HomeMy WebLinkAboutR24-030 Proclaiming Colorado Mountain College's Common Reader 2024 DocuSign Envelope ID:69A26A27-1885-4A9A-81 D9-BED2C60E96DC Commissioner McQueeney moved adoption of the following Resolution: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO RESOLUTION No. 2024-030 RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING COLORADO MOUNTAIN COLLEGE'S COMMON READER 2024 WHEREAS, Common Reader programs have united and uplifted hundreds of institutions of higher learning and their communities throughout the United States of America; and, WHEREAS, the book The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens by Richard Haass is a political science and domestic politics title published in 2023 that is available in print, eBook& eAudiobook formats; and, WHEREAS,New York Times bestselling author Richard Haass is president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations after having served as CFR's president for twenty years; a seasoned diplomat, he chaired the multiparty negotiations in 2013 in Northern Ireland that provided the foundation for the 2014 Stormont House Agreement; for his efforts to promote peace and conflict resolution, he received the 2013 Tipperary International Peace Award; and WHEREAS, The Bill of Obligations is a bold call for change; in these pages, Haass argues that the very idea of citizenship must be revised and expanded; the Bill of Rights is at the center of our Constitution, yet our most intractable conflicts often emerge from contrasting views as to what our rights ought to be; the United States faces dangerous threats from Russia, China,North Korea, Iran, terrorists, climate change, and future pandemics; the greatest peril to the country, however, comes not from abroad but from within, from none other than ourselves; the question facing us is whether we are prepared to do what is necessary to save our democracy; and WHEREAS, the Colorado Mountain College Common Reader program began in 2007; every year a book is chosen from those books nominated by faculty, staff, and students across all campuses; each successive year the program has grown in participation,readership, and creative opportunities; a major component of this engaging experience is the opportunity to meet and dialogue with the authors; the Common Reader program provides a wonderful opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and community members to engage in deep learning and meaningful conversation around a common theme; and DocuSign Envelope ID:69A26A27-1885-4A9A-81 D9-BED2C60E96DC WHEREAS, this Common Reader will feature a non-partisan series of community conversations about civic engagement and civil discourse; a livestreamed interview between New York Times bestselling author Richard Haass and Walter Isaacson, former editor of TIME and chair of CNN and the namesake for CMC's Isaacson School for Communication, Arts and Media, moderated by NPR's Mary Louise Kelly; Rediscovering Common Ground live conversations at five Colorado Mountain College campuses; and special guest appearances by the author on CMC campuses in the fall; and, WHEREAS, Colorado Mountain College, in collaboration with Aspen Public Radio, PBS 12, and the Isaacson School for Communication, Arts, and Media, have resolved to bring this Common Reader program to the citizens of Eagle County; and, WHEREAS, the Common Reader will encourage literacy and shared enjoyment of reading throughout Eagle County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF THE COUNTY OF EAGLE, STATE OF COLORADO: THAT, the Eagle County Commissioners do hereby promote the Common Reader initiative and officially announce and promote the book The Bill of Obligations to all Eagle County residents for their enjoyment and the enjoyment of all.
