BOX 5540 AVON, CO 81620 PREPARED BY: RANGE WEST, INC. P.O. BOX 589 SILVERTHORNE, CO 80498 (970) 468-6281 ``o`auu►uuu►►ee DESIGN CRITERIA Design for replacing existing septic systems to construct a new addition for a future house remodel to 8 bedrooms. Soil percolation rate of 10 mpi and/or a long term acceptance rate of 0.80 gallons per square foot per day. Maximum daily flow as considered for design shall be 150% of the average daily flow of 75 gallons per day per person with an occupancy of 2 people per bedroom. Therefore, (75 x 2) x 8 x 1.5 = 1,800 gallons per day = Q. ABSORPTION FIELD SIZING, Eagle County uses the formula Area = Q x 4t (t = percolation rate) 5 The absorption area so calculated shall be increased by an additional 20 percent for wastes from a garbage grinder discharged into the system and by an additional 40 percent for wastes from an automatic washing machine discharged into the system. Therefore (1800 x 410) x 1.6 = 1,822 square feet required, 5 or per Table 5, a 10 minutes per inch percolation rate = 165 square feet of trenchibedroom x 8 bedrooms = 1,320 square feet required. Formula size is larger and therefore should be used for trench sizing. The field will use infiltrators to provide a more efficient absorption area. Eagle County allows a 50% reduction in field size with their use. This being the case, the required square footage is 1,822 square feet x 0.50 which equals 911 square feet, each infiltrator equals 15.5 square feet of absorption area, therefore 911 square feet divided by 15.5 square feet equals 58.77 infiltrator units required. Four trenches with 16 units each will be used for a total of 64 units which exceeds the required area. 6*121TiV[KI1_•Itel Eagle County regulations require a 2,250 gallon, 2 compartment septic tank for an 8 bedroom house with the first compartment holding a minimum of 1,125 gallons. Therefore, 2 Precast concrete tanks shall be used, the first shall contain 1,500 gallons and the second shall hold 1,250 gallons. R A=N=G=E===W=E=S=T P. 0. SITE INVESTIGATION The site was investigated on October 20, 1987, and three percolation test holes were dug to a minimum depth of 33 inches. Holes were presoaked and percolation tests performed on October 21, 1987. Results of the tests are included in this report; see PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS. A test pit was excavated to a depth of 8.0 feet with a conventional backhoe. The location of the percolation test holes are shown on Drawing No. 1. A summary of the test pits is detailed on Figure No. 1. SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The site is at 0075 Grand Traverse in_ Eagle County, Colo- rado. The house will be located on a ridge running East to West. The leach field will be located on the North side of the ridge line. In the area of the proposed leach field vegetation consists of trees. SUBSURFACE AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS Subsurface conditions in the proposed leach field area are uniform, and consist of topsoil to a depth of three feet Page 2 SUBSURFACE AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS - continued underlain by very weathered bedrock to a depth of seven feet, underlain by bedrock. Nicholas Lampiris, Ph.D., has studied the subdivision to determine the suitability of the.area for individual septic systems. The enclosed letter dated October 30, 1987, states that the permeability of the weathered bedrock is similar to soil. PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS A total of three percolation tests were performed on the site as specified by the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. Results were as follows: Test Hole Min/1" Drop Date of Test Ambient Air Temp. 1 5.0 10/21/87 500 F 2 6.0 10/21/87 500 F 3 6.7 10/21/87 500 F Average time for 1 inch drop = 5.89 minutes. DESIGN CRITERIA A single family residence has been proposed for this site for year-round use. The residence will have a total of five (5) bedrooms and will be equipped with a garbage disposer and automatic clothes washing machine. Thus design criteria for calculations are: Page 3 DESIGN CRITERIA - continued 2 persons/bedroom 75 gallons/person/day - average flow +20% absorption area for garbage disposer +40% absorption area for automatic washer -25% absorption area for dosing tank Maximum flow: 150% of average flow CALCULATIONS A = Q5 where A minimum absorption area (sq. ft.) maximum quantity of sewage flow (gal/day) = percolation rate (min/inch) Q= 5 x 2 x 75 x 1.5 = 1125 gal/day A _ QfT __ 1125 5.89 = 546 sq. ft. —5 +109 sq. ft. From Table 4 (Section 4.07.01 of the Eagle County Regulations), a 1500 gallon septic tank is required. SEPTIC SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the preceding calculations, it is recommended to install a 1500 gallon compartmented septic tank followed by a minimum 900 