PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS AND SEPTIC SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LOT 7, FILING 4, PILGRIM DOWNS EAGLE COUNTY, COLORADO PREPARED FOR: MR. ED SCHENCK III PROJECT NO. 90337E SEPTEMBER 1990 Box No. 978 • Avon. Colorado 81620 • 949-5072 Denver 893-1531 1420 Vance Street • Lakewood. Colorado 80215 • Phone: 232-0158 2 ThIA report presents the reaults of percolation tests and provides septic system recommendations for the proposed single family residence on Lot 7, Pilgrim Downs Filing No_ 4• Eagle County, Colorado. This site was investigated and five percolation tests were dug to a minimum depth of 27 inches. Holes were presoaked and percolation tests performed. Results of these tests are included in this report; see PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS. The site'is located on Pilgrim Drive in Pilgrim Downs Subdivision in Eagle County, Colorado. The site of the absorption trenches slopes to the northeast at approximately 20%. Drainage in the area of the proposed absorption trenches is to the northeast. Vegetation consists of grasses. Subsurface conditions in the proposed leach field area are relatively uniform, and consist of 1 1/2 foot of topsoil underlain by silty, sandy, clayey loam to a depth of 8 feet. No groundwater was encountered during excavation. 3 PERCOLAT-ON TEST RESULTS A total of five percolation tests were performed on the site. Results were as follows: Tpst Hole Min/1" Drop Date of Test Ambient Air Temp. 1 24 9/16/90 80 2 30 9/16/90 80 3 24 9/16/90 80 4 60 9/16/90 80 5 30 9/16/90 80 Average time for 1 inch drop = 35.6 minutes DESIGN CRITERIA A single-family residence has been proposed for this site for year-round use. The residence will have a total of five (5) bedrooms, and will be equipped with a garbage disposer and automatic clothes washing machine. Thus design criteria for calculations are: 2 persons/bedroom 75 gallons/person/day-average flow +20% absorption area for garbage disposer +40% absorption area for automatic washer -25% absorption area for dosing tank Maximum flow: 150% of average flow CALCULATIONS A= Q_Y Where A= minimum absorption area (sq. ft.) 5 Q= maximum quantity of sewage flow (gal/day) T= percolation rate (min/inch) Q= 5 x 2 x 75 x 1.5 = 1125 gal/day A= Q(— = 112535.6 = 1343 sq. ft. 5 5 r 4 +1343 sq. ft. +267 sq. ft.(disposal +20%) +537 sq. ft.(washer +40%) 1811 sq. ft. absorption area From table 5, a minimum area of 300 sq. ft. per bedroom is required. (300 x 5 = 1500 sq. ft., which is less than the 1811 sq. ft. from the previous calculation.) Minimum area of absorption trench is 1811 sq. ft. If Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. SB2 10 inch "gravel -less" leach bed tubing is used, one lineal foot of pipe is required for each three square feet of absorption trench area: thus 606 lineal feet is required. From Table 4 (section 4.07.01 of the Eagle County Regulations), a 1500 gallon septic tank is required. Based on the preceding calculations it is recommended to install a 1500-gallon compartmented septic tank followed by a minimum 1811 square foot seepage trench. The seepage trench should lie a.minimum of 10 feet from all property lines and 20 feet from the proposed residence. An inspection of the system should be made by a representative of the Eagle County Environmental Health Department prior to backfilling. The installation and material specifications must comply with the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. 5 As an alternative to the standard 1811 square foot seepage trench, 606 lineal feet of SB2 10-inch diameter "gravel -less" leach bed tubing (as manufactured by Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc.) can be embedded in the native soils of the site. A dosing chamber with siphon will be installed. The dosing chamber will allow for periodic high rate discharge to the field. This will prolong the life of the drainage field. The dose discharge should be approximately 600 gallons. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Mr. Ed Schenck III for the specific application to the proposed single-family residence on Lot 7, Filing 4, Pilgrim Downs• Eagle County, Colorado. The findings and recommendations of this report have been obtained in accordance with accepted professional engineering practices. There is no other warranty, either expressed or implied. If we can be of further assistance, please call. Sincerely, Inter -Mountain Engineering Ltd. Gray Pearson, P.E. Project Engineer APPLICATION FOR INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM PERMIT PIPER RESIDENCE LOT 7, FILING 4, PILGRIM DOWNS EAGLE, COLORADO OCTOBER 8, 1991 PREPARED BY: ALPINE ENGINEERING, INC. P.O. BOX 97 EDWARDS, CO 81632 (303) 926-3373 INTRODUCTION In September of 1990, InterMountain Engineering submitted an application for a septic system for Lot 7, Filing 4, Pilgrim Downs. The residence, now existing, has a total of 5 bedrooms. Currently, a 1 bedroom caretakers unit is proposed to be added to the lot. The desired location of the caretaker unit is below the existing septic tank and absorption trenches, so that it is proposed to provide a new septic tank and absorption trench area for the new caretaker unit. Adequate space exists to construct additional trenches adjacent to the existing field. PERCOLATION TEST/SOIL PROFILE The proposed caretaker absorption trench is to be located immediately adjacent to the existing absorption trench. Percolation rates performed by InterMountain Engineering for the existing field should correspond to the soil characteristics for the caretaker unit. The average percolation rate was 36 minutes/inch. We recommend using a seed mix such as a 'Foothills, Future, or prairie' sixes available at local food and seed stores. These nixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. 'No automatic sprinkler system should be installed above the disposal field. Operation and maintenance plan The owner must realise pan ossito swage disposal system is considerably different from public sewer services. The owner must be aware of and assume the responsibility for continued maiatenanco of the system. We recommend the pumping of the septic tanks at the end Dl the first year of use to monitor slwdgo accumulation and at a ■iaimum of every 2 years afterward. There are also daily considerations, such as not patting plastic or other nmubiodogrsdable material down the sewage disposal system. ►lso, water use must be carefully monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, it should be noted a ruaaing toi'-rt will cansumu in excess of 1000 gallons per day If allowed to run. ixcassivo loading (such as from running twilets) will flood and irrevocably harm the system, and stress the omsits welt. We also caution you against installation of a water softener. The high levels of salt fro■ the backwash of a water softener is detrimental to all owite sewage disposal systems and a seParato drywall should be eonstruetod'for the backwash waste If a water softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can bo installed over the disposal field which will reduce evapotranspiration from tha field.
