Box 730 Minturn, CO 81645 RE: Septic System Design, Gies Residence Dear Mr. Gies: Per your request, a percolcation test and septic system sizing calculations were performed for an Individual Sewage Disposal System permit application for Lot 12, Bellyache Ridge Subdivision, Filing 2, Eagle County, Colorado. Two profile pits were excavated in the proposed area of the absorption trenches, extending to a depth of 4 feet each. Soils encountered in the pits consisted of: 2 inches top soil followed by a sandy silt with cobble - sized rock fragments to the extent of the pits. In both pits, bedrock was encountered at 4 feet. On July 17, 1995, three percolation tests were performed at the proposed absorption trench location. Test holes were hand -dug to a depth of 1.5 to 2 feet; the holes could not be advanced farther due to large rock fragments. Soils encountered included 2 inches of topsoil followed by a sandy silt with cobble -sized rock fragments to the extent of the holes. Neither groundwater nor indication of a seasonal high water table was encountered in any of the holes or test pits. The average percolation rate of the three test was 11 minutes per inch (MPI). Two of the tests indicated sufficient percolation rates (5-60 MPI) for an absorption system; one of the tests indicated a rate faster than 5 MPI. The proposed location of the-ttbs6ption ftTnrhei-4 topographically above the house. Alpine Engineering recommends a lift station to bring effluent from the septic tank up to the absorption trenches. Since bedrock appears to be approximately 4 feet below ground surface in the proposed area of the infiltration trenches, Alpine Engineering recommends the construction'of a mound system in order to situate. the bottom of the infiltrators at least 4 feet above bedrock. Tops of infiltrators should be covered with 12" to 18" of fill and revegetated with appropriate seed mix. Observation ports should be provided per Eagle County regulations. The drip grid is to be used only with the Whitewater Aerobic Treatment Plant in stalled as per manufacturer's installation instructions, and only with a Summit Sewer Systems, Inc. representative present. Sincerely, ALPINE ENGINEERING, INC. Linn Schorr Environmental Engineer Enclosure pO RECl ;, V 2M3 t N. _ NAL E particularly if applied in "pulses" or short doses several times per day near the soil surface where the soil dries the quickest, this would keep the soil absorption rate at the highest value and minimize the potential of water surfacing on poor soil conditions. As stated previously, this design criteria will under -load the system at all times except when the soil is at or near saturation from rainfall. If designing for an efficient irrigation system, the water supply may not be sufficient to meet the demands of a lawn or landscaped area during peak water demand months. This problem can be overcome by either of two solutions: add additional fresh -water make-up to the system during the growing season to supply the needed water for plants in question; or split the system into two or more fields with necessary valves and only use one of the fields during the peak water demand months and alternate the fields during winter months or extremely wet periods Table 2 shows the recommended hydraulic loading rates for various soil conditions, using a safety factor of 12 with regard to the equilibrium saturated hydraulic conductivity rate of the soil. These loading rates assumes a treated, disinfected effluent with BOD and TSS values of less than 20 mg/1 is produced in the pre treatment system. Table 1. The quality and homogeneity of the soil may present a problem. If the soil was not properly prepared and there are pieces of construction debris, rocks and non- uniform soils, it is very difficult to obtain a uniform water spread. In all cases, but particularly if the soil is compacted, soil properties can be greatly improved by ripping and disking, sifting the coarser material and laying it down first. The ideal soil is 12" to 18" deep, uniform, has an equal amount of fine sand, loam and clay, and is on top of a deep layer of pea gravel and coarse sand that provides drainage. Box 730 Minturn, Colorado 81645 Fax 970 945-8454 Phone 970 945-7988 Job No. 195 426 Subject: I, Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, Lot 32, Big Dipper Road, Belly Ache Ridge, Eagle County, Colorado Dear Russell: As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. met with you and observed the excavation at the subject site on September 6, 1995 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you, dated September 5, 1995. The residence is proposed to be one and two stories of wood frame above crawl space. The garage area will be cut into the hillside and have a slab -on -grade ground floor. Spread footings sized for a maximum bearing pressure of 2,500 psf have been assumed for support. At the time of our visit to the site, the building excavation had been cut in multiple levels from I to 14 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The garage area was deeply cut into the hillside and the crawl space area essentially daylighted from the slope. The soils exposed in the bottom of the crawl space area excavation consisted of a mixture of rock fragments in a sandy silt and clay matrix. Results of swell -consolidation testing performed on a sample of the matrix soil, shown on Fig. 1, indicate low compressibility under natural low moisture and moderate to high compressibility when wetted and loaded. The deep part of the garage cut had been overshot by blasting and the loosened material leveled to footing grade by driving over with a trackhoe. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist to moist: The soils have variable settlement potential and there is a risk of differential settlement, especially if they become wetted. The natural bedrock is essentially incompressible, but the overshot area could compress under loading, depending on the effectiveness of the compaction. The total soil depth above bedrock is expected to be 3 to 5 feet, based on the profiles exposed in the excavation. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the natural soil and bedrock designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 2,500 psf can be used for support of the proposed residence. There could be post -construction settlements up to about 1 to 2 inches if the bearing soils become wetted. Deepening the bearing levels onto the sandstone bedrock should essentially eliminate the settlement risk. Footings should be a minimum width of Russell Gies September 20, 1995 Page 2 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils at the foundation bearing level within the excavation should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 14 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 45 pcf for on -site soil backfill (excluding oversized rock). A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of each level of excavation. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on -site soils compacted to at least 95 % of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
