HomeMy WebLinkAboutR06-021 Opposing Public Auction of US forest Service Land to Fund Unrelated Federal Programs ~~~ moved adoption of the following Resolution: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO RESOLUTION NO. 2006- {);2( A RESOLUTION OPPOSING PUBLIC AUCTION OF U.S. FOREST SERVICE LAND IN EAGLE COUNTY TO FUND UNRELATED FEDERAL PROGRAMS WHEREAS, the U.S. President's FY 2007 Budget Proposal for the Forest Service includes provision for funding renewal of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self- Determination Act of 2000 by sale to the highest bidder of designated parcels of land owned by the U.S. Forest Service; and WHEREAS, two of the designated parcels of land are in the Edwards area of Eagle County; and WHEREAS, the Board opposes any federal action that would result in the loss of open space in Eagle County, particularly when such space is located in an area of the County that already is experiencing rapid development that strains the resources of the County and simultaneously impacts qualities that make Eagle County a desireable place to live and work; and WHEREAS, the Board particularly opposes such action where it is intended to raise revenue to fund federal programs unrelated to the proper role of the Forest Service as a guardian and custodian of public land; and WHEREAS, the Board desires to take action to prevent the sale to the highest bidder of the parcels of land located in Eagle County, and to make provision for local governments to have the first oPportunity to purchase any parcels that are sold. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL VED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF THE COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO: THAT, the Board hereby states its opposition to the sale of the parcels of Forest Service land located in Eagle County that have been targeted for sale to the highest bidder; and THA T, the Board hereby resolves to take such action as is available to it to prevent such sale, including (a) preparation and submission to the Forest Service, during the period for formal comment on the proposal, of the case against such sale, and the case for allowing local governments to have the first opportunity to purchase any parcels that are sold; and (b) presenting its opposition to such sale to the U.S. Congressman representing Eagle County and both U.S. Senators from Colorado; and (c) cooperating with private groups or entities opposing such sale in bringing their collective influence to bear in opposition to such sale. THEREFORE, the Board of County Commissioners finds, determines and declares that this Resolution is necessary for the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado. MOVED, READ AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Eagle, State of Colorado, at its regular meeting held the 28th day of February, 2006.
