Dear Doug:
RE; Inspection of Septic System Installation
PHQ Restroonas, Beaver Creek Ski Area
Eagle County, Colorado
Project No. 98124-PIIQ / Permit No. 1818-98
At the :request of Mr. Jeff Robison, of Vail Resorts Management Company, we visited the
construction site for the PHQ Rest Roonis in the Beaver Creek Ski Resort, Eagle County, Colorado. The
purpose of our site visit was to inspect the installation of the septic system.
They installed the system in overall eompliatice with the septic system d.esi&m, Drawhig No.
98124SD.DWG, dated August 31, 1995. The system was installed as shown on the above mimed drawing,
but was not connected to the restrooms. The restrooms and the Devap Systems will b installed the last
week of October. They installed 1000-gallop, two compartments, a precast, concrete septic tank.
Eight Standard Infiltrator Chamber's were installed in two trenches with four Infiiltr-ator,, each. The
infiltrators were connected with serial distribution. In the last ixa£iltrator of. each trezacb, inspection ports
were installed. Horizontal distance from center to center of the trenches, was 9 feet or more. All piping was
SDR-35, 4' inch PVC. The depth of the trenches was two to three feet. The soil profile in the trenches was
consistent with the soil described in the report.
If you have arty questions, please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
I1ui.za Petrovska,

INTRODUCTION
Vail Associates is proposing to replace the existing septic system at Beaver Creek located
at Beaver Creek Patrol Headquarters with 2 (two) new Devap Systems. The existing septic
system was designed for less than 100 or so flushes per day. Peak days have started to reach the
capacity of the existing system.
The Devap System is a waste conversion and reduction system that is an odorless,
waterless process that uses no chemicals to reduce human waste. Liquid waste is evaporated.
Sinks for hand washing are proposed which will bypass the Devap System and be directed into a
standard septic system. Each Devap System can handle up to 150 uses per day, so the 2 systems
can handle up to 300 flushes per day. On peak days where use exceeds 300 flushes, overflow from
the system is proposed to go to a septic tank (same tank as used for hand washing) and then to an
absorption field.
DESIGN FLOW
A. Restrooms
The Devap System does not use water to flush toilets. The restrooms are to be open to the
public (using the ski area). I have contacted Alex Raycheck who sells the Devap System (1-800-
524-1097) to inquire on sizing and system capacity. Based on his experience with systems
installed in areas of similar elevations and uses and systems installed in the Vail ski area the
following assumptions have been made in the design:
Peak Number of Uses Expected: 500 uses
Capacity of 2 Devap Systems: 200 uses
Excess Above Capacity: 300 uses
200 uses per day = 12 gallons of effluent. To be conservative assume 30 gpd.
B. Hand Washino
The hand washing sinks are to be push-button, low -flow type. They are 5 ounce valve
sinks that provide for approximately 1000 hand washes per day. The water for the hand washing
sinks is to be supplied from a 74-gallon tank to be filled daily (or piped from a tank at PHQ)
500 uses per day @ 5 ounces per use = 2500 ounces — 20 gallons
To be conservative use 75 gallons
Average Daily Flow Qavg = 30 gpd from overflow + 75 gpd from hand washing
Qavg = 105 gpd
Qmax = 105 gpd x 150%
Qmax =158 gpd
LKP Engineering, Inc.
SOIL PROFILE AND PERCOLATION TEST
One, 7.5 feet deep soil profile hole and three percolation holes were excavated within the
proposed leachfield area as shown on the location sketch. The soil profile consisted of one foot of
topsoil over 6.5 feet of brown, sandy gravel with cobbles and boulders. The percolation holes
were dug and presoaked on August 17, and we ran the tests on August 18, 1998. The average
percolation rate recommended for design is 20 minutes per inch.
ABSORPTION AREA
A = Qmax/5✓20 = 158gpd/5✓20 = 141 square feet
Compare with Long Term Acceptance Rate of 0.72 gpd/sf
A=158/0.72=219 square feet - more conservative
50% reduction for Infiltrators in a trench configuration
A=110 square feet
Allowed area of one Infiltrator for design = 15.5 square feet
Use 8 infiltrators in two trenches with four infiltrators each. The two trenches with infiltrators will
be connected with serial distribution.
LIMITATIONS
This report has been prepared according to locally accepted professional engineering
standards for similar methods of testing and soil conditions at this time. There is no other
warranty either expressed or implied.
Sincerely,
LKP ENGJNEERING,
