Additional Tank Capacity Options
As we discussed on the telephone a few minutes ago, you have a couple of options to
resolve the tank capacity issue. As you mentioned, the tank which was installed is 1,250
gallons. According to Chapter 4 of our Eagle County Land Use Regulations, specifically,
4.07.01, 2), fl, the first compartment of the septic tank shall hold no less than one half the
required effective capacity. The required effective capacity for your five bedroom home
is 1,500 gallons. This means that at least 750 gallons of storage needs to be in the first
"compartment". You mentioned that Copeland's 1,250 gallon tank is manufactured to
provide two thirds storage in the first compartment or roughly 833 gallons.
Since 833 gallons exceeds the minimum 750 gallons in first compartment storage,
you have two options to consider in order to increase the effective capacity to 1,500
gallons total. You could either install a minimum of 250 gallons of storage after the
existing tank, somewhere between the tank and the drain field, maintaining at least.
10 feet between the tank and first absorption trench; or add a minimum of 750
gallons of one -compartment storage, somewhere between the existing tank and the
house, maintaining at least 5 feet between the house and the tank. There is no
minimum separation required between tanks.
Your licensed contractor, Welch Excavating, knows to maintain the aforementioned
setbacks and to install the tanks allowing for access within eight inches of finished
grade. Please contact me when you have selected which option works best for you
so we can document this change on an amended permit at no cost to you. Eagle
County Environmental Health will not charge additional fees associated with the
services of permit amendment nor final inspections on your property.

As requested, we have performed a subsurface investigation and a percolation test at the subject site The
purpose of our investigation was to determine subsurface conditions and percolation rates for an Onsite
Wastewater System (OWS)_ The subsurface investigation was performed on May 13, 20()3
SITE CONDITIONS
The site is located in a rural residential area in Eagle County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area has
an approximate 1 b% slope to the south and has a full cover of native grasses in the proposed field area. The
site will be served water by a community well.
PESn'COLA HON TEST
Percolation tests were conducted by digging a test pit and three percolation holes, 33 to 38 inches deep at
the locations indicated on Figure 2. The depth of the percolation holes was determined by the anticipated
receiving soils, which is the clayey sand layer. Subsurface conditions consisted of clayey sand -to 4.5 feet,
underlain by sandy clay to the maximum depth explored. of 8. feet. No ground water was encountered within
the excavation. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 2& to 22 minutes per inch (MPI). The
underlying sandy clay does not appear to be a restrictive zone. Percolation rates were consistently good to a
depth of 47 inches. The average percolation rate is 21 WI. Test results are attached as Table 1.
LEVWATIONS
Our investigation is based on data submitted and conditions encountered. If subsurface conditions
considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate
the effect on the proposed OWS. The project engineer for this site is Tim Petz.
