HomeMy WebLinkAboutR21-083 Supporting Ballot Issue 1A Modifying Term Limits for the Office of County Commissioner DocuSign Envelope ID:2C6621D2-B7DD-4265-AA5E-D800EB1DD469 Commissioner McQueeney moved adoption of the following Resolution: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE,STATE OF COLORADO RESOLUTION NO.2021- 083 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING BALLOT ISSUE 1A—MODIFYING TERM LIMITS FOR THE OFFICE OF COUNTY COMMISSIONER WHEREAS,the Board of County Commissioners for Eagle County("Board") is authorized by section 1-45-117(1)(b)(III)(A)to pass a resolution taking a position of advocacy on any local ballot issue; and WHEREAS,Eagle County Commissioners are currently limited to two four-year terms and must run for re-election to additional terms; and WHEREAS,voters may change county leadership during a regular election; and WHEREAS,providing the option for three terms will allow experience and political connections to develop and be maintained on the Board of County Commissioners; and WHEREAS, it takes time for a commissioner to master the internal and external workings of local government,while also building seniority in leadership positions at the state and federal levels; and WHEREAS, commissioners serve as liaisons on various state and federal committees that oversee and make policy on water,transportation,human services, emergency management, natural resources,and other topics; and WHEREAS, allowing an additional term in office would allow more consistency in these state and federal level leadership positions,providing a stronger voice for Eagle County; and WHEREAS, serving an additional term would allow a commissioner to extend the county's advocacy efforts and provide continuity on important issues like land-use files, emergency management,wildfire mitigation,transportation,housing, and other topics of public interest; and WHEREAS, state law allows local governments to place term-limit exemption questions to voters to ensure that expertise and experience can be maintained in key elected positions within a community; and WHEREAS, dozens of Colorado counties currently allow commissioners to serve additional terms with significant constituent benefit. • DocuSign Envelope ID:2C6621D2-B7DD-4265-AA5E-D800EB1DD469 NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS FOR EAGLE COUNTY: The Board supports the passage of Ballot Issue 1A—Modifying term limits for the Office of County Commissioner.
