RE: ISDS Application, Chair 21, Vail Ski Resort
Eagle County, Colorado
Project No. 98124
Dear Ray:
We are submitting the application for the septic system at Chair 21, on the Vail Mountain Ski
Resort, Eagle County, Colorado. The system will service public restrooms. Mountain Services of Vail
Associates is proposing to construct restrooms near the bottom of Chair 21. The effluent from the restrooms
will be treated by the Devap 2000 system. The system is odorless and waterless process. It reduces the human
waste and evaporates the liquid waste. The remaining solids are emptied at the end of the ski season when the
access roads are passable.
This system has been used successfully in the White River National Forest and Jackson Hole for
number of years. Also, this system has been in service, for two yers, on the Vail Mountain at Chair 2. All of
the above systems have similar high uses by skiers, and are located on high elevation areas.
In addition, the proposed system for Chair 21, will have a 2000 gallon septic tank for a possible high
use overflow of liquids not evaporated by the system either due to malfunction of the system or surge in use.
Also, part of the constructed system will be a 1000 gallon tank for the waste water from hand washing. The
water for hand washing will be hauled to the restrooms on daily basis. At 5 oz. per hand washing, the 1000-
gallon tank will provide storage for water from 178 hand washes per day for 150 days. This tank will also be
pumped out at the end of the ski season.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call.

INTRODUCTION
Vail Associates is proposing to replace the existing septic system at the Vail Ski Area
located at Top of Chair 21, with 2 (two) new Devap Systems. The existing septic system was
designed for less than 100 or so flushes per day. Peak days have started to reach the capacity of
the existing system.
The Devap System is a waste conversion and reduction system that is an odorless,
waterless process that uses no chemicals to reduce human waste. Liquid waste is evaporated.
Sinks for hand washing are proposed which will bypass the Devap System and be directed into a
standard septic system. Each Devap System can handle up to 150 uses per day, so the 2 systems
can handle up to 300 flushes per day. On peak days where use exceeds 300 flushes, overflow from
the system is proposed to go to a septic tank (same tank as used for hand washing) and then to an
absorption field.
DESIGN FLOW
A. Restrooms
The Devap System does not use water to flush toilets. The restrooms are to be open to the
public (using the ski area). I have contacted Alex Raycheck who sells the Devap System (1-800-
524-1097) to inquire on sizing and system capacity. Based on his experience with systems
installed in areas of similar elevations and uses, and systems installed in the Vail Ski Area, the
following assumptions have been made in the design:
Peak Number of Uses Expected: 500 uses
Capacity of 2 Devap Systems: 200 uses
Excess Above Capacity: 300 uses
200 uses per day = 12 gallons of effluent. To be conservative assume 30 gpd.
B. Hand Washing
The hand washing sinks are to be push-button, low -flow type. They are 5 ounce valve
sinks that provide for approximately 1000 hand washes per day. The water for the hand washing
sinks is to be supplied from a 74-gallon tank to be filled daily (or piped from a tank at PHQ)
500 uses per day @ 5 ounces per use = 2500 ounces — 20 gallons
To be conservative use 75 gallons
Average Daily Flow Qavg = 30 gpd from overflow + 75 gpd from hand washing
Qavg = 105 gpd
Qmax = 105 gpd x 150%
Qmax = 158 gpd

SOIL PROFILE AND PERCOLATION TEST
One, 8 feet deep soil profile hole and three percolation holes were excavated within the
proposed leachfield area as shown on the location sketch. The soil profile consisted of one foot of
topsoil over 7 feet of brown, slightly clayey, sandy gravel with cobbles and boulders. The
percolation holes were dug and presoaked on September 7, and we ran the tests on September 8,
1998. The average percolation rate recommended for design is 20 minutes per inch.
