SUNDESIGNS ARCHITECTS
As requested, we performed a percolation test in an existing back -
hoe pit at the subject site. Chen & Associates, Inc., previously con-
ducted a subsurface study for design of foundations at the site and re-
ported our findings to you on June 12, 1987.
The percolation test was performed adjacent to Pit 2 near the east
end of the proposed building. 'Ihe percolation hole was dug on June 19
and the test performed on June 20 after soaking. The test results are
shown on the attached table.
Based on the test results, and the soil profile encountered at Pit 2,
the area appears suitable for a conventional infiltration septic system.
After the infiltration disposal area has been determined, a percolation
test should be conducted for final sizing.

SB2 S11St2Eit sm Ii2W standards for o
The SB2 concept is the newest and most
innovative in leach bed design. It was de-
veloped by professional sanitarians, John
Shroff and John Barnes. The system is now
being marketed to contractors and suppliers
exclusively by Advanced Drainage Systems,
Inc. Years of research has proven the S132
system to be an effective alternative to con-
ventional gravel leach beds when installed
in areas suitable for conventional on -site soil
absorption systems.
In 1980, a research project was con-
ducted to evaluate the performance of 100
S132 systems which had been installed in
Montgomery County, Texas.
The results of this study indicate that S132
systems function as well as, or better than,
the conventional leach bed systems which
were installed in similar soils.
The report prepared by Dr. B. L. Carlile of
Texas A & M University and D. J. Osborne
of North Carolina State University stated:
"On the basis of this study, the design
criteria for SB2 systems should be based on
the same soil and site parameters as a con-
ventional (gravel) system. On sites where
conventional systems should function satis-
John Barnes, John Shroft
developers of the SB2 system
factorily, so should SB2 systems."
The report states that the primary advan-
tages of the SB2 system are to:
A. Promote improved distribution of waste-
water in the trench.
B. Increase retention of solids in the pipe.
C. Increase capillary movement of waste-
water around the soil interface.
D. Eliminate the need for gravel and reduce
heavy equipment traffic.
E. Reduce labor and installation costs.
S1132 is available in both 8 and 10 inch
diameter corrugated polyethylene tubing
with specially designed perforations, en-
cased in factory installed Drain Guard" pro-
tective wrap.
The S1132 gravel -less system provides as
much storage capacity and surface area for
effluent absorption as a gravel leachbed
system. The SB2 tubing is designed to pro-
vide increased retention of suspended
solids.
The result is a highly efficient, gravel -
less, leach bed system that is much easier
to install than conventional gravel absorption
systems.
Locating holes 60 off bottom center line creates
additional sludge storage space.

`
Faster and easier to install
The SB2 tubing can be installed with less
labor and equipment on all types of site con-
ditions where conventional gravel systems
are permitted, using the same basic equip-
ment and techniques. (See "SB2 Gravel -
less Leachfield Installation
Recommendations.")

DRAIN GUMP.D Protective Wrap
The DRAIN GUARD protective wrap pro-
vides an excellent soil interface for the pas-
sage of effluent into the soil. The valleys of
the corrugations function as additional stor-
age capacity since the DRAIN GUARD fab-
ric bridges the corrugations and allows for
the free movement of the effluent out and
,i,ound the pipe.
1 Itr mlijor advantages of the SB2 system
are the size of the tubing and the location of
drain holes. The outside diameters of
use 3 .and 10" SB2 tprovide an
equivalent of 21, aril 3 s care feet, respec-
tively, of soil absorp,t Q area per lineal foot.
The location of the drain holes. 60' off the
bottom center line, provides additional
sludge storage capacity, which increases
retention time.
Drain Guard limits soil particle in-
filtration and allows effluent to
pass through to soil.
DRAIN GUARD protective wrap is
overlapped and sonically-welded
to provide 360' coverage of line.
Monitoring and Cleaning
The ability to monitor and clean out the
distribution line is an important feature of
the S1132 system that is not possible with a
gravel leach bed system. With an inspection
port added at the end of the distribution line
the sludge level can be easily monitored
and the distribution lines could be back -
flushed during regular septic tank main-
tenance. Although back -flushing will not
be necessary in most installations, it is
important that the homeowner be able
to check the sludge level.
Drain Holes
Sludge
Inspection Port
The large diameter tubing pro-
vides greater storage capacity per
linear foot and permits slow move.
ment of effluent, therefore increas.
ing retention time.

SB2 Installation Guidelines
i NTRnni irT i nN
The SB2 system is an advanced alternative to gravel filled soil absorption trenches for septic
tanks. SB2 corrugated polyethylene tubing is encased in a factory installed DrainCuard® protective
wrap. It is available in both 8-inch and 10-inch inside diameters, and in 20-foot lengths.
SITE FACTORS & SYSTEM LAYOUT
1. SB2 may be used on any site suitable for conventional gravel drainfield lines.
2. High water tables and/or slowly permeable soils severely effect the performance of
all soil absorption systems.
3. S132 systems can utilize any method of effluent distribution used in conventional systems,
i.e. distribution boxes, hillside boxes, serial distribution, manifolds, etc. For systems
utilizing serial distribution, the S132 should be installed with each line following the
contour of the land. Individual lines are to be joined with a connecting lateral that
provides a one -inch maximum head on the upper line (Figure 1). This insures that the upper
line is full to capacity before any effluent can overflow into the next line.
4. All plumbing connections between the house and the S62 drainfield, including the septic tank,
should be identical to those specified in the local regulations for conventional gravel
systems.
5. All setbacks and distances from soil absorption lines to property lines, wei;c, lake shores,
seasonal groundwater, bedrock, etc., should be specified as is required in the local rules
and regulations for conventional gravel systems.
6. SB2 can be used in conjunction with any locally approved septic tank or aerobic unit.
TRENCH EXCAVATION
1. Recommended trench width for the S82 gravel -less drainfield is 18-24 inches. Tight soils may
require a 24-inch wide trench to insure proper backfill around the bottom and sides of the
5132 (Figure 2).
2. Trench depth is normally 18-24 inches to allow for 6-12 inches of native soil backfill.
No gravel is required. The trench must be deep enough to insure that the flow line of
the septic tank is at least one inch above the top of the SB2 (Figure 3).
3. Trench lengths should not exceed the maximum allowable lengths for conventional gravel
systems. The trench bottom should be level with a maximum slope of 1" per 100 lineal feet.
PIPE INSTALLATION
1. The factory installed black shipping bag must be removed prior to placement in the trench.
2. The 20-foot lengths of SB2 must be placed in the trench with the green stripe up and joined
with ADS split couplings. The DrainCuard@ should then be pulled over the joint to reduce
soil infiltration.
3. Either plain end caps or optional inspection/cleaning ports (Figure 4) can be used at the end
of each line.
4. S132 lines should be held in place during initial backfilling to prevent movement of the pipe
in the trench.
5. A loose granular soil backfill will enhance the performance of the 582 in slowly permeable
soils.
6. Large clumps and rocks should not be used as backfill.
7. All drainfield installations should be seeded as soon as possible to prevent soil erosion due
to rainfall.
