The project consists of using the two existing 1,000 gallon septic tanks and pump to deliver wastewater to a new soil treatment area consisting of 8,800 square feet of absorption area via a "Bell-Patt" distribution system as shown on the engineered drawings. The intent of the distribution system is to allow a section to be shut off from receiving wastewater and allow periodic resting due to heavy clay soils. System is designed to serve a five bedroom dwelling. It is recommended to connect the existing mound soil treatment area to the effluent line and close the ball valve to allow the existing area to rest and be available for future emergency or "back up" use. Contact the design engineer for additional installation detail and to conduct inspections at key points during the installation. Engineer certification is required prior to using the new system. Subsurface conditions were investigated on June 20th 2012. SITE CONDITIONS The site is located in Eagle County, Colorado, outside of Basalt, in an area where OWTS and wells are necessary. The existing drain field has failed and must be replaced. Ground cover consists of native grasses, with a slight slope to the north. A 5-bedroom, single-family residence exists. A well serves the residence. SUBSURFACE Subsurface conditions were investigated by digging a profile hole and three percolation holes at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions at Profile 1 consist of 1-foot of clayey topsoil, underlain by very stiff clay to 6 feet, underlain by sandy clay with cobbles and gravel the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Free water was not encountered in Profile 1. Percolation test results indicate percolation rates of 180 minutes per inch (MPI). DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS The OWTS design is based on 5-bedrooms, an average sewage load of 750 GPD and an application rate of 0.18 gallons per square foot (SF) per day. The application rate is based on evapotranspiration and absorption. The installation must include the existing septic tanks with the existing pump, followed by 8800 SF of drip irrigation Bel Pat drain field. Eleven 8-foot by 100-foot sections of drip irrigation field must be installed for a total area of 8800 SF. Distribution valves must be used to distribute effluent to the drain field. Onsite Wastewater System Page 2 A diversion valve should be placed up-gradient of both systems to allow future use of the existing absorption area. The existing absorption area is currently experiencing saturated conditions and should be off-line for at least 2 years to allow time to dry out. The existing system consists of 750 square feet of sand filter material in a mound with a basal area of 1125 square feet, according to Eagle County ISDS Permit Number 0880 and Wright Water Engineer design dated August 17, 1988. The new system will be used primarily and the existing system will only be used in the case of an emergency. An accurate record of any system diversions must be kept on-site. Construction must be according to the Eagle County ISDS regulations, the septic permit provided by Eagle County Environmental Health Department, and this design. The surface of the field must be seeded after installation of the system to minimize erosion and provide vegetation transpiration. A native seed mix should be used. The seed mixes should not require irrigation. Do not irrigate over drain field. Erosion control should be practiced prior to and during re-vegetation. No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials should be placed on backfilled drain field. INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS The installation of the OWTS is to be observed by the ALL SERVICE septic, LLC and the county. An observation is required prior to backfill. The drain field should be ready for backfill with all pipes in place. Other components such as distribution valves, effluent filters or pumping systems, as applic- able, will be observed at that time. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES No staging of materials or heavy machinery should be driven over the drain field area prior to construction. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of drain field during construction due to the potential to compaction of soil. If the design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Precast concrete tanks and distribution boxes should be used, unless plastic or fiberglass is required. Access to all tank compartments and distribution devices is optimal. OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE The homeowner is responsible for maintaining the system. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years, or as needed gauged by measurement of solids in the tank. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWTS. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWTS. For example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a drain field. Livestock and automobile traffic should be kept off the drain field at all times. No landscaping or plastic should be used over the drain field that will reduce the performance of the drain field. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWTS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWTS. The OWS is engineered for domestic waste only. The drain field should not be irrigated. Onsite Wastewater System Page 3 LIMITS: A low-pressure drip irrigation system requires installation by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. If conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be called to observe the conditions. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications that are not depicted in our report are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to be approved by the county health department, and is to have demonstrated knowledge of the ISDS regulations and requirements. If there are questions please call. Sincerely, Tim Petz ALL SERVICE septic, LLC August 31, 2012 Project No. C1006 Kelly and Lizzie Klein 108 Crown Mountain Drive Basalt, CO 81621 Installation Observations 108 Crown Mountain Drive Eagle County, Colorado ISDS Permit number 7-12-7709 Kelly and Lizzie, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC observed the installation of the onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) on multiple occasions throughout the installation of the system for the subject property, which occurred late July into early August, 2012. The installation included the existing septic tanks and pump. An effluent filter was added to the outlet tee of the first tank in the series. Ball valves have been installed which will allow diversion of effluent to the old mounded absorption area. It is recommended the old mounded absorption area be allowed to dry out for at least 2 years before turning it back on line. Any alternating of systems must be recorded by the owner for future reference. Effluent is currently being routed to a new, sub-surface drip irrigation system. Distribution valves have been placed in a sprinkler box. There are 11 sections of 100’ of drip line, totaling 8800 square feet of absorption area. The OWTS was generally installed according to specifications. This observation is not a guarantee of workmanship and/or parts and materials. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified if changes are made to the OWTS. LIMITS: The observations were based on information submitted. If conditions are different from conditions described in this letter, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. Any additional OWTS construction must be according to the county regulations. The installer should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. Please call with questions.
