Box 947 Eagle, CO. 81631 RE: Cordillera Septic Systems Dear Terrill: This letter is intended to summarize the geologic conditions for purposes of waste disposal in the central part of the Cordillera Subdivision where most of the multi -family systems will be. As indicated in my earlier report and the Lincoln/DeVore report, the sandstones, siltstones and shales of the formations in that area are very steeply to vertically dipping and highly weathered. In the many test holes that we excavated in this vicinity, the permeable soils graded into similarly permeable weathered bedrock which graded into fractured bedrock. It was considered that the permeable "soil" profile existed to at least the top of the fractured bedrock, which in most cases yielded at least eight feet of suitable material. There were, however, certain areas where fractured bedrock was nearer the surface than this, and that is why more detailed site investigations were performed. Percolation rates were nearly always in the acceptable range and at least several suitable sites were found in all areas. I anticipate no problem in lbcating adequate drain field sites as long as fractured bedrock is greater than eight feet below the surface. It should be remembered that resistant sandstone beds run through the development very near or at the surface, and these must be avoided. I hope I have answered your questions, but feel free to contact me again. NL/clk Sincerely, Nicholas Lampiris Consulting Geologist 'OV /f\o' jrEZn0:T=Ud. PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS AND SEPTIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LOT 48,'CORDILLERA SUBDIVISION, FILING NO. 2 EAGLE COUNTY,-COLORADO PREPARED FOR: KENSINGTON LAND INVESTMENT PARTNERS PROJECT NUMBER V-7138G OCTOBER 1987 REVISED APRIL 1988 Box No. 978 1420 Vance Street Avon, Colorado 81620 Lakewood. Colorado 80215 949-5072 Denver 893-1531 Phone: 232-0158 SCOPE This report presents the results of percolation tests and provides septic system recommendations for the proposed single family residence on Lot 48, Cordillera Subdivision, Filing No. 2, Eagle County, Colorado. SITE INVESTIGATION The site was investigated on October 20, 1987, and three percolation test holes were dug to a minimum depth of 30 inches. Holes were presoaked and percolation tests per- formed on October 26, 1987. Results of these tests are included in this report; see PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS. A test pit was excavated to a depth of 7 feet on October 27, 1987 with a conventional backhoe. The locations of the percolation test holes are shown on Drawing No. 1. A summary of the test pits is detailed on Figure No. 1. SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The site is located at G095 Grand Traverse in Eagle County, Colorado. A ridge line running north to south divides the lot. Drainage in the area of the absorption trenches is to the west. Vegetation consists of sage brush and grasses. E SUBSURFACE AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS . Subsurface conditions in the proposed leach field area are uniform, and consist of topsoil to a depth of 1-1/2 feet underlain by very weathered bedrock to a depth of 7 feet underlain by bedrock. Nicholas Lampiris, Ph.D., has studied the subdivision to determine the suitability of the area for individual septic systems. The enclosed letter dated October 30, 1987, states that the permeability of the weathered bedrock is similar to soil. PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS A total of three percolation tests were performed on the site as specified by the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. Results were as follows: Test Hole Min/1" Drop Date of Test Ambient Air Temp. 1 7.1 10/21/87 500 F 2 10.9 10/21/87 500 F 3 10.0 10/21/87 500 F Average time for 1 inch drop = 9.32 minutes. DESIGN CRITERIA A single family residence has been proposed for this site for year-round use. The residence will have a total of five (5) bedrooms, and will be equipped with a garbage disposer and automatic clothes washing-machi.ne., Thus design criteria for calculations are: DESIGN CRITERIA - continued 2 persons/bedroom 75 gallons/person/day - average flow +20% absorption area for garbage disposer +40% absorption area for automatic washer +25% absorption area for dosing tank +30% absorption area for reducing subsidence Maximum flow: 150% of average flow CALCULATIONS 3 A = QjE where A = minimum absorption area (sq.ft.) 5 Q = maximum quantity of sewage flow (gal/day) T = percolation rate (min/inch) Q= 5 x 2 x 75 x 1.5 = 1125 gal/day A = Q T = 11259 . 