Berga & Company c/o Eagle County School District P.O Box 740 Eagle, Co. 81631 5--7 -G?-7 Prepared by: Alpine Engineering, Inc. P.O. Box 97 Edwards, CO 81632 (970) 926-3373 INDIVIDUAL SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM APPLICATION INTRODUCTION The existing residential building at 256 Edwards Cemetery Road, Edwards Colorado, is a 3 bedroom single family home. The existing septic system serving this building is not permitted with Eagle County (constructed prior to the permit process). The owner is proposing changing the use of the structure to house the offices of Head Start. In order to bring the system into compliance with county regulations, AEI proposes replacement of the existing absorption area, since the size and technology of that area is unknown. This structure is not located within Eagle River Water & Sanitation District Service area (it is located greater than 400' from an existing line); connection to the sanitary sewer is not feasible. PROPOSED USE The proposed system will serve office space, where eight people will work. There will be no cloths or dishwasher, kitchen or bathing in this office. QUANTITY OF SEWAGE Eight office personal x5gpd/pers.x 1.5 peaking factor = 180 gpd. ✓ SEPTIC TANK SIZE The size of the existing tank is unknown to date. Through verbal communication with the owner the tank is pre -cast concrete. Assuming it was originally sized properly for a 3 bedroom house: 3 bedrooms x 2 people/ brm. x 75 gal/day/pers. x 1.5 peaking factor = 675 gpd. The size and type of tank will be confirmed during the installation of the new system. SOILS INVESTIGATION A percolation test was performed by Alpine Engineering on April 17, 1997, in the proposed absorption area located approximately 100 feet south of the existing house. The average percolation rate for the three holes was 12 minutes per inch (MPI). All three holes exhibited a sufficient percolation rate for a standard septic design. At that time, a soil profile pit was dug to 1 Oft. The presence of top soil was not observed. Soils consisted of silt with small amounts of clay to 4ft. and silty sand with semi round ravel/rock fragments to loft. TRENCH DESIGN A = Q/5 (T)o.s ISDS Application I Head Start A = (180 gpd/5) (12 MPI)o.s A=125SF ✓ Check with loading rate: For the type of soils found on site, the EPA Design Manual: Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems recommends a maximum application rate of 0.8 gallons per square foot per day. 180 gpd 225 ft 0.8 gal/ftz This area will be used for design. with a 50% reduction for infiltrators = 112 SF Number of Infiltrator Units: 112 SF ='7'.5 Infiltrator Units ( round to 8 units ) 15 SF/Infiltrator Per. conversation with the client we will use a total of 12 units to accommodate unanticipated future expansion. Length of Trenches: '_ 12- -infiltrator units x 6.25 ft./infiltrator unit = 2 trenches @ 37.5 ft. long 2 trenches APPLICABLE SETBACKS The proposed location of the new absorption area is outside of all applicable setbacks distances. The existing water supply well on this property is located approximately 200 feet from the proposed absorption area. ISDS Application 2 Head Start ALPINE ENGINEERING, INC. THE SEPTIC SYSTEM IS ALSO TO BE INSPECTED BY ALPINE ENGINEERING, INC. PRIOR TO BACKFILL. CONTACT LINN SCHORR, 926-3373. 2. ALIGN TRENCHES PARALLEL TO CONTOURS TO MAINTAIN COVER. CONSULT CIVIL ENGINEER DURING INSTALLATION IF NECESSARY. 3. PROVIDE MINIMUM 10' SEPARATION BETWEEN WATER AND SEWER LINES, OR ENCASE PER EAGLE COUNTY REGULATIONS. 4. COMPACT SEWER TRENCHES TO 90% STANDARD PROCTOR DENSITY, OR PER SOILS ENGINEER'S RECOMMENDATIONS. 5. PROVIDE RISERS ON SEPTIC TANKS TO FINISHED GRADE. 6. PROVIDE INSPECTION PORTALS PER EAGLE COUNTY REGULATIONS. 7. MAINTAIN MINIMUM GRADE ON SERVICE LINES AND 3 FEET COVER OR PROVIDE INSULATION. COVER OVER INFILTRATORS SHOULD BE NOT LESS THAN 12" AND NOT GREATER THAN 18" PER MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS. 8. PROVIDE 6' MINIMUM BETWEEN INFILTRATOR TRENCH WALLS. 9. CONSTRUCT AND LEVEL TEES AND OVERFLOWS SO THAT FIRST TRENCH FILLS, THEN OVERFLOWS TO SECOND TRENCH, ETC. TO PROVIDE SERIAL DISTRIBUTION. 10. DIRECT DRAINAGE FROM ROOFS AND SURROUNDING AREAS AWAY FROM ABSORPTION TRENCHES. 11. PROVIDE TWO TIES TO SEWER CLEANOUTS, SEPTIC TANK, AND ABSORPTION TRENCH CORNERS, AS REQUIRED BY EAGLE COUNTY FOR AS-BUILTS. 12. WE RECOMMEND THAT THE DISPOSAL FIELD BE SEEDED AFTER INSTALLATION OF THE SUBSURFACE DISPOSAL SYSTEM TO PROMOTE EVAPOTRANSPIRATION. RECOMMENDED SEED MIXES INCLUDE "FOOTHILL PASTURE" OR "PRAIRIE", WHICH ARE AVAILABLE LOCALLY AND GROW TO 10" AND 15" HIGH. NO AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM SHOULD BE INSTALLED ABOVE THE DISPOSAL FIELD. 13. THE OWNER MUST REALIZE THAT AN ONSITE SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM IS CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT FROM PUBLIC SEWER SERVICES. THE OWNER MUST BE AWARE OF AND ASSUME THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTINUED MAINTENANCE OF THE SYSTEM. WE RECOMMEND PUMPING OF THE SEPTIC TANK AT THE END OF THE FIRST YEAR OF USE TO MONITOR SLUDGE ACCUMULATION AND AT A MINIMUM OF EVERY TWO YEARS AFTERWARD. THERE ARE ALSO DAILY CONSIDERATIONS. SUCH AS NOT PUTTING PLASTIC OR OTHER NONBIODEGRADABLE MATERIAL DOWN THE SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM. ALSO, WATER USE MUST BE CAREFULLY MONITORED SO TOILETS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RUN WHEN SEALS MALFUNCTION. TO ILLUSTRATE THE POINT, IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT A RUNNING TOILET WILL CONSUME IN EXCESS OF 1000 GALLONS PER DAY IF ALLOWED TO RUN. EXCESSIVE LOADING (SUCH AS FROM RUNNING TOILETS) WILL FLOOD AND IRREVOCABLY HARM THE SYSTEM, AND STRESS THE ONSITE WELL. 14. ENSURE THAT VEHICLES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE ACROSS THE TANK, LINES . OR INFILTRATORS. PLACE POSTS OR BARRIERS IF NECESSARY. 15. COMPLY WITH ALL EAGLE COUNTY REGULATIONS REGARDING SEPTIC SYSTEM INSTALLATION. INSTALL INFILTRATOR SYSTEM PER MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDATIONS AND EAGLE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS. EAGLE COUNTY WILL NOT APPROVE THE SEPTIC SYSTEM UNTIL AS-BUILTS ARE SUBMITTED.
