Subject: Observation of Profile Pit and Percolation Testing, Proposed Mendel
and Grim Residence, Lot 17, Filing 3, Aspen Mountain View Estates,
275 Milburn Court, Eagle County, Colorado
Dear Mr. Owens:
As requested, Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed a profile pit and
performed percolation testing for septic disposal design at the subject site. The study
was conducted in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services
to you dated July 7, 1997. The data obtained is presented in this report.
The subsurface conditions in the septic disposal area were observed in a profile pit and
three percolation holes excavated prior to our site visit at the approximate locations
shown on Fig. 1. The subsoils observed below about 2 feet of topsoil consist of highly
calcareous sandy silt and basalt gravel, cobbles and boulders to the pit depth of 8 feet.
No free water was observed in the profile pit and the soils were
Percolation tests were conducted in the three percolation test holes (nominal 12 inch
diameter by 12 inch deep) that were hand dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and
soaked with water by the client the day before our visit. The percolation test results are
presented in Table I. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the
percolation test results, the tested area should be suitable for a conventional infiltration
septic disposal system. We recommend the infiltration area be oversized due to the
variable subsurface conditions.
If you have any questions or if we may be of further assistance, please let us know.

CALCULATION FOR LEACH FIELD SIZE
CURRENT PROPOSED DESIGN IS A FOUR BEDROOM PRIVATE RESIDENCE.
ACCORDING TO EAGLE COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO
CALCULATE SEWAGE FLOW ASSUME TWO PERSONS PER BEDROOM. AVERAGE DAILY
SEWAGE FLOW IS CALCULATED USING 75 GALLONS PER PERSON PER DAY.
(4 BEDROOMS) x (2 PERSONS PER BEDROOM)
= 8 PEOPLE
AVERAGE DAILY SEWAGE FLOW = (8 PEOPLE) x (75 GPD/PERSON) = 600 GPD
MANGMUM DAILY SEWAGE FLOW = (1.5) x AVERAGE DAILY FLOW =
(1.5) x (600 GPD) 900 GPD
MINIMUM SEPTIC TANK SIZE FOR A FOUR BEDROOM RESIDENCE = 1250 gallons
Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechincal, Inc. Performed Percolation Tests, see attached report. For our
calculations we will use a percolation rate of 15 min/in.
THE ABSORPTION AREA (A) FOR A NORMAL GRAVEL TYPE LEACH FIELD IS
CALCULATED USING THE FORMULA. A FACTOR OF 1.6 IS USED IN THIS
CALCULATION FOR A RESIDENCE USING AN AUTOMATIC WASHER AND FOOD
GRINDER:
A = (1.6) x Q x (SQUARE ROOT OF t)
5
Where:
Q = MAXIMUM DAILY SEWAGE FLOW = 900 gallons per day
t = PERCOLATION RATE = 15 min/in.
THEREFORE:
A = (1.6) x (900) x (SOUAREROOT OF 15) = 1,115.42 sq. ft.
5
ACCORDING TO THE COLORADO STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, FOR THE DESIGN OF A
LEACH FIELD USING THE "Bio Diffuser" disposal system in a trench configuration, a reduction of up to
50% in the size of the absorption area is allowed.
THEREFORE, because of the "variable sub -surface conditions" we will use a 40% reduction in the
absorption area:
(0.60) x (1,115.42 sq. ft.) = 669.25 sq. ft.
The bottom area of a `Bio Diffuser" unit is 18 sq. ft.
THEREFORE:
The number of `Bio Diffuser" units required is = (669.25 18) = 38 units
Minimum Horizontal Distances shall conform to Eagle County Land Use Regulations, Chapter IV,
Individual Sewage Disposal Systems (ISDS).
All components of the septic system shall be installed according to the Eagle County Land Use
Regulations, Colorado Department of Health and according to manufacturer specifications.

Re: Grim I.S.D.S., Pro Construction
Dear Heather:
I've been thinking about our telephone conversation last Monday, in which you would prefer
that the leachfield be reconfigured for serial connections of the individual lines. Essentially,
this creates a leachfield that is 228 feet long. Most governing agencies that I have worked
with (Colorado, Nevada and California) restrict individual leach lines to less than 100 feet.
Additional concerns are as follows:
Actual dosing of the leachfield occurs as toilets are flushed, sinks drained, etc. and
wastewater enters and exits the septic tank. This creates a minimum amount of flow entering
the disposal system over a long period of time. The perforated pipes used for leachfields
have relatively large holes that allow most of this flow to discharge into the initial one or two
feet of pipe. It has been my experience that if the leachfield is serially connected, the
beginning portion of the field is soaked until the soil refuses additional absorption. This
creates a "dead" zone that is constantly wetted, causing the effluent to progress down the
line until absorption can occur. As this progression continues, the lower leachlines act as
"French drains" due to the migration of the wetting front and loose their ability to effectively
dispose of the effluent.
I've tried to locate a "self -leveling" distribution box and have not been successful. However, I
did find an adjustable device that fits on the end of the pipes in a distribution box. This device
allows adjustment of the flows (see attached Dial -A -Flow literature) if the distribution box
settles.
Using a distribution box allows even flows to enter each leach line avoiding the above
problems of the "dead" zone, by distributing the low flows to several lines. The eventual
progression of saturation proceeds in a parallel manner and doesn't interfere with adjacent
lines.

Pro Construction ISDS

For the above reasons, it is our opinion that utilization of a distribution box will disburse the
septic tank effluent more efficiently and will cause fewer failures than serially connected
leachlines. Also, close supervision of the construction of the septic system and proper
system utilization and maintenance will avoid many of the problems that typically occur.
Attached is a revised plan and cut sheets. If you have any further questions or comments
please call.

Re: ISDS Permit No. 1718-97
Grim -Mandel Residence

Dear Heather;
On September 9, 1997, Jerome Gamba & Associates, Inc. was contacted to perform a system inspection of
the installation of the ISDS at the above noted address. The system is installed as per plans with revision
date of 08/27/97 as per Eagle County design.
At the time of the inspection all of the components of the system where in place. We took several
measurements of the system as -built and are as follows:
distance from Outside edge of foundation to Septic Tank: 14'-11"
distance from Septic Tank to Closest Leach Trench: 18'-5"
distance between Leach Trenches: 10' +-
The 1250 gallon Septic Tank was in -place at the general location as shown on the plans.
The Trenches are constructed in the general area as shown on the plans. The trenches consisted of three
trenches with 12 "Bio-diffuser" units per trench. The total area of the leaching surface, as per Eagle County
specifications is 36 units x 15.5 s.f./unit = 558 s.f.
It is also my understanding that several photographs were to be taken by the owner of the system prior to
backfill.

Jerome Gam'ba & Associates, Inc.
