HomeMy WebLinkAboutR09-107 Domestic Violence Awareness MonthCommissioner ~ ~ ~~~ ~~---1 of the following proclamation: moved adoption BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO RESOLUTION NO. 2009 - ~ u Resolution Designating the Month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month WHEREAS, the family is the foundation of a safe and healthy community and domestic violence shatters this crucial foundation; and WHEREAS, the problem of domestic violence affects all citizens of Eagle County crossing racial, social, religious, ethnic, geographic and economic groups; and WHEREAS, in 2008 in Colorado, at least 33 people died in 24 fatal incidents related to domestic abuse, including 7 children murdered. The victims ranged in age from 21 months old to 64 years old, whereas the offenders ranged in age from 18 to 68. The most frequent cause of death was use of a firearm; and WHEREAS, in 2008, Domestic Violence crimes comprised 22 percent of all misdemeanors in Colorado; and WHEREAS, children between the ages of 0-12 comprised 18 percent of all the individuals who received services from domestic abuse programs in 2008. In Eagle County, two thirds of shelter residents were children; and WHEREAS, we must strive to raise awareness of the consequences of domestic violence on future generations, as children who witness abuse are more likely to engage in abuse as adults; and WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2009 provides an opportunity for us to show our appreciation to the many professionals and volunteers in Eagle County who assist victims of domestic violence, and WHEREAS, in recognition of the impact that domestic violence has on the health and well being of our community we commend The Bright Future Foundation of Eagle County for providing safety and security for victims through their emergency shelter, counseling, legal, advocacy and prevention services; and NOW, THEREFORE, the Eagle County Board Commissioners does hereby proclaim the month of October 2009 to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month and urges all citizens of Eagle County to remember the victims of domestic violence, celebrate the survivors, and work together to eliminate violence against women and children in our community. THAT, the Board hereby finds, determines and declares that this resolution is an important acknowledgement for the health and safety of the citizens in the County of Eagle, State of Colorado.