square foot seepage trench. The seepage Page 4 SEPTIC SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS - continued trench should lie a minimum of 10 feet from all property lines, and 20 feet from the proposed residence. An inspection of the system should be made by a representative of the Eagle County Environmental Health Department prior to backfilling. The installation and material specifications must comply with the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. As an alternate to the standard 900 square foot seepage trench, 300 lineal feet of 10-inch diameter "gravel -less" leach bed tubing (as manufactured by American Drainage Systems, Inc.) could be embedded in the native soils of the site. Due to the remoteness of the site, this alternate would pro- bably be cost effective. A dosing chamber will be a part of the septic system. The dosing chamber will allow for periodic high rate discharge to fill the drainage field instead of a slow trickle into the field. This would prolong the life of the drainage field. Colorado 80215 Phone: 232-01 58 1 SCOPE This report presents the results of percolation tests and provides septic system recommendations for the proposed single family residence at Lot 40, Cordillera Subdivision, Filing No. 2, Eagle County, Colorado. SITE INVESTIGATION The site was investigated on October 20, 1987, and three 1 percolation test holes were dug to a minimum depth of 33 inches. 1. SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The site is at 0075 Grand Traverse in. Eagle County, Colo- rado. The house will be located on a ridge running East to West. The leach field will be located on the North side of the ridge line. In the area of the proposed leach field vegetation consists of trees. SUBSURFACE AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS Subsurface conditions in the proposed leach field area are uniform, and consist of topsoil to a depth of three feet; 2 SUBSURFACE AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS - continued underlain by very weathered bedrock to a depth of seven feet, underlain by bedrock. Nicholas Lampiris, Ph.D., has studied the subdivision to determine the suitability of the area for individual septic systems. DESIGN CRITERIA A single family residence has been proposed for this site for' year-round use. The residence will have a total of five (5) bedrooms and will be equipped with a garbage disposer and automatic clothes washing machine. Thus design criteria for calculations are: DESIGN CRITERIA - continued 2 persons/bedroom 75 gallons/person/day - average flow +20% absorption area for garbage disposer +40% absorption area for automatic washer -25% absorption area for dosing tank +30% absorption area for reducing subsidence Maximum flow: 150% of average flow CALCULATIONS 3 A = Q where A =minimum absorption area (sq.ft.) Q = maximum quantity of sewage flow (gal/day) T = percolation rate (min/inch) Q= 5 x 2 x 75 x 1.5 = 1125 gal/day A = QYT = 1125 5 89 = 546 s ft. 5 5 +109 sq. ft. (disposal +20%) +218 sq. ft. (washer +40%) -137 sq. ft. (dosing -25%) +164 sq. ft. (subsidence +30) 900 sq. ft. absorption trench From Table 5, a minimum area of 165 sq. ft. per bedroom is required. (165 x 5 = 825 sq. ft., less than 900 sq. ft.) Thus the minimum area of absorption trench is 900 sq. ft. If Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc., SB2.10-inch gravelless leach bed tubing is used, one lineal foot of pipe is required for each three square feet of absorption trench; thus 300 lineal feet is required. From Table 4, Section 4.07.01 of the Eagle County Regula- tions, a 1500-gallon septic tank is required. 4 SEPTIC SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the preceding calculations, it is recommended to install a 1500-gallon compartmented septic tank followed by a minimum 900 square foot seepage trench. The seepage trench should lie a minimum of 10 feet from all property lines, and 20 feet from the proposed residence. An inspection of the system should be made by a representative of the Eagle County Environmental Health Department prior to backfilling. The installation and material specifications must comply with the Eagle County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations. As an alternate to the standard 900-square-foot seepage trench, 300 lineal feet of 10-inch diameter "gravelless" leach bed tubing,(as manufactured by Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc.) could be embedded in the native soils of the site. Due to the remoteness of the site, this alternate would probably be cost-effective. A dosing chamber with dual alternating siphons will be a part of the septic system. The dosing chamber will allow for periodic high rate discharge to alternating portions of the drainage field instead of a slow trickle into the field. This would prolong the life of the drainage field.
