COUNTY OF EAGLE,STATE OF COLORADO
RESOLUTION NO. 2018 - 0-11
RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL AS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS
MONTH IN EAGLE COUNTY
WHEREAS, each year, the month of April is marked by the National Sexual Violence
Resource Center and organizations nationwide as an opportunity to bring attention to the fact that
sexual violence is widespread and impacts every person in communities; and
WHEREAS, the goal of Sexual Assault Awareness Month ("SAAM") is to raise public
awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it; and
WHEREAS, nearly 1 in 5 women in the United States have experienced sexual assault
or attempted assault at some time in their lives, and 1 in 71 American men have experienced
sexual assault or attempted assault; and
WHEREAS, this year's theme for SAAM, "Embrace Your Voice," recognizes that when
individuals and communities use their voices to bring awareness to sexual assault, we can make a
true impact and become an agent for change; and
WHEREAS, anyone can be a leader in the fight to prevent and end sexual assault, and all
Americans have an obligation to uphold the basic principle that every individual should be free
from violence and fear; and
WHEREAS, individuals can embrace their voices to show their support for survivors,
stand up to victim blaming, shut down rape jokes, correct harmful misconceptions, promote
everyday consent, and practice healthy communications with children; and
WHEREAS, we must work together to educate our community about sexual violence
prevention, supporting survivors, and speaking out against harmful attitudes and actions.
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF THE COUNTY OF EAGLE,STATE OF COLORADO:
THAT, the Board of Commissioners (the "Board")hereby declares April 2018 as Sexual
Assault Awareness Month in Eagle County.
THAT, the Board hereby calls upon public officials, business and community leaders,
and educators, and encourages all citizens to observe this Sexual Assault Awareness Month with
appropriate ceremonies, activities and programs in order to:
• Join advocates and communities across the country in taking action to prevent sexual
violence; and
• Acknowledge that awareness is beneficial because it encourages reflection and change on
how we think and talk about the issue of sexual violence, and we can create a culture of
respect, equality, and safety; and
• Promote sexual assault prevention efforts and ensure the next generation fosters attitudes
that promote healthy relationships, equality and respect; and
• Support initiatives to prevent sexual violence and create a healthy future.
THAT, the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this Resolution is necessary
for the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the County of Eagle, State of
Colorado.
