Box 1350 Edwards, CO 81632 RE: Horse Washing Facilities Dear Mr. Gilbert, Per your request, we have evaluated the adequacy of existing horse washing facilities at a residence in Eagle, Colorado. The property currently has three (3) horses boarded at the site. It is my understanding that there is currently a 300 gallon tank with an absorption field comprised of screened rock. It is further my understanding that approximately one (1) horse is washed per day. Per my discussions with the Berry Creek Equestrian Center, approximately 30 gallons of water is used to wash a horse. Based on this estimate, your maximum water consumption would range between 30-90 gallons per day, if all three horses were washed. Eagle County standards currently require a 30 hour detention time for effluents in a tank. Based on this requirement and a maximum water usage of 90 gpd, the detention time in you tank would be 80 hours which is more than adequate. Should the facilities be expanded in the future, we would estimate the maximum number of horses to be eight (8 total). Based on this number, you will still be able to obtain the 30-hour detention time requirement. Should you wish to expand the facilities beyond eight (8) horses, we would recommend that you evaluate upgrading the existing horse washing facilities.
