Dear Ray
Due to space constrictions an the saits, the Owner has reqUOSted tthe we review the
design of the seepa-ge bed with the hope of reducing its size.
The sys"CeM as designed has a dosing chamber and pump, the use of which permits
a 26* r9dUCt"ion in the size of the seepage bed. Since the Owner it ands to use
wsterA-savina fixtures for which no oredIL-11 was taken in 11_'he design, I ffee'L that

Reduction - 25% of 822 A 52 f t
Revised aroa of seepage bed 617 eft

Per our telephone conversation, I have revised the specification for the
combination septic tank and pump chamber as shown on the drawing dated 21 Mar 90
which was submitted for permit. As you recommended, the revision, as shown on
the attached drawing, specifies a two —compartment septic tank and a separate
dosing tank which will house the pump.
Thank you for your assistance.

The sewage disposal system is designed for a three (3) bedroom single --family
residence in which water saving plumbing fixtures (faucets, shower heads and
water closets) will be installed. An automatic washing machine will be
installed; a garbage grinder will not be installed.

Enclosed is the Waste Disposed System Design and calculations for Lot 1,
Block 6, Lake Creek Meadows. I have stfudied several absorption systems for this
lot. Absorption trenches or beds cannot be used, because of the high groundwater.
The lot is very wooded so evaporation-transporation (E-T) beds would not be
practical, with the lack of direct sunlight the E-T bed would have to be very
large. I have therefore decided that an elevated sand mound will be the best
system. The disadvantage to this system is that because of the flatness of this
lot a gravity dosing system cannot be used, so an electric pump will be required
to charge the absorption field. These pumps will have to operate no more than
three times a day.
If you have any questions, please call.

Dear Mr. Chipman,
I'm writing in regards to your Individual Sewage Disposal
System permit application number 3297. The property, as you
know, required an engineered septic system. This design was
originally done on March 14, 1983 by Intermountain Engineering
and specified a mound system.
An initial review of these plans indicate that there will
be some minor changes. Therefore, it will be necessary to have
the design reevaluated by the engineering firm for final
approval. An inspection by the designer is required after
installation of the system to document proper adheral to the
plans.
Please don't hesitate to call if you have any questions.

INTRODUCTION
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Chipman who reside at 19 West Lake Creek Road, currently have a three (3)
bedroom home with low flush, water saving toilets, a separate garage structure, and an out
building. The garage is proposed to be remodeled to include a one (1) bedroom guest room
and bathroom above the garage. The previous septic system application noted that water
saving fixtures and appliances were installed in the house.
Proposed use, and sewage flow.
A. (1) 3 bedroom house x 2 persons/bedroom x 75 gpd = 450 gpd
(1) 1 bedroom guest house x 3.5 persons/unit x 75 gpd = 262.5 gpd
713 gpd
12% reduction for water saving devices = -85.5 gpd
627.5 gpd
Maximum flow = 628 x 150% = 941 gpd
B. Assume that 1 bedroom is a guest bedroom with no more 2 persons.
4 bedrooms x 2 persons per bedroom x 75 gpd x 150% = 900 gpd
Maximum flow = 900 gpd

MOUND SYSTEM
1. The "as -built" drawings prepared by Shepherd Resources, dated 12/17/90 shows a 36'
x 18' sand filter mound system. The mound area was measured during a site visit on
November 4, 1994, which indicated that the mound is approximately 18' x (34' to 36')
long. The ISDS Permit indicates that the dispersal area requirement was reduced from
822 sf to 630 sf for dosing. It is assumed that the mound was actually constructed to
be 36 x 18 = 648 sf, which corresponds to the design calculations submitted by
Shepherd Resources.
Area of Seepage Bed
Application rate of 1.15 gallon/sf/day (Section 4.08.07 (3))
Area of bed = 900/1.15 = 782 sf
17.5% Reduction for dosing (4.04.01 (70) (maximum 25% allowed)
782 - 17.5% (782) = 645 sf required
648 sf provided
Review of the Shepherd Resource design calculations for the ISDS Permit submitted indicates
that the sewage flow was calculated as follows:
Sewage Flow
3 bedrooms x 150 gallons/day/bedroom = 450 gallons/day
+40% for automatic dishwasher = 180 gallons/day
630 gallons/day
Design flow rate = 150% (630) = 945 gpd
Proposed design flow rate with
3 bedroom house and guest room(4 BR x 2 pers/ BR) = 900 gpd
Per "Wastewater Engineering Design for Unsewered Areas" by Rein Haak, wastewater flow
for the average residential home is 50 to 75 gallons/cap/day, for average house which has 1.5
baths, 3 bedrooms, an automatic dishwasher, washing machine, and conventional plumbing -
fixtures.
1. The flow quantity for the auto dishwasher is already included in the average flow rate
of 75 gallons/cap/day.
2. The proposed guest house and existing building are equipped with water saving
devices.
SUMMARY
The septic system was originally designed and constructed for more flow than is proposed by
the addition of the guest room (945 gpd vs. 900 gpd).
The original system was oversized as a result of adding design flow for the automatic
dishwasher, and not considering that water fixtures are equipped with water saving devices.
Adequate (36 hours) of retention time is provided by the 1000 gallon septic tank and 350
gallon dosing chamber. It is recommended that a schedule be determined for pumping the
septic tank to make sure that excessive solids build up does not reduce retention times. This
could be achieved by determining when the tank was last pumped, (three years ago, per Ed
Chipman), pump the tank out now, and have the pumper identify the relative volume of solids
in the tank.
It is also recommended that the guest bedroom and/or garage area not be used to house more
than two persons, such as a family with children, etc. If the flow quantity of the house and
guest bedroom is considered as a 4 bedroom house with 2 persons per bedroom, the flow to
the septic system is less than it was originally designed and constructed for.
