What is the minimum distance be the absorption trenches and his water well? E -3- Mae field exploration for the project was conducted on July 26, 1991. 'Three exploratory borings were drilled at the locations shown on Fig. 1 to evaluate the subsurface conditions. Borings 1 and 2 were drilled in the proposed building area and Boring 3 was drilled in the proposed leach field area.` --,The borings were advanced with 4-inch diameter continuous flight augers powered by a truck mounted CME-55 drill rig. The borings were logged by a representative of Chen -Northern, Inc - samples of the subsoils were taken with 1 3/8-inch and 2-inch I.D. spoon samplers. nie samplers were driven into the subsoils at various depths with blows from a 140-pound hmmler falling 30 inches. This test is similar to the standard penetration test described by ASIM Method D-1586. The penetration resistance values are an indication of the relative density or consistency of the subsoils. Depths at which the samples were taken and the penetration resistance values are shown on the 7Dgs of Exploratory Borings, Fig. 2. The samples were returned to our laboratory for review by the project engineer and testing.. The subsoil conditions encountered at the site are shown graphically on Fig. 2. The subsoils consist of about 1 foot of topsoil overlying medium dense, silty sands -arid sandy silts in Borings 1 and 3 and dense silty sandy gravels with cobbles in Boring 2. At a depth of 7 1/2 feet in Boring 1, the dense silty sandy gravels were encountered. L. .-Tnri i1PY11 Tnr Consulting Engineers and Scientists 4 4 4 y 4 4 4 -4- Iaboratory testing performed on samples obtained from the borings included natural .moist-ure content and gradation analyses. Results of consolidation testing performed on relatively undisturbed drive samples of the silty sand subsoils, presented on Fig. 4, indicate a moderate collapse potential when wetted and higher compressibility under additional loading. Results of gradation analyses performed on small diameter drive samples (minus 1 1/2-inch fraction) of the natural sandy gravel soils are shown on Fig. 5. The laboratory testing is summarized in Table I. The silty sand and sandy silt subsoils encountered in Boring 3 appear to be suitable for leach field construction. Percolation tests should be conducted in the leach field area to determine infiltration rates required for leach field design. No free water was encountered in the borings at the time of drilling and the subsoils were slightly moist to moist. FOLUM=ON ON3 Foundation excavations on the uphill (north) side of the residence, in the vicinity of Boring 2, will probably penetrate the dense sandy gravel subsoils. However, shallow excavations on the downhill (south) side of the residence, near Boring 1, will likely expose the silty sands that possess a settlement potential. considering the subsoil conditions encountered in the exploratory borings and the nature of the proposed construction, we reccQnd the building be founded with spread footings bearing on the natural sandy gravel soils below the upper oaopressible silty sand soils and topsoil. The design and construction criteria presented below should be observed for a spread footing foundation system. The construction criteria should be considered when preparing project documents.
