ36 Infiltrator chambers for a total of 81 EQ36 Infiltrator chambers. It appeared that the Infiltrator chambers were placed a maximum of 12 inches below the existing ground surface. Due to the highly variable topography, approximately 5 to 10 of the chambers were placed 18 inches below the natural ground surface. We advised the contractor that these chambers would be acceptable at this depth. Also due to the topography, the chambers in each of the runs were constructed with an end plate and the next chamber placed at a lower elevation to avoid fill placement across the site. The piping from the distribution box to the Infiltrator runs had also been installed and the piping appeared to meet the minimum grade (970) 879.7888 • Fax (970) 879.7891 2580 Copper Ridge Drive • P.O. Box 775226 • Steamboat Springs, CO 80477 requirements. Each of the outlet pipes from the distribution box was constructed with a flow leveler to ensure equal flow to each of the Infiltrator runs. The contractor had also placed the inspection pipes at the end of each of the Infiltrator runs at the time of our inspection. We advised the contractor that they should backfill the system in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. We also advised them that a minimum of 18 inches of soil cover should be placed over the tops and sides of the chambers and a minimum of 24 inches of soil cover over the distribution lines. If sufficient amounts of fill are not placed over the chambers, seepage may occur during high usage periods. An as -built drawing taken from field measurements of the system is presented in Figure #1. Based on our part time observations, it appears that the portions of the system, which were completed at the time of our site visit had been constructed in general accordance with the design previously completed by our firm with the noted exceptions. We believe that the system should function properly with proper care and maintenance. As part of the regular maintenance and inspection program the distribution box should be uncovered periodically and the flow levelers in each of the outlet pipes be checked and adjusted for equal flow. As stated in the design report, if the system is not activated within 30 days, we recommend periodic flooding of the Infiltrator chambers to prevent rodents from burrowing or nesting within the chambers. If you have any ftestions regarding this letter, our observations or recommendations or if we may be of further service, p se contact this office. Sincerely, NORTHWE6%QI O CONSULTANTS, INC., P.
