BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO
RESOLUTION NO. 2009 - ~ u
Resolution Designating the Month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month
WHEREAS, the family is the foundation of a safe and healthy community and domestic
violence shatters this crucial foundation; and
WHEREAS, the problem of domestic violence affects all citizens of Eagle County crossing
racial, social, religious, ethnic, geographic and economic groups; and
WHEREAS, in 2008 in Colorado, at least 33 people died in 24 fatal incidents related to
domestic abuse, including 7 children murdered. The victims ranged in age from 21 months old to 64
years old, whereas the offenders ranged in age from 18 to 68. The most frequent cause of death was
use of a firearm; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, Domestic Violence crimes comprised 22 percent of all misdemeanors in
Colorado; and
WHEREAS, children between the ages of 0-12 comprised 18 percent of all the individuals who
received services from domestic abuse programs in 2008. In Eagle County, two thirds of shelter residents were
children; and
WHEREAS, we must strive to raise awareness of the consequences of domestic violence on
future generations, as children who witness abuse are more likely to engage in abuse as adults; and
WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2009 provides an opportunity for us to
show our appreciation to the many professionals and volunteers in Eagle County who assist victims of
domestic violence, and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the impact that domestic violence has on the health and well
being of our community we commend The Bright Future Foundation of Eagle County for providing
safety and security for victims through their emergency shelter, counseling, legal, advocacy and
prevention services; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the Eagle County Board Commissioners does hereby proclaim the
month of October 2009 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month and urges all citizens of Eagle
County to remember the victims of domestic violence, celebrate the survivors, and work together to
eliminate violence against women and children in our community.
THAT, the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this resolution is an important
acknowledgement for the health and safety of the citizens in the County of Eagle, State of Colorado.
