Box 988 Edwards, Colorado 81632 0 irpor NO: 91-1406 June 8, 1991 SUBJECT: Site Evaluation and Percolation Testing The Lodge at Cordillera, Edwards, Colorado. Ms. Duley: A site evaluation and percolation testing has been conducted at the location of a proposed temporary absorption bed. The bed will be located in the existing evaporation pond, as shown in, Figure 1, and will be used to accept excess flow from the existing absorption field. "A total of six percolation tests were conducted at'0 to 15'inches below the existing surface of the pond area. Testing was conducted in compliance with Eagle County specifications." Tests yielded an average percolation rate of 8 minutes per inch. Soils within the pond were relatively; wet during the test .period and results should reflect a conservative value. Results of these tests are presented in Figure 2,1 Test Hole.LocationKPlan. One soil profile hole was excavated to a depth of ten feet immediately west of -the pond area. Moisture condition of:soils within the pond and embankment slopes prevented excavating the hole within the pond area. The hole location was chosen to,best" reflect the soil profile which should exist within the pond area. Approximately four feet of silty sand overlays four to six feet of sandy, gravelly clay. A lithologic log of soils exposed in the.hole is presented in Figure 2. - Soil conditions below the pond and soil percolation rate within the pond area are acceptable for construction of a standard absorption bed. Consistency of percolation test results and existing topography around the pond area indicate the bed area can be extended beyond the existing pond. Additional profile holes should be excavated to verify subsurface conditions,if this is necessary. 912 TWELFTH STREET - GOLDEN, COLORADO 80401 - (303) 279.6418 Complete Engineering Services, Inc., Edward D. AVERAGE PERCOLATION RATE = 8 MINUTES PER INCH Rothberg Tamburmi Wmsor Mr. Ray Merry June 14, 1991 Environmental Health Officer TA-1428-SD-C Eagle County SL #2714 725 Chambers Avenue Eagle, CO 81631 Reference: Cordillera Septic Repair Dear Ray: As we have discussed, the existing septic system serving the Cordillera Lodge and Carriage House has failed and immediate action is needed to repair it. The proposed repair work includes the installation of additional septic tanks and leach field area. An estimate of wastewater flow for sizing the additional facilities is attached. Using both accepted -textbook values for each facility type and actual water usage records, the average design flow is estimated at 10,200 gpd. A maximum flow of 15,300 gpd (150% of average) has been used as the basis for design. To achieve the required 30 hour detention time at this maximum flow rate requires 19,125 gallons of storage volume. The existing septic tanks (2 @ 5,000 gallons each and 1 @ 1,000 gallons) and detention pipe (90 feet of 30 inch) provide 14,300 gallons. Two 2,700 gallon septic tanks will be added to bring total capacity to 19,700 gallons. Since immediate action is necessary, we are proposing an "Infiltrator" type leach field per your direction to eliminate the need for a Site Application. The leach field is to be constructed in an existing dry pond and will take full advantage of the existing excavation by covering almost the entire bottom area with "Infiltrator" units. The resulting 25 rows, each 100 feet long, will provide 7,500 square feet of bottom area. Due to the lack of rock masking, the effective infiltration area is 12,500 square feet when calculated according to state guidelines. Professional Engineers and Consultants Offices in Denver and Colorado Springs 1 100 Stout Street/Suite 750/Denver, Colorado 80204-2064/(303) 825-5999/FAX (303) 825-0642 A site evaluation and percolation testing report by Complete Engineering Services is attached. The report found that the average percolation rate of the proposed leach field location is 8 minutes per inch. At this rate, the effective infiltration area is rated at 22,097 gpd. Although this capacity is well above the 15,300 gpd basis for design, an additional safety factor will be provided by retaining the existing leach fields and feeding the new leach field with flow which has passed through those fields without being absorbed. The attached plans show the proposed piping arrangement as well as the leach field and septic tank additions. The materials to complete this work have been ordered and should be on -site by June 17, 1991. Work on the leach field can begin the next day. The septic tanks are being fabricated and are expected to arrive within 10 days and will be installed as soon as they are available. We request that a permit for the septic system repairs described above be issued as soon as possible so that work to correct this problem can begin on the earliest possible schedule.