3 2 = 687 s ft. 5 +137 sq. ft. (disposal +20%) +275 sq. ft. Nasher +40%) -172 sq. ft. (dosing -25%) +206 sq. ft. (subsidence +30%) 1,133 sq. ft. absorption trench From Table 5, a minimum area of 165 sq. ft. per bedroom is required. (165 x 5 = 825 sq. ft., which is less than 1133 sq. ft.) Minimum area of the absorption trench is 1,133 sq. ft, use 1,140 sq. ft. If Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc, SB2 10-inch gravelless leach bed tubing is used, one lineal foot of pipe is required for each three square feet of absorption trench; thus 380 lineal feet is required. From Table 4 (Section 4.07.01 of the Eagle County Regu- lations), a 1,500 gallon septic tank is required. 4 SEPTIC SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the preceding calculations, it is recommended to install a 1500-gallon compartmented septic tank followed by a minimum 1140 square foot seepage trench. The seepage trench should lie a minimum of 10 feet from all property lines, and 20 feet from the proposed residence. An inspection of the system should be made by a representative of the Eagle County Environmental Health Department prior to backfilling. The installation and material specifications must comply with the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. An an alternate to the standard 1140 square foot seepage trench, 380 lineal feet of 10-inch diameter "gravelless" leach bed tubing (as manufactured by Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc.) could be embedded in the native soils of the site. Due to the remoteness of the site, this alternate would probably be cost-effective. A dosing chamber with dual alternating siphons will be installed. The dosing chamber will allow for periodic high rate discharge to alternating portions of the drainage field instead of a slow trickle into the field. This would prolong the life of the drainage field. Beds are typically used for single homes or other small systems because they are easier to construct. The shape of the bed, however, depends on the permeability of the natural soil and the slope of the site. In most instances, a rectangular bed with the long axis parallel to the slope contour is preferred to minimize the risk of seepage from the base of the mound. If the natural soil has a percola- tion rate slower than 60 min/in. (24 min/cm), the bed should be made narrow and extended along the contour as far as possible (see Figure 7- 12). In soils with percolation rates faster than 60 min/in. (24 min/cm) , the bed can be square if the water table is greater than 3 ft (0.9 m) below the natural ground surface (4)(25).. 245 Johnson, Kunkel & Associates, Inc. Ms. Kathy Scott and myself have both spoken with you previously in regards to the above referenced file. As you may recall, the septic system on Lot 48 encroaches into the neighboring lot and building envelope (Lot 47). We are proposing to relocate the portion of the septic system encroaching Lot 47 back onto Lot 48. According to our phone conversations, you stated that a percolation test would not be necessary, only a soil profile in the area where the relocated septic system would be located would be required. The enclosed letter from Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. satisfies this requirement. We did not redesign the existing septic system, we are simply proposing to backfill the absorption trench that is encroaching onto the adjacent lot and construct a new absorption trench adjacent to the existing Lot 48 septic system. Please refer to "The Divide at Cordillera, Filing No. 2, Lot 48, Septic System Alteration," for the proposed improvements. The work was performed in accordance with our agreement for professional services with you, dated December 4, 2000. The proposed disposal area is located in the northern part of the lot and below the driveway entrance to the residence. The terrain is steep down to the west and vegetated with thick sagebrush and some oak brush. About 1 to 1 1/2feet of snow covered the site at the time of our field work. The profile hole was dug with a Bobcat 341 backhoe to its practical excavation depth limit of 81/2 feet. The hole was dug in the upper southern part of the proposed disposal area. The soils exposed in the pit consisted of 3 feet of topsoil above rock fragments in a silty clay matrix. The lower portion of the pit could be highly weathered claystone/siltstone. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist. If there are any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.
